The Order was critically panned for being relatively short and having limited gameplay. It is definitely true that The Order was a "Cinematic Experience" in that it was like watching an 8 hour movie (that's a long movie!) which you happen to be able to interact with occasionally. The graphics and sound were absurdly good, and the movie aspect of it (plot, voice acting) were quite enjoyable.

The fact that it was a cover shooter suited the game, since the story and atmosphere didn't call for someone who ignored danger and just went in guns blazing without cover.

The thing is that this isn't the first game to be like this. Metal Gear Solid is critically acclaimed pretty much for every release, despite having similar flaws. MGS2 and MGS 4 were more than 40% cut-scenes, sometimes with cut-scenes 20 minutes up to an hour long. And the endings of those games, sorry, devolved into existential nonsense. Yes, the gameplay was different in that MGS was one of the earlier stealth-action games (first? I don't remember) but honestly the it wasn't that hard or out of this world (the controller switching thing aside). I do remember that the reason I caved in and bought my PS2 was how ridiculous the graphics in MGS2 were .

So while I can appreciate people not accepting or not liking that games have started to take over entertainment for alot of people and the line between movie and game has blurred. I can accept people wanting more gunplay or just liking open world games. But I really can't reconcile how bad the reception for the order were and how amazing they are for MGS. In terms of succeeding at being a story-based game the order succeeded much more than MGS, since at least the orders story and ending were coherent

I guess the major difference between MGS and The Order is that when you do get to control your character, there is a lot more choice about how you actually play in MGS. The Order is much more scripted and utilises a lot of quick time events too. Because of this MGS has a lot more replayability.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Metal Gear Solid on PSone was incredibly innovative, though, at least at the time (although I'd personally argue that it still is). There are so many nuances to MGS that make it special. The boss fights, all the crazy codec calls, the gadgets, the environmental detail, the secrets, the different endings... I could go on. Honestly, I don't think it's all that comparable to The Order when you break it down.

I don't think The Order is a terrible game by any means, but I think its flaws are clear to see. I also think it's a game that's begging for a far better sequel, but that's looking unlikely at this point.

Plain and simple Metal Gear has a following and as a result a good amount of that following are blinded just because it's Metal Gear. I am pretty sure that if you released Metal Gear V but called it something else and changed the characters and gave it to a good amount of the people they probably wouldn't hold it in such high regard.

Also I think the fact that it's Kojima's last Metal Gear has something to do with it too. I will be really surprised if the next installment if there is one, gets as much praised.

I bought the Phantom Pain for $28 whereas I could not even be bothered to buy The Order when it was $9 on the PSN.

I am not a fan of "movies with interactive interludes" games, but MGS adds variety where you can try different approaches to missions, even going for pacifist options. IMO The Order relies too heavily in its (admittedly impressive) graphics and production values. I still believe that the game should have been sepia or even B&W so it fits more with the period, and because the game already uses so few colors.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

@Tasuki: To be fair though, Metal Gear is known for its story, and V is a continuation of that story. If you changed the names around, then it would be confusing as it's built around having an existing universe established with other games. Imagine if they did that with a LOTR or Harry Potter movie. It wouldn't be as good or make as much sense since they are designed to be continuations of stories.

There is no comparison really, and I really liked The Order, I'm not trying to slate it. The difference is that gameplay wise, Metal Gear has not only always been excellent, it has always also pushed the envelope and has been miles ahead from what other games in the genre are doing. Compare The Order to Uncharted for example, both story-driven, linear shooters. Which one would you say is better? And then compare MGS V, to Assassin's Creed, or Thief, or Hitman, or any recent stealth game you can think. The mechanics and systems in MGS are not only better, they are unrivalled.

That's the difference in my opinion, MGS is king in it's genre, while The Order, while good, is not really anywhere near the top.

Just started playing the order tonight. Graphics are the nuts. If only The Evil Within was powered by this technology.

While I can't speak for the quality of Order 1886, MGS generally has pretty good gameplay in it's games. While the games are pretty ambitious with their movie-like plots, they still manage to feel gamey, you know? As stated above, MGS has some more depth in it's gameplay, and you can take different options in how you do things. Strategy is also involved, especially during boss fights. The series tends to make you think while you play, and not just about it's crazy plot, either.

That said, MGS isn't really a game for everybody. Most people can't get past the long cutscenes (The main reason why MGS4 is rather infamous), and the constantly switching control schemes always take some getting used to.

Not played The Order but will at some stage. The MGS V story was the weakest of all the games so far. However after saying that I loved the actual gameplay it was a lot of fun to play. There was also a lot of attention to detail with fun things put in the game. I do not have a problem with a lot of cut scenes in a game its all about the journey for me and that can take many different forms.

@Mega-Gazz: I loved the Order - perfect game for playing over a couple of evenings, taking in the sights and environment. But that's where it ends. After those 2 evenings. There was nothing else to do. Nothing else to find. No point in replaying. It was limited fun.

MGS has limitless replay value, mgs 5 pp is on another planet to every game I have ever played bar footy manager and civilisation. I'm 72 hours in and still playing through finding new things to do. You really cant compare mgs pp to the Order once you have played both - as it is the most crazy comparison I can think of right now.... Maybe Crazy Taxi and Gran Turismo? Or Everybodys gone to the Rapture and Gears of War? Along those lines of crazy.

Ah The Order. Highly underappreciated in my book. I was a defender of the game from the first hour. Played through it 2,5 times and platinumed it. I think it was just wrongly marketed. If it was marketed as something similar than "Beyond Two Souls" (which I really didnt like) or an "on-rail-shooter with cinematic qualities" - people would've been amazed by the CHOICE and FREEDOM it offered (for an on-rail-shooter). I loved the setting, the music and the acting, the graphics and for me it truly was the very first real next gen title. I regret that I most likely won't see more of it because pretty much everyone hated it for all the wrong reasons. About MGS... I can see where people are coming from but I personally never really got "into" it. It never clicked. Same with the Final Fantasy Games, they just never worked for me.
