@Octane I know - Hopefully they don't mess this up - could look great in 4k HDR...
The film itself may not be good for converting to a game but they could take a lot from it and make something unique in that world. Avatar 2 perhaps...

I don't know about best movie game. Yes most games based off of movies are cheap cash ins, but there have been several good ones.
My favorite would be Batman Returns on the SNES. They just seemed to nail everything with that game. The feel, the atmosphere heck they even used the iconic Danny Elfman sound track!!
Other great ones IMO would be
Indian Jones Greatest Adventures
Lego Star Wars (even though they are a bit more comical at times)
Lord of the Rings Conquest did a great job I felt.
And of course the Aladdin games on Genesis and SNES as well.
I am sure that I am missing a few.

@Tasuki To be honest I meant it more as a joke. I initially watched the video and thought it was an April 1st thing as they were showing off the visuals from the movie as if it was an actual game video. If that's how it looked as a game, it would be one of the best visuals in a game and possibly the best game too...
I know not all have been 'bad'.

@Tasuki Don't feel bad. I posted it for two reasons - one because I would be excited for this game and as PushSquare hadn't covered its anouncement. I put it here. Secondly the title was meant as a bit of a joke because of the video itself. After posting, I wasn't sure if people would assume I was thinking the video showed game footage - so I added the 2nd post.
I didn't think someone would think it was a general post about movie based games in the PS4 forum - more in the General forum. As most games have their own post, I thought it would lead to a conversation about Avatar as a game - what they hope/want. Whether Massive/Ubisoft is a good choice etc...

Wow 2009 called and wants its adaptation back. I think the main problem with movie adaptations is they need to make a release date with the films. Most major films froms script to screen take on average 18 months to 2 years (thinking big franchises). Most quality AAA games need at least 2 years, normally 3.
So if a movie tie in doesnt have to make a release date and can work at the right pace, it could work. Avatar 2 is due 2018 I think, maybe 2019. Then we can expect Avatar 3, 4 and 5 (I am not joking, they are filming them all back to back).
Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot
@Rudy_Manchego I keep hearing that Avatar 2 is in the works but have been hearing that since the first released. You could argue that Alien:Isolation is a tie in to the movies as its set after the first movie and before Aliens. I know the story is 'separate' to a degree but is also a sequel of sorts too. The movies focused on 'Ripley' and Aliens picks up her story after the first where as the game focuses on her daughter looking for answers whilst she is 'drifting through space'. Its not like 'Goldeneye' (which was a 'great' movie based game) in which the campaign followed the plot but as an extension to the cinematic universe.
I hope that the Video game of Avatar is more like Alien:Isolation than Goldeneye. A separate story in its own right rather than to play out the events of the movie we watched. In a lot of ways, I do think that following a movie plot can actually ruin the game. Knowing what to expect, where the plot twists are, how it ends etc takes a lot away from the story. Even if the game-play is 'great', these days its usually the Story that separates games. When Goldeneye released, there was very few FPS games, even less with a 'story' as focused as that had but with so many FPS games these days, the things that separate them are 'story' and of course MP. Doom had to go back to its 'roots' to be 'different'. Point I am making is that if the game-play can't be a surprise, then its often the quality of the story that sets it apart from the others. Following the plot of a known story isn't going to offer up any surprises - which is why I think a lot of movie based games fail. Lego games follow the plot but throw in its own unique humour.
Avatar - the new game - could be a great extension to the universe. Visually, the world of Pandora is stunning. There is a lot of variation in potential game-play they could implement - from FPS to a third person-action adventure to flying combat - whether they opted to focus on the humans or the Na'vis. They could mix it all up and have a variety of these - even turn it into an RPG kind of like Horizon where you play as a Human 'Avatar' and have to learn to become part of the Na'vis and survive on Pandora with all the indigenous wildlife as well as have an 'Assassins Creed' style dual story - like Desmond/Ezio for example and instead of the Animus, you have those 'genetic linking pods'.

Filming for Avatar 2 starts in August, at least according to a third party website that keeps track of film production dates. Regardless whether that happens or not, I think that a 2018 release date is still a bit of a stretch. It's probably going to be 2019, assuming filming actually starts this year.
@Octane Its been rumoured to start filming for a long time now and keeps slipping. As a result the release date keeps changing too. The latest news is that filming is expected to start in late summer this year but until it does, I think I will remain sceptical...
