For some years now, we've been asked by users if they can pay a subscription to disable adverts on Push Square without having to use their adblocker.
We've finally put together our subscription offering, which essentially allows you to disable adverts (although you can leave them on if you like) and show your support with a little badge next to your username.
We're announcing it here in the forum first, as I wanted to get some initial feedback before we promote it further. We've priced our subscription at $3.99/month (or $39.99 annually, saving 17%), and one subscription applies to ALL our websites too. We wanted the monthly price to be around that of a coffee, as we felt that is a fair price for what we offer.
I think this is an interesting idea, but I do think for the price more functionality should be offered. On other forums in the past that have done similar things, they have let users who pay into the site have like higher quality avatars, or be able to use gifs as avatars, get access to like unique user titles, exclusive areas on the forum and other stuff like that. It looks like you slowly intend to expand the service based on the FAQ, so given the time I invest already between Nintendo Life and here I will probably sub in eventually, but I think I will wait until it is more content complete, personally.
The adverts really don’t bother me, and really the last thing I need is any more outgoings right now!! But.. I’m here all the time and enjoy the content and interaction, so happy to subscribe and support.
@HarmanSmith thanks, as it's a totally new area for us we're definitely open to feedback and will continue to develop it over time.
@stvevan it's not really meant to be compared to PS+; it all depends on how much visiting our sites is worth to each individual — for less than the price of a magazine back in the day and significantly more content we think it's a fair price point and inline with other media offerings. As for adblockers, that's something we'll address further down the line as realistically all users should be expected to pay (either by viewing ads OR a paid subscription); adblocking isn't a viable long-term option for us.
@Pizzamorg thanks, that's all useful suggestions, and we will add more things in time. However, we want to make sure we don't segregate those who subscribe and those that choose to 'pay' by viewing ads; both are valid forms of payment and we don't want a two-tiered system like other sites, so we'll be careful what things we add into the subs model.
I’ve never really had a problem with the ads & I don’t like having too many subscriptions on the go.
I think I will wait for the it to be more feature complete. As it stands it doesn’t sound like something that I’d get much out of.
Just an ex. I’m a big fan of brackets & it’s March Madness season. It would be pretty neat if supporters could vote for a bracket topic & then that plays out on the main site over a number of weeks/months (available for all)- similar to the Ultimate PlayStation Character tournament from a few years ago.

With ads this site is much better than most. The ads don't cover content even when I zoom as many sites do. How I wish other sites I visit would have pages presented like pushsquare is. Some sites are not even viewable without ad blocking or disabling javascript.
Sub fees are common now with either all or some content available only with a sub. That is what I figured this site would eventually do.
@NoCode23 thanks — it's actually nice to hear people recognise that we are 'fairer' than most when it comes to ad unit placement. We could obviously litter the page with them even more, but we don't want to make a bad experience like other sites.
@MatthewJP not a problem at all, as long as you're seeing the ads that's no issue at all
@antdickens this doesn’t make any difference, and may be by design, but I did notice you don't see supporter badges on people if you are not logged in.
@kyleforrester87 whilst we're just inviting people via the forum, only other supporters will see the badges. Once we roll out wider they will be public, but good spot!
