Topic: Building the ultimate PS4 collection (almost) from scratch

I was recently going through my game collection and came to the realisation that I only owned 5 physical PS4 games. Over the past few years I'd sold games to fund purchases of newer games and it made me a little sad that I didn't really own any games for what is one of my favourite consoles of all time.

I've never been a huge fan of digital (aside from the convenience) and I don't like relying on PS Plus for games because games can be taken away at any time. With games like Spec Ops: The Line being recently delisted due to licences expiring, it got me thinking that some of these games might not be playable in the future.

So I've decided that I'm going to build an ultimate physical PS4 collection almost from scratch. The games I own right now are Cyberpunk 2077, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil VII and Street Fighter V (A random collection, I know). To make it a bit of a challenge. I'm going to try and buy the games I want for as little money as possible using eBay, Vinted, Facebook marketplace and CeX

For now, I'm not going pick up any Remasters. I just want the games that defined the PS4/Xbox One era. Any suggestions are welcome. From games that you think are are absolutely essential to underrated or hidden gems. I'll update here every now and then with how my collection is coming along for anyone that's interested!

All the Sony first party PS4 stuff would be a good start… so The Order 1886, The Last of Us: Remastered, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-man, infamous: Second Son, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us part 2 etc.

Didn't know until recently that Broforce is available on physical!

@colonelkilgore Definitely a solid start. I'm probably going to skip games that have had remasters on PS5 for now, but The Order 1886, Infamous Second Son and Days Gone are excellent shouts. Thanks!

@sanderson72 Would you say that comes under the 'hidden gem' category? I've always wanted to give it a go as it looks like a solid Contra Clone. Looks like it could be on the pricey side for physical though 😬

@BookhouseBoy Definitely grab Tetris Effect, Sakura Wars (still PS4 exclusive), 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, Rayman Legends, The Witcher 3, and Yakuza Zero.

Currently Playing: Fields of Mistria (PC); Cookie Clicker (PC); Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC); Overboard! (PC)

Ugh. Men.

@Ralizah Some great suggestions there! A few games I'm not familiar with at all as well so I'll have to heck them out!

@BookhouseBoy It's one of the most fun games on the PS4 - hilarious, pixelated violence!

@BookhouseBoy What an excellent project. Surely Death Stranding should make the cut? I highly recommend it. Looking forward to seeing how you get on 👍

@Bundersvessel Thanks! I've already bought a few online but will update when they arrive to check condition etc. crazy how cheap the PS4 library is to collect right!

That's a great suggestion! Was tempted to just get the PS5 version but the PS4 copy is so much cheaper. Do you know if there is a free upgrade?

(Love the profile pic btw 👍🏻)

PS3 is where the cheap stuff is these days - my son went into CEX, spent a fiver and came out with 3 games!

@sanderson72 I've just had a browse on the CeX website and you're not wrong! That might have to be my next project!

@BookhouseBoy Likewise your avatar game is strong 😁

If memory serves, it was £5 to upgrade to the Director’s Cut. Reasonable I thought.

@BookhouseBoy Interesting project and best of luck to you. It’s definitely a good time to pick up some of these games for a really low price.

I enjoy sifting through the second-hand gaming stores in person. Buying online is often cheaper and has more options and availability, but there’s a certain satisfaction with searching and finding a game in the store. It’s kind of our version of thrift store or yard sale shopping, or like the people who enjoy hunting for antiques at flea markets.

Anyways, to the question at hand —
I think a good place to focus is on PS4 games that are “locked” in the console and don’t have PS5 versions or former PS3 versions. So the number one game would be Bloodborne (I don’t think I saw it on the suggestions yet). Others might include: The Last Guardian, Gravity Rush 2, and Nier Automata.

@BookhouseBoy
1. Bloodborne Game of the Year Edition (Absolute perfection!)
2. Dark Souls Trilogy edition (Yes you can get 1 and 2 on PS3/360 but those are 3 separate boxes with fully updated games on disc AND DLC on disc)
3. Batman Arkham Knight (amazing game)
4. Sekiro Shadows Die Twice
5. Elden Ring (even though you can play it on PS5, the PS4 edition is SOLID)
6. Marvel's Spider-Man - it is worth it just for the old Peter face!
7. Assassin's Creed Origins
8. Assassin's Creed Odyssey
9. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate - because ONLY the PS4 version has ALL DLC on disc (comes on 2 discs)
10. Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - same as MK11U!

BookhouseBoy

@Bundersvessel For sure is a good deal. It's cheaper to pick up the PS4 version and upgrade than get the PS5 directors cut!

@Th3solution Thank you! I'm the same to be honest but where I live, there aren't many bricks and mortar game shops anymore so the only option is CeX which is very hit and miss. I'm just going to where I can find games the cheapest!

Bloodborne is very High on my list. Currently looking for a good price for the GOTY edition. Funnily enough, I've also been looking at copies of the Last Guardian as it has gone pretty cheap and I never actually played it! Nier Automata is also on my list (the Game of Yohra edition) and I'm watching ting to see if the Gravity Rush 2 remaster rumours are true! Thanks for the solid suggestions!

@Zuljaras Nice! Definitely some bangers in there to consider! I hadn't even though of picking up Spider-Man again for old Peter's face (still don't like the new one) and I never even knew that little factoid about MK11. That's definitely on my list now! GoT as well!

BookhouseBoy

BookhouseBoy

@Zuljaras Oh, this is great! Thanks for that. I will be putting through quite a few through the database.

@Korra No remasters to start with. I'd like a nice robust collection of games that you can only get for PS4. I'll add Alien Isolation as it's not a remaster. Killzone is definitely going on the list though. Dirt cheap and a quintessential PS4 game to have as it was a launch game!
