With the revival of the "scary game" genre I think it's only a matter of time until someone brings us the tentacle horror of lovecraft. Thoughts? Wishes? Discuss! Also on an somewhat unrelated note: is that 2005 game "Call of Cthulhu" thats on Steam any good?

Yes, oh yes! Love the Lovecraft-lore and just happen to have burned through some of his books recently.
But as much as I'd love a good Lovecraft game, I doubt it'll happen. Lovecraft to me seem not very well known outside a relatively big circle of fans and horror fans. Sure, he has his followers, but I'm just not certain if any company would spend any decent amount of money on the franchise.
If it would happen, I think a game like maybe Outlast would be fitting. Something where the hero is underpowered against the foes he's set up against. His waning sanity should also taken into account/the game design. Maybe all told in Lovecraftian fashion, where you follow the diary entries of a dead uncle or such, exploring his old mansion, maybe to be following further clues to other locations eventually (R'lyeh? The Mountains of Madness?).
If this game you speak of is the same that also was on the original Xbox, it's said to be good for a Lovecraft game. It loosely follows the events of Shadows over Insmouth and also takes the protagonists failing sanity into account by warping your vision and such. The controls are said to be a little clunky, but I heard good things about it from a friend. Never played it myself, sadly.
Oh hi, Reverend, kinda suspected you'd be on the lovecraft-train with me! Okay thanks for that information, I might check it out on steam (its only 9 Euro so...). Well what would I want from a lovecraft game... do you know ARKHAM HORROR the boardgame? THIS would be an awesome coop-videogame in my opinion. It has everything. Investigation, sanity-meter, other dimensions and of course "the old ones" etc... Lovely.
I also think that no "big" developer would pickup lovecraft that easily, I was also more thinking of the indy-crowd. Outlast with lovecraft tropes, I'd definitely get it!

And yeah, not surprised we're on the same train there.
If it's only 9 bucks, give it a try. Another big Lovecraft-fand-friend of mine said it has some flaws in the game design, but the Lovecraft atmosphere is spot on, so...
Aw yiss...an adaption of the board game would be fantastic! With online, plz. And yes, every proper Lovecraft game would have to feature the old ones in some way, agreed.
As for good games...something along the line of Alan Wake would work well, too, I think. Or something like Xcom Enemy Unkown would be awesome. That one was one of my dearest games, last year and ever.
favorite book is at the mountains of madness! still pissed that del torros movie adaption got shot down. probably would have been amazing. also i am so very happy about all the horror games coming out for ps4. its like a nightmare that i never want to wake from!
I love The mountains of Madness, Call of Cthulu and the Rats in the Walls, I'd highly recommend you get Eternal Darkness for the Nintendo Gamecube and read some Hellboy comics, as they are pretty chock-full of Cthulu inspired mythos.
Are you serious?! Oh please, let this happen...and let it be good!
haha I just feel the same... Im NECKdeep into lovecraftian fiction right now, lol. Even got me a really weird dream I somewhat put into a short story. Love it! Creeping myself out, ha. Thanks Howie!

I'm about to order a bunch of Lovecraft novel. Went through some or 'em recently but I just have the German translation from when I was a teen. Since I consume media in the original version if possible nowadays, I can't wait to read them again in English.

Welcome, Colt.
Funny, same here. Living in austria it's hard to consume all my media in english. I'd kill for something like "Watchever" with english originals over here. Everything over here is just german because everyone assumes all people are too dumb to speak any language besides their native one.
I recently got the Barnes & Noble leatherbound complete Works of HP Lovecraft. Lovely work of art and a true collectors item!

I'm drooling on my keyboard just now...that's one hell of a beautiful book. I'll see where I can get this.
And the "where the hell do I get this in the OV-problem"...amen, brotha. Luckily, I live in Berlin, which means there's half a dozen cinemas here that show movies in the ov and plenty of video rentals to get Blu-Rays, which mostly have the ov sound track on 'em as well.
Many book stores have English books as well (or can order them), nowadays...at least here. And of course there's always Amazon, should everything else fail.
But a few years back, it was a real struggle to scratch that ov-itch.
Of course I still have to deal with friends that go like: "Why do you want to see this in English? The dubbed version isn't so bad!" "Well, have you ever compared the versions? Or the trailers, at least? It's a huge difference!" "No...but it can't be so bad, right." "*Skeeve just gnaws at his wrists silently, while crying"
Hey guys, saw your conversation about Cthulhu mythos games. Wanted to let you know that I'm developing one right now. It's a 2d sidescrolling game. There is an inventory, firearms, health items. Aiming is free aim, not limited to straight or 45 degrees. Weapons are upgradeable and have different attributes, accuracy, power, etc. No sanity meter though. The story will use HP Lovecraft creatures and cults and have nods to some of the stories. This game will be out on iOS and Android to start, most likely PC as well.
Hmm it's really great to hear that, I'm only a bit reserved about things like that, like... how far into development are you, is there some artwork to be seen? I don't mean to be rude but "starting a game" and actually finishing one are two different pairs of shoes. That said if your project sees the light of the day I'd very glad to check it out, also if it'S something bigger or you consider bringing it to Vita/PS4 at some point and consider kickstarter to fund it, I'd also be willing to put down some money towards it, given it's looking promising enough!

I'm a bit reserved as well. I love anything Lovecraft, but a Lovecraft game without some sanity-meter? Consider me cautiously interested, but I'd have to see more.
But since I don't really play on PC anymore (outside of Hearthstone and the occasional round of C&C3 skirmish), It would have to be released on the PS4 to reach me.
@Scollurio Yes, do have some screenshots. Right now working on level design and figuring out non-standard enemies. Have put in some weapons, items, and movement of main player, majority of movement from standard enemies, majority of combat with standard enemies as well. Not to say there isn't a ways to go, but it's not just an idea in my head.
@Reverend_Skeeve I will definitely consider the sanity meter, right now have stamina, going to take that out anyway, might rework and make it a sanity meter. The game is coming out on mobile devices and should work on just about any android device, even older ones.
