Hey there everyone! I'm finally getting around to upgrading my hard drive for my super slim 12gb, after my last ps3 yellow light of death'd on me. Could anyone recommend me a particular hard drive? I understand that i'll need to buy a mounting bracket also. Thanks in advance!

Almost any laptop-sized hard drive will do fine, I used my old 320gb seagate hard drive to upgrade my ps3's 160gb drive.

And if you're not moving any content over, the process is pretty simple. You'll need a flashdrive with the latest PS3 update store onto it though from sony's site, but other than that it's not too difficult. I used an external drive to backup all my content (which took wayyy too long, delete any game data you don't need to copy over!) and then restored it onto the new drive.

like the guy above said any laptop size will do but i do recommend ones made by western digital blue just type in PS3 hard drive on Amazon and you will be fine

oh and you can also get brackets there

You need to make sure the height is 7mm, not 9.5mm or else it won't fit.
Other than that, any 2.5in SATA hard drive will do.

Also, I believe you actually need to buy the hard drive bracket if you have the 12gb model, since it doesn't come with it. (It's included with all other models.)

5400rpm vs 7200rpm: PS3 will not read it fast enough for 7200rpm to make a difference. It will only cost more money for no reason.

The difference is very noticeable in large game installs, GT5, and bigger updates but other then that your not losing much of your life. I run a 7200rpm hdd for the PS3 and did tests with it. But outside those 3 things....it really is pointless unless you have an actual computer.

I personally prefer Seagate HDDs and they are super easy to replace on the PS3.

If its the first slim then no bracket needed I went for a 7200 rpm drive for no apparent reason than it revs higher! more = better (Top gear logic)

This is the one:

So no bracket is good, as they cost around £9.
I have heard that a 7200RPM drive can cause overheating problems... and... the perfomance gain is not worth it... - would you mind sharing your opinion/experience please? Thank you mr VIPER

@Beaston61 Yeah thats the model @8vpiper was referring to so no bracket needed Where have you heard that overheating inssues of 7200rpm drives? Its sounds nonsensical as Ive never noticed anything like that myself. For games that use heavy installs or digital games then the performance boost of the 7200rpm drive is noticeable. Its not night/day by any means, but with a higher rpm you get slighter faster installs and loading times. Is it worth the little extra outlay? Sure. Id say so.

I'm doing back up of my 320GB HDD so I can put it onto a 500GB using a powered Imation Apollo Pro UX external hard drive that has a 3.5" 750gb, 7200 RPM formatted as FAT32. I bought the 2.5" 500GB HDD for the PS3 back in January and tried to do it than but after two 24-27 or so hours tries with the progress bar stuck i think 99% for several hours I gave up. This is the second time I will be upgrading my PS3 the last time I took out the original 80GB to put in the 320GB HDD and that only took a 2-3 hours to back up and another 2-3 hours to do the reinstall and it went without a hitch.
Has anyone backed up their PS3 and how long did it take you also what size was the data that was being transferred? Did you use a USB powered or powered external hard drive formatted NTFS or FAT32 and was it 2.5" or 3.5"?

Edit: I needed to do a Rebuild Database (defragment) under PS3's Safe Mode.

It is not a X button... it's a cross button. Because they are symbols not letters.
