Feels like just yesterday that people were protesting when Jeff Gerstmann gave Twilight Princess an 8.8. Things never change.
LOL. Thanks for reminding me of that one, one of the biggest 'controversies' in GS history. I remember being surprised it didn't get a 9.5 or a 10 (at that point in time Zelda games usually scored in that range all the time so I just assumed it was automatic). What made that whole thing worse was you had the 'system wars' part of the forum and these clowns would give each fanboy group moronic nicknames and then place 'bets' on games being AAAA (10), AAA (9-9.9), AA (8-8.9) or A (7.9 and lower). I had to avoid system wars for about 2 weeks. Usually it was entertaining but that 8.8 made everyone go insane. I'd like to be able to say Jeff got a good laugh at it, but I'm sure the threats and pathetic insults thrown his way were not fun.
Over here in the UK I am just trying to work out how to pass 2 weeks!
Thank you i'm laughing my ass off
No probs. As Sammy says you need to form your own opinions on games. If you love it you will play it. I understand the rants but sometime just step back and say "That is not going to stop my playing what I love!". I just feel sorry for players who buy games based upon what others say. They are missing out....
I just wanna add my 2 cents to this. Of course reviewers have different tastes and are entitled to their opinion, but seriously. You gotta be competent in what you do. I always prefer when people who LIKE a certain genre, REVIEW this said genre. Why? Because people who LIKE the genre, will BUY the genre, so the opinion of a reviewer also liking the genre will mean more and be not unbiased (seriously, who ever is?) but he will know what to look out for, what works in that genre and what not. If there is a series you HATE, you also shouldn't review it in my opinion. I hate Dead Rising. With a passion, so no matter how good it is (it isn't) I really shouldn't review Dead Rising 3. Simple.
At the end of the day I keep it like that: most important: my own opinion and as a genera guide I found my place on the web (one of the main places is push square) where I find the reviewers agreeing mostly with my own opinions and vice versa, so I can use this as a guide. If some craphead at some site I don't even know gives a game I love a 7.5 I couldn't care less. I give his MOTHER a 7.5! lol

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.
I don't think reviews should just be from fans of the genre. After all, then we'd never get perspectives from people who are new to the genre, or don't have tons of experience with the genre, or aren't completely burnt out and disgruntled by the genre. Its always good to get a mix of opinions, which is why you should be checking multiple sites for different opinions, depending on what you're looking for. Just my 2 cents.
I also think reviews from people aren't fans of the genre is okay. You don't have to agree with a reviewer's opinion for that review to be helpful to you. After all, you're supposed to read between the lines. And If you're not a fan of the genre, but you end up liking that game, won't your review be extremely helpful to other nonfans of that genre? And if you dislike it, won't that also be helpful to those same people? I don't normally like shooters, but Blood Dragon was extremely fun for me, while Call of Duty 4 bored me. Wouldn't you want to know that if you're also not big on shooters?
The point of a review is to give people a perspective of a game. There's nothing wrong with there being a variety of perspectives.
