I'm thinking of buying a used PS3 but I'm not sure what i should go for. I'd really like to have the original fat model with PS2 compatability but I've heard so many horror stories about the YLOD and overheating. Personally I've owned Every Nintendo and Sony home console to date and I've never had one actually get so hot that it stopped working. Is this just an exaggerated story or was it really that bad? I mean yeah any console will overheat if you play it non stop for 24 hours a day. I never have mine running more than a couple hours at a time.
Seriously if you own a launch model that still works to this day please tell me.
On the other hand the slim seems pretty nice and the super slim while cheap looking is rather adorable.
I've got a launch PS3 but I had it fully refurbished (fan swapped out, thermal paste replaced etc.) a few years back when it started sounding like a wasp's nest full of angry hairdryers after a few minutes of game time. It has been perfect ever since. It's certainly the best version to get if you're interested in a full array of PlayStation playability with as few consoles hooked up as possible, that's for sure!
@LN78
How difficult is it to refurbish a PS3 yourself if i were to get a fat model? I know getting one of those used could be a crap shoot but if I'm careful who I'm buying from maybe it'll turn out okay.
@Truegamer79 There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube but I'm useless at that stuff so I paid a professional modder to do mine. That was about 3 years ago and as I said it's been spot on ever since - and that's with pretty regular usage of 8 to 10 hours a week. They're pretty hard to come by and people do charge a premium so if it's longevity and reliability you're after I'd go for one of the slim models (as opposed to super slim) as they're really well built and sturdy as you like.
The first: Fat 80GB Metal Gear 4 bundle July 2008. Has 3 memory card slots, 4 USB ports, and has emulation for PS2 games. Model CECHE01 MG. This unit needed repaired after 8 months. 6 months later the graphics began to be corrupted. Bundle cost $450.
My second PS3 purchased for Xmas 2009, and replaced my fat 80GB model, was the then new 120GB slim @ $300. No PS2 play, no memory card slot, and only 2 USB ports. However it was and still is quiet, and still works after after all these years without any repairs. I used it daily for 6 years, 2010 through 2015, with also use since for replays of favorites. Model CECH-2001A.
All PS3's play PSI game discs and music cds, some fats will play PS2 game discs. The super slims I don't know much about. My recommendation is what I have had a good experience with. That is the slim model. Also my knowledge is that all fat models are noisy. My fat was noisy and became hot. My slim has always became warm on the bottom and where the hdmi cable plugs in, but not hot. I do keep my PS3 elevated from the surface of the shelf when used.
