Topic: Using TV to compensate for 30fps

So I was wondering, with how we have to constantly choose between fidelity@30fps or performance@60fps - can we use our TV to compensate at the cost of minor input lag? I recall that the TVs have jutter reduction and other features that literally insert frames between two frames of a movie that smooths out the motion. For an open world a minor hit to input lag may be acceptable if it let you experience fidelity mode at a perceived higher framerate?

The issue with motion interpolation is that it will create :

  • soap opera effect : especially noticeable when watching movies, people sensitive to it can notice it when playing games too
  • artifacts : especially around fast moving edges (or worse, around written parts like subtitles), you'll get messes of pixels that can be very distracting

This, and the added input lag, makes these options more often than not unavailable in most tvs' Game Mode.

Another solution is black frame insertion (every tv has a different name, of course, for LG OLED tvs, it's OLED Motion Pro). While the effect will look better, with less of the issues above, it will lower the brightness of the game (and even crush blacks). The more you increase the setting, the darker the screen gets.

All in all, there's no perfect solution, I'd advise trying the different solution and see if one's agree with your enjoyment of the games.

@Mega-Gazz The more 'image' processing you ask from the TV, the more lag you introduce - this is why 'game-modes' can exist because they basically turn off as much of the TV's image processing as possible to reduce the time it takes from receiving the image to displaying it.

As @Olmaz correctly states, there are a number of issues that obviously creates on top of the 'increase' in lag that additional processing time adds. It doesn't matter if the TV holds a frame of a TV/Movie image for over a second as it 'processes' it, as long as the sound is still in sync. You don't 'know' how long its taken your TV to process and display that image, how much 'lag' there is - its only when you need instant response/reaction to things you see on screen, like gaming, that you notice the 'lag'

Its very dependent on what TV manufacturers allow you to turn 'on/off' and how much lag (if any) each additional 'process' you bring in. Interpolating 'new' fake frames to insert between the last and 'next' frame to basically 'fake' a higher/smoother frame rate not only requires quite a bit of 'processing', its also going to need the next frame before displaying the 'last' frame so it can't start 'interpolating' to create those 'fake' frames in between - therefore adds a lot of Lag

Some manufacturers may allow you to use Black Frame Insertion (BFI) relatively 'cheaply', some at no extra cost (in terms of lag) but really this helps that 24fps judder because each 'frame' is not persisting on screen so long. At 60hz, a 30fps frame would have to persist for the full 33.3ms or 2 frames. With BFI, they don't 'persist' on screen that long - only 16.6ms, followed by16.6ms of 'black' so the next frame flashes up instead of 'transition'. Some people are also more sensitive to the 'flashing' too from going rapidly between bright image and black frame.

PC monitors don't have a lot of processing built in, usually at most it has some colour correction, but mostly what you get is the 'raw' image from your PC. What you also have to remember is that every part of a 'game' has been crafted, every line, every colour etc. Therefore, in theory, it shouldn't really require too much image processing. That 'should' apply to Consoles and most games have their own settings too. The developers have already built in 'image' processing into their engine and the consoles often have their own settings to tweak the image being sent to a display - so the 'need' to use the TV to process a processed image is unnecessary - some may still 'prefer' a more 'processed' image but there is a 'cost' to it...

At the end of the day, its your choice and you that is playing so its up to you to 'choose' what's the 'best' option for you. Its a choice between image/frame persistence or breaking up that persistence with a 'Black' frame or add even more lag by getting your TV to produce 'fake' interpolated frames to 'simulate' higher frame rates...

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
