Basically I just had an unfortunate power outage caused by a sudden storm.
To my surprise the dumb PS5 asked me to do a FULL reset. I thought ok, this is bad but I just need to redownload everything and use the cloud saves!
I reinstall Psychonauts 2 (the game I was playing when the outage occured) and when I go to check the save on cloud it's from August 25th. I was probably 8 to 10 hours in and the save file is from the beginning of the game wtf. If I had just lost the 2 hours of progress that I made today, that would be fine...but now at the start of the game again? I am so pissed off about this...
Why doesn't it upload the save everytime you use the game? What a dumb system.
damn thats tough , i wish they'd bring memory cards back - but they won't because they wan't to ''own'' all of our data & games , and have semi-control over us . do you know how useless ps accounts would be if we still had memory cards ? if your account got hacked or banned - just make another one and plug in the memory card. there should be more ways to back up game saves than just cloud or the console , but they wont do it.
@AFCC Honestly, I’ve been checking lately since I got nervous about cloud saves when Returnal crashed my PS5 once. And it appears to me that the cloud save is literally uploaded and synced at the end of every play session, as soon as you close the game. In fact while playing A Plague Tale recently, I was hoping it didn’t upload because I realized I missed a collectible toward the end of the game and wanted to just replay the last hour instead of the entire chapter but the cloud save was already current with my console save immediately after exiting the game.
I’m not sure if maybe it’s game-dependent.
Either way, that sucks for you, bud. Hang in there.
I believe it only auto updates when the console is in rest mode or you close the game. But you need to have the following options enabled.
Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Stay Connected to the Internet.
Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then select Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4).
For PS5 games, select Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data.
For PS4 games, select Auto-Upload.
For PS5 games, both your console and cloud storage will sync to the most recent data. For PS4™ games, data is automatically uploaded to your cloud storage, but will need to be manually downloaded to PS5 console storage.
@JohnnyShoulder that is super weird. Like I said in the post I only made 2 hours or so of progress yesterday! The other days I always closed the game, it should've synched then...
Mine seems to have always updated the cloud saves but has this other annoying feature where when I open a game it checks to see if it's synced with the cloud and always tells me there's a clash. Then presents me with the chance to resolve the issue by choosing which save it should use but both the local one and the cloud one always have exactly the same timestamp. Does anyone else's do that?
@AFCC Cloud saves aren't versioned so you can only have the latest on there. It's a shame as having that ability would mean that at least if your save got corrupted and uploaded then you could at least step back to a previous one. It would probably mean that people would use it for save scumming though so I can understand if that's a reason they don't do it.
@JohnnyShoulder It's really strange but then it's never caused a problem as far as I can tell. It seems to happen sporadically for me and I've no idea what causes it.
@Shigurui For some reason (let's be honest, it's probably to "encourage" subscribing to PS Plus) you can't move PS5 saves to external storage. The only way to back them up is PS Plus.
That said, I don't remember having an issue with saves not syncing on their own.
I do get the occasional "conflict" where the console asks me which save I want to use but they're actually the same, but not very often.
@nomither6 It in the same place where you manually upload and download saves. You might need a usb stick in the console for the option to become available, but it has been a few years since I've used a stick for this purpose.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
I confirm! Last AC Valhalla save I have here is from April when I did 30 or more hours of the game in the past month or so...
Ghost of Tsushima gone...
Every single player game from April forward seems to be gone. What A DUMBF**** SYSTEM. This crap doesn't auto-update.
I gotta praise Xbox, they do it WAY WAY BETTER.
I can't understand why the Psychonauts 2 game had a save from 25th and never updated it. And I can't understand why PS5 game saves from April forwards also didn't synch...I recently finished Valhalla and was going to play the DLC but...since April I must have 30+ hours of difference...this is heartbreaking.

@JechtUltima Gladly I am now closer to where I was yesterday by SUPER RUSHING Psychonauts 2!
But yeah I probably will never play the Valhalla DLC now... And also Ghost of Tsushima will be a bummer since I already picked up tons of things on Iki!
Funny thing, you can manually back up PS4 saves on PS5 but no PS5 saves lol
