I have a small problem! After long and fruitful career as a PC gamer I've decided to buy a PS5! I have to say I absolutely love the experience to the point that my PC is now stored under a bed.
Ive never had a console in my life so I would like to ask if this is normal - Every 20th or so start of the console I get the typical blue light and nothing happens, console doesn't start at all. Restarting or anything else doesn't help, at this state I can't even get to the safe start menu. The only thing that helps is power cycling the console.
This thing happens EVERY time there is a software update or, as I said, every 20 or so normal starts.
Ive tried factory reset, rebuilding database and full software install from a USB, nothing helped.
I don't know if this is quirk of a console or a major problem and therefor I should return it. My fear is that its very hard to replicate so I don't want to be without a console for a month just for the shop to reset software and send it back to me.
@species I can’t say that I’ve ever experienced this phenomenon with any of my consoles. If I understand your issue, you’ll press the start button and just see the blue light turn on but there’s no other indications that the PS5 is running? No video or audio coming to the TV? Is the console making sounds like it’s booting up? Or is it silent and all you have is the light? Does the controller show that it’s connected via Bluetooth when this happens or is it blinking like it’s still trying to connect the whole time?
The reason I ask is that the only similar thing I’ve experienced, and I this was on the PS4 and I can’t remember it happening yet on PS5, is that there was occasions when I could tell the console was working (light was on, controller was connected, it was making the disc and whirring sounds of a booting console) but there was no image or sound coming through and it had to do with the TV not detecting the signal through the HDMI, for whatever reason. I learned that I had to make sure that the TV was set to the right input channel before turning the PS4 on, because if I did it the other way around or turned them both on at the same time the signal was somehow “confused” and not detected, if that makes sense. It never happened again after I figured that out.
(Edit: I just remembered another similar situation I had on PS3, although likely your problem, but my PS3 wouldn’t boot one time after I had been cleaning it with one of those dusting cloths that attract dirt (like Swiffer wipes) and I had to power cycle it. I attributed it to static electricity likely did a number on the console, so I stopped using those wipes around the console and it didn’t happen again)
Your issue is possibly completely different. If you haven’t tried it yet though, maybe try pulling out the HDMI cable and reinserting it the next time that happens. Or try using a different HDMI input in your TV and see it it happens then.
Otherwise, it’s probably a console hardware issue and you should get it serviced before the warranty runs out (if it hasn’t already).
Sucks that you are having issues as a new console owner. Having a console is supposed to be simpler and more reliable than PC! But I’m happy you’re enjoying it otherwise. I will say that after having owned all systems from PS1-PS5 (including PSP and Vita) that Sony makes mostly reliable stuff. The only problems I’ve encountered over the years is after many years of wear and tear I’ve had to replace a couple of my units.
@species I have had a similar issue a few times with my PS5, turns out the PS5 is fine and it was actually my Samsung TV, easy fix was to change the source to Live TV and then back to the HDMI input, although it hasn't done it in some time, probably solved by a TV software update.
If you don't like it, don't play it, and shut yo damn mouth
As of today I brought my console for warranty repair. I had a lenghty call with SONY and it's very likely a hardware issue.
Ive tried pretty much everything I could at home. Full software resets, full new software install, other TV, new HDMI, new power cable. Even brought it to my friends house to rule out electricity problem. When the console got to this state it was completely soft bricked, couldn't even get to safe mode. Only powercycling helped.
I would be fine with a few glitches form time to time, but as you mentioned, having a console should be easier than PC!
I haven't lost my faith in console gaming, there's just some charm of just sitting on a sofa in front of a huge TV and playing
Hopefully I get my console back before the Baldurs Gate 3 release!
I have gotten full new replacement from sony, not even tried to repair it. Full new unit with new IMEI.
My new playstation runs like a charm, zero problems.
