So I picked up a backwards compatible ps3. It worked good when I first got it , I was able to play ps2 games such as gta vice city and ps3 games aswell. Now I have 2 issues. It wont read ps2 games anymore. It sounds like its trying but nothing will work. I tried 4 different games same problem. Wont play dvd's either. Then I put a ps3 game in and it worked for the time being loaded up then my console got excessively loud and shut off with a red light. I flipped the hard shut off switch on the back and then It came back on. How can I fix these issues. I suspect the laser in the disc reader is bad. Where can I get one from?
1) If it can't read DVDs or PS2 discs (also DVDs) then it sounds like a laser is broken. Can it play PS1/black disc PS2 titles still (both are CDs)?
2) Sounds like it's overheating. I'd suggest a PC repair shop might be able to apply new thermal paste and hoover out any dust stuck in the console.
There used to be a company in the north-east called Console Doctor who did all manner of PS3 repairs but it looks like they only do repairs on PS4 onwards these days.
