One of the most controversial endings in gaming history, we all thought this topic was done and dusted. Suddenly, I'm seeing it pop up around the web again, be it on forums, podcasts, or even during convention panels.
It would seem now that everyone's had plenty of time to mull it over, new discussions are sprouting out of just a few comments on the subject. I was just wondering what everyone thinks now, over one year later and with the fourth Mass Effect game in production.
Give me your honest opinion - was it really that bad? Was it actually OK? What was your first reaction? Do you think the extended cut DLC fixed the problems? Let's do this.
I was upset by the ending but when I say upset I mean sad. I never felt like picking up a pitchfork and joining a mob like alot of people did.
Mass Effect 2 is my favorite in the series but the 3rd is still a great game especially when you play it with all the DLC. I feel like the end has made people judge the whole game so much more harshly which is really a shame.
I know some people claim that are done with the series now with the way it ended but not me. I can't wait to see how the series moves forward.
Mass effect 3 was my favorite of the series. I loved it up until the ending (so you know, I only experienced it with the extended cut). The worst part about the ending is that I was confused as to what any of the choices were. I literally stared at the decisions for 20 minutes and didn't know what to make of it. I'm not saying it had to be as clear cut as infamous 2, but at least in that game, I understood the decisions and the one I chose carried emotional weight. I felt the deaths of Mordin and legion affected me much more than the ending did.
I never understood the problem the people had with the endings. I got the game the day after it came out and played it through Spring Break. When I came to the ending the only disappointment I had was not fully knowing what happened to the other species because of my choices, but I pretty much knew what will happen since I went "Full Paragon" with Synthesis ending(best ending IMO). I knew the Reapers where gonna help out, the Krogan were gonna prospere, the Quarians and Geth will make friends, and AIs and Rachni weren't going to be a hassle anymore. The plot holes I never had a problem with because if you went thru the entire trilogy and check the codex and refrence the game material stuff made sense (yes even the explosions of the Mass Relays) The Extended ending made my emotions come out more than the original ending and playing through the game with all the DLCs made me fall in love with again and again. The only problem I have with the ending was that it cause a controversy between players that couldn't put 2 and 2 together (Using the Codex from the series and remembering the trilogy canon). IMO the reason they didn't fully show the ending the first time was to see if the game sold well, so they can use what happen in Mass Effect Trilogy as awesome Introduction into the next Mass Effect game, for a second just imagine that. It would be like the introduction into a vast universe that you know but has change kinda, like the feelings between All three of the Mass effect games beginning combine into one.
honestly i never got why people were so up about it yeah it wasn't the giant send off we were expecting but when you look at it Mass Effect 2 only had 2 choices for it's ending Save or Destroy and no one cared about that so ME3 actually gave you more choice than ME2
but what i do get is that in the original it wasn't explained very well and some things didn't make any sense (like the relays blowing up and the Normandy crash landing)
"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"
"Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I think part of the issue was that in Mass Effect 2, the impact of your decision was pretty well laid out - you had a good idea what the consequences were. Like I said, in ME3, I literally laid on my bed for 20 minutes saying "What the heck?" Not as in a "I hate this" but as in a confused, I really don't know what option will achieve what I want it to.
I was incredibly underwhelmed, simply because I had played through the first game 3 times and the second game 4 times. With all those different decisions I made throughout my different playthroughs, it was disappointing to see that nothing really mattered in the end.
Best thread ever

I agree with the DLC point. ME3 felt like a much more complete game after installing Leviathan, Omega, and Citadel. Without them, I thought the single player felt a little hollow, especially when compared to ME2.
