I made this few months back at IGN blog and decided to post it here with few updated examples:
After being a member of Playstation Plus since the launch of Instant Game Collection I kinda now understand Sony's objective with this "free" game benefits. To make it simple to understand I divided the PS+ games in 4 categories: dead online, hype creator, dead game and system seller.
Dead Online
Its simple to describe this category is the online based game that owners of the game stopped playing making the game for new consumers "worthless" to make some profit for the game they give it for free and convince some players to pay extra for the DLC of the game keeping the still bit profitable and at the same time keeping it alive.
Examples: Gotham City Impostors, Guardians of Middle Earth and Demon Souls
Hype Creator
This games are normaly released just few months before the release of its sequel to introduce new fans to the series and create hype and interest for the sequel in some cases this games are just released to just create interest in the IP. The release of Hype Creator's in PS+ makes the game more popular and at the same time gamers that enjoy them may consider buying the lastest announced or released sequel and in some cases they will try to get some money with DLC too.
Examples: Resident Evil 5, Borderlands, Bioshock 2 and Saints Row III
Standard Games
In Playstation Plus this are games that simply stopped selling well after some time in other words games that already stopped creating profit. After some games reaches their peak sales, sales start to slow down until it reached the point the game starts selling only few copies per month are released in the PS+. In this category normaly includes kinda old games games with few exceptions. I think these games are just there to simply satisfy gamers and make the PS+ service more attractive to standard PSN users now that Sony can't make any more profit out of them.
Examples: Rachet and Clank All 4 One, Starhawk and Darksiders.
System Seller
This category is kinda new the objective of this one is just boost sales of PS3 and Vita. PS3 or Vita owners that already are paying for PS+ may start to consider to get the a PS3 or Vita just for being able to get some awesome games that are available in other console from the service you are already paying. For this startegy to work Sony added high rated exclusive games from the system to add a purchase value to the system for PS+ users. In this category even new consumers that never got any of the systems before are considering to get any of both systems just to some free games with the current PS+ bundles.
Infamous 2, Littlebigplanet 2, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush.
Conclusion
Well so this is it, this is my guess of Sony's benefit this all kinda came out to me when some of my friends and I started to talk about this. You guys can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong and sorry in advance for some grammar mistakes around this whole blog post. Please don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about the service after me and a friend bought our PS3 one year ago and this service has helped us to catch up with some of the PS3 awesome games that are around there and always kinda give us something new to play each week. Thanks for reading and feel free to participate in the comments if you guys see I'm missing something or just want to state your opinion you can always comment on this blog post.
PS: If you guys can add any new info or something I missed please comment it and I will try to add it to this post and add the user as a source again THANKS FOR READING.=3
Those are true, but i'm still enjoying tons of games that PS+ provides me. The best example for me is Borderlands, wich i had never played before. It's true that most of those games are games that makes no more profit, but i'm sure that other gamers like me enjoy getting a game that they never played and for a amount that is less than an annual subscription for Xbox live. Me i love having lots of games available to play when i want to, and for me the subcriptions is perfect and is far more awesome than xboxlive wich you don't have any free games or discounts !
@Joburn90 I've really enjoyed it too it helps me catch up with all the games I missed this gen after I only have one year with my PS3.
@Jaz007 Thanks but I'm still missing something. Few indie games like Zomie Tycoon 2 that has been added on the IGC the day they were released. I still don't see how both Sony and devs are getting money with this :S
I know if you create a new account on your PS3 you can get games from different regions PS Stores but can you sign up for their PS+ too? Wanna know if I here in the UK can sign up for the Japanese PS+ as there's games on there which will likely never be released here (Time Travellers on Vita being the main one). I doubt it's legal though haha.
