I ordered it from ebay and just received it in the mail! I'm currently giving it a test run to make sure everything is in working order. It cost me 250.00. Not sure if that's a good deal but i was desperate. So far everything seems good. It gets a little hot but for a Phat PS3 that's probably normal.

It still has the warranty sticker so i Don't think it's ever been opened. Do you think i should restore it to factory default or is that not really necessary? I don't wanna brick it somehow. Anyway I'm happy with my purchase so far. It's relatively clean and not too shabby looking. The fan is a little loud but it's a fat PS3 so no surprise there.

Yeah so yay me i finally got a backwards compatible big mamma jamma PS3 to go with my new PS5!

@Truegamer79 Congratulations! I'd recommend sliding of the top panel and cleaning out the vents (tutorials on YouTube) and then checking the card readers and PS1,PS2 and Blu-Ray playback to see how long the fan takes to step up to its fastest (and loudest) level. The seller should have factory restored it before mailing it out so I wouldn't worry about that. Did you get an official Dualshock 3 along with it? Those things are like gold dust.

Yeah I'll probably at least try to get the dust out of the top. The fan does seem to ramp up pretty quickly. I had it running for a good half hour before it really got loud. Is that good? I checked a PS2 game and it loaded up just fine. It wasn't factory reset. I'll probably play the batman Arkham games or something first. I've been thinking of doing that for a while since Kevin Conroy just passed and i kinda wanted to remember the good times. Besides those games Rule!

@Truegamer79 I have one backwards compatible PS3 as well! I killed my first one because I tried to change the thermal paste behind the thermal plates. This is the hardest thing to do on a PS3

Now I keep my BC Fat PS3 like a display piece because I got a Modded Slim PS3 for playing PS2 games

As much as I love it the 360 is just better It allows for games to install on the HDD so no constant spinning, therefore no wear and tear on discs and disc drive. This is the only thing that edges the 360 to the PS3. Also, its architecture is dev UNfriendly and that is why many games run better on the 360!

As for your choice of games to play on it ... it is perfect! The Arkham series are one of my favorite things in gaming!

Well done on finding a working one!

I had two fat 60GB units, the first one died while I was playing Dragon's Dogma and the second one died while I was playing Dragon's Dogma. I think there may be a pattern...?

CEX are charging £170 (discounted) to £250 (boxed) so I think you got a reasonable deal.

I've been playing it for a few days now and so far it's running great! It does have a slight problem taking in discs though. They'll go in but sometimes it needs a little push. I'm wondering if anything can be done to fix this? Maybe if i clean the slot with a cue tip or put some kinda lube on it. Not sure.

The surface on top is pretty nasty looking. Maybe it could use a buffing out or whatever. Other than that it runs and plays PS2 games just fine. It's an EO1 model so apparently it's partial emulation. Compatability is supposedly 90% or something like that.

Are there any hugely popular PS2 games you guys know of that won't work? Please Don't say MGS 3. I'd be so bummed.

@Truegamer79 The only "big" games that I've had problems with are "Onimusha 3" and "Silent Hill 2". I think I remember there being a full list of incompatible (or partially incompatible) games on Wikipedia. I'm not sure about the drive problem - it's not one I've run in to I'm afraid.

LN78

Truegamer79

@LN78
Yeah the drive thing isn't a huge deal. It is pulling in the discs but they go almost in and get stuck. I have to push them in the rest of the way. As long as it's reading discs and ejecting them properly. It's never been opened so I'm not really wanting to take it apart. I'd probably end up killing it.

Truegamer79

LN78

@Truegamer79 Honestly that sounds like something you want to have checked and fixed because eventually (sooner rather than later on this evidence) the intake/eject mechanism is going to.give out and you'll end up with a disc stuck in your console.

Not sure about hugely popular but The Bard's Tale (the top down, Norrath type one) has horrendous graphical glitches making it unplayable. Everything else I tried with mine seemed to work OK.

For any scruffy or iffy parts, you might be able to find a dead PS3 fat one for parts? I suspect there may be some on eBay or the like?

Oh one more question. That flap cover thing for the card reader is missing from my PS3. I'm not sure what it's called but where can i get a replacement? Not that it really matters but I'd kinda like to make my PS3 look as good as possible without taking it apart.

Truegamer79

LN78

@Truegamer79 From the look of things, you might be best buying a knackered (but cosmetically nice) console and harvesting it for parts.

Hey everyone i just wanted to ask is PSN on PS3 still working? I was thinking i should probably upgrade the hard drive and re-download all the games from my library in my account before this thing gets shut down for good assuming it hasn't been already.

I remember a couple years ago they said it was shutting down but then they back pedaled due to fan outcry. People were losing their mud over the shut down so they postponed it.

So am i too late or is PSN on PS3 still up?

Truegamer79

LN78

@Truegamer79 Yep, PSN still works - you might have to jump through an extra ID hoop to sign in, though.

LN78

Truegamer79

@LN78
Yeah i read something about how they now have this two step verification BS and you gotta log in from a computer or mobile device by generating a password to sign in instead of using your regular PSN password.

Whatever makes it more inconvenient so people will migrate to the newer system. 🙁

Truegamer79

LN78

@Truegamer79 In fairness I'm surprised it still works at all. It's a console from a full 2 generations back at this point and over 15 years old.

@LN78

Yeah i keep thinking damn has it been that long?! 🤯 The other day i heard someone use the word "retro" when referring to PS3 and i was like good God I'm getting old! The PS3 is retro now? Yikes!

LN78

@Truegamer79 Yeah. I think people have different definitions but for me it's anything more than two generations old so the PS360 era definitely counts!

Well done and amazing news , to check the old girls fully functional I’d recommend a stress test - last of us. , uncharted 3 or GT 6 .

I have noticed with ps3s even faulty ones that they play the majority of games fine but the 3 listed above tend to brick the machine - don’t worry a restart will fix it but it shows you the state of the machine and if any work is required.

If you get through that Scot free I’d say a thorough clean and if your going to use it as a daily driver an ssd really helps eliminate texture pop etc and generally sharpens things up a little.

If you do need work I found a great ps3 guru who has been very helpful to me with de lids and cap replacements .

Let me end with this the ps3 is a gorgeous machine inside and out and I can’t speak highly enough of these machines

Congratulations
