What happens when you already own a game on PS4, and you buy a new edition? I was wondering if the previous edition is upgraded or if both versions show up in the library.

The two scenarios I have in mind are Control Ultimate Edition and Spider-Man Remastered.

Spider-Man is being treated as a whole seperate game, which is pretty stupid imo considering at the end of the day it's literally the same exact game enhancements be damned

After Ghost of Tsushima proved that PS5 enhancements like 60fps can be added in a matter of just slapping a compatbility patch and updating the game, it just makes these "remasters" of one or two year old PS4 games seem super pointless.

Basically Spider-Man won't show up as a PS4 game if you get the Remastered version, because that version is exclusive to PS5 despite the fact the PS4 game can already be played on PS5 to begin with

In very basic terms, games like Control and Spider-Man have PS5 apps. Games like GoT are PS4 apps, with patches in place to take advantage of PS5 hardware. So if the game is sold separately on PS Store, it’ll be separate apps. If it’s the same purchase page, it’ll be the one app.
