What do you guys do when you simply get bored of a game and as hard as you try you simply can't keep playing it long enough to beat it? I have a few games in mind where this is happened, and even though some of the games I am playing are borderline masterpieces I simply cannot get into them. What do you guys do to get back into a game that you are bored of?

Some of the games I am having trouble getting into are:

Mass Effect 2
Resistance 2
Kingdoms of Amalur
Deus Ex
Soul Sacrifice

I know what you mean.  In fact I think it happens more often when you are playing a game that everyone says is a masterpiece.  What works really well for me is that I let go all of my expectations and instead of going into a game thinking "let's see if you are really as good as everyone says you are"  I just let the game show me what it's about.  I try to give all the games I play a chance by paying really close attention to the story, and really try hard to understand the mechanics instead of just mashing buttons blindly.
I also try to be open minded and give whatever changes (if it's a sequel) a chance. Rarely do I find a game with nothing to like about.  As long as I feel that I have given a game enough time and effort, and if I still don't like it I will move on to something else.  That being said I rarely start a game that I don't finish eventually even if it's like a year afterwards.

Oh yeah I know what you're talking about. My solution is simple. Just be really picky about what games to get and not get everything. I don't need to play a game everyday. At the moment im romping The Last Of Us and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on my 3DS, it will be a while until I start something new, Im perfectly happy with them. TLOU - it's my 3rd playthrough now trying to find everything on hard mode.

A prime example though for something I can't get into is TLOU Multiplayer. Its well made and all but at the end of the day its another shooter, I came for Ellie and Joel and since they have no role in multiplayer I quit on it after an hour of gameplay.

So it really is simple: if it ain't fun anymore, don't play it. And if you're choosing your games carefully you MOSTLY (not always) can avoid wasting 60 euro...

I definitely felt the same way about Mass Effect 2.  Did you play 1, though?  I could not get past 2 at all...but for me, i think it was because the story didn't really draw me in very well.  That said, I made the decision to play through 1, and it changed the way I looked at the series.  If you haven't done it, you should give it a try...I know you'd probably have to get mass effect 1 digitally (or the trilogy, but that makes less sense because you own 2)  I'm glad I did, especially since it introduced me to Mass Effect 3.

I kinda felt the same way about Kingdoms of Amalur - but I might try it again.

I also feel the same way about every Rockstar game I have ever played.

Finally, on a semi-related note, I always have a blast with the Assassins creed games while I'm playing them (2 and later), but when I'm finished with them, I always feel like I'm growing tired of it until I play the next one a year later. I don't get them at launch - so my year is like a couple months behind everyone.

Same goes for Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.

Ah man. I don't know if I agree with that part.  I never finished Oblivion, but I sank about 400-500 hours into 3 characters.  It was my first game and it was so much more than enough until I could afford more games after I dropped on a ps3.

Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time.

To each his own.

As for me I would probably have to say Little Big Planet 1 and 2. When I first got my PS3 they were high on my want list and they never really grabbed me like I thought they would. They are by no means bad games they just for whatever reason didn't pull me in.

If I'm having trouble really getting into a game I usually trade it in. Fortunately I haven't had that problem too often.

I could never get into Dishonored or Anarchy Reigns (the only two relatively recent games I've failed to play for more than 5 hours). Not entirely sure why, as both games are clearly good in their own right.

Yeah, I bought Mass Effect 2 when it was released on PS3 because my brother says that it is his favorite series and that I HAVE to play them. So I played, beat, and enjoyed it, but then the Mass Effect trilogy came out and my brother once again told me that I HAVE to play the original Mass Effect because it is his favorite game of all time and he's beaten it a gazillion times, so I gave in and bought the entire trilogy because if I was going to play Mass Effect I might as well play through all of them with one character because I hadn't played the third one yet. So, I beat the original Mass Effect and really enjoyed it. I think it is better than Mass Effect 2. Now I am trying to get through Mass Effect 2 for the second time, and I just cannot get into it again. The only reason that I will eventually beat it is because I want to play Mass Effect 3 and I want to get my moneys worth for buying the trilogy. I will probably just start playing it again when I get through my backlog of games. Hopefully with time my interest in the game will come back.

I had that same problem with Dishonored, so I just took a couple month break from it and then came back to it and beat it within a couple days. I have mixed feelings about that game, but overall I would recommend you try and finish it. I think that it is worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate Mass Effect 2 and the series as a whole. I think that it is a very well-made game and I don't have many complaints about it.

Also, I agree with your feelings about LittleBigPlanet. I never bought them (except for LBP Vita), but I got the first one for free and I never beat it. I probably played it for 6 hours total and that was mainly with my girlfriend cause she isn't a gamer and it was fun for her.

I think regardless of whether a game is hailed as a 'masterpiece' or not, it's all down to personal preference.

I only play games if I enjoy them, not because I feel like a should have played them and finshed them. I played Borderlands 1 for 3 hours, and I just didn't like it so I didn't then waste further hours on the game which I knew just wouldn't get to the end of. Same goes for Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and all the dead space games.

Games are there to be enjoyed, and sometimes you can get yourself caught up in the politics of gaming and you just need to remember that if you're not enjoying a game, just don't bother with it.

Oh, and yes, Soul Sacrifice. I've fully given up with that game. I bought it on release day and I'm still stuck on the last chapter on the Cyclops. I only wish I had not bought the digital version so I could flog it on Ebay.

I bought Elders Scrolls 4 after I put hundreds of hours into Fallout 3 and Skyrim expecting that I would love it, but I did not put more than 4 or 5 hours into the game before i put it on the shelf to collect dust.

I think that is what I am going to have to start doing now. I have trouble not playing a game much after I beat it which is bad cause then I just spend a lot of money on new games. Luckily, my brother buys a lot of games, so I never really don't have a game that I have already played.

I just finished Dishonored this week and it reminded me how much I hate playing in first person. I don't mind it for playing online but I hate it for any kinda of story mode.

I have mixed feelings about it overall. I don't regret getting it but I don't think I will be playing it that much after I grab a few more trophies.

I did really like the environment the water at times looked amazing and the voice work was enjoyable.

I can completely understand if you've already played Skyrim.  While I think all of the guild quests are SO MUCH better in Oblivion, the gameplay mechanics and graphics are just way better in Skyrim.  It would be difficult to go backwards like that.  But really, most of the guild quests in skyrim are sucky compared to Oblivion (especially the Thieves guild, Mages guild/college and Dark Brotherhood).  I was pretty disappointed in that regard, actually.

I think you're right about the first person part. I generally don't play a lot of games in that perspective, the only standout being Skyrim in which I usually switch to first person during combat - but other than that I'm always in third person when exploring, etc. Because Dishonored was so stealth focused I found it really difficult to adapt because of the viewpoint.

@ztpayne7 I agree on that one. Oblivion's quests just had a certain charm that Skyrim's lacked - but the gameplay of Skyrim makes it impossible for me to go back to Oblivion. I mean, Skyrim's combat isn't great to begin with but it gets the job done. Regressing from that would be ridiculously difficult.

the Whole Final Fantasy XIII saga i got both FFXIII and FFXIII_2 but i could never be bothered to finish them i get to the last bit then just stop for some reason but any other Final Fantasy game i will see to the end (and i have on all of them)

i don't know what it is about FFXIII but i just don't have the motivation to finish them

still FFXV is coming sometime and that one looks like it will be great

I have well over 100 hours in to Skyrim and all of them in 3rd person.
