So as a huge Ridge Racer fan and lets be honest THE game which put the ps1 on the map, why the lack of news on a new RR for the PS4? Is it happening? Would you play a new Ridge Racer?

@KratosMD Careful. That salt will give you health issues.

Bandai has been working on Nintendo IP longer than that, it goes back to Mario Kart Arcades, a few exclusives, even one for Wii U, and Pokken.

"Smash Bros" was just the latest in a long line of development assistance.

Question is would the Nintendrones by it? After Project Cars...

@KratosMD "Bandai Namco has been in bed with Nintendo"

It came off as salty. Besides calling something salty is a common form of poking fun.

You know the more I hang around here the more I think you guys have the humour of Ben Stein.

Anyway, it was a joke and strengthening of your argument. Bite my head off or take it for what it is.

@KratosMD Well thats all well and good and I apologise.

Now on topic, there is a long history of BN collabs before Smash, arcade style things actually, so I could see Ridge Racer being a thing there, perhaps not exclusive though.

Regarding MP4...i dunno. Maybe? Kind of an odd genre to jump into with little to no experience.

As it stands Ridge Racer is likely to come to Switch, but unlikely to be exckusive unless BN wants to avoid competition from GT and Forza, and their own Project Cars.

But then they go against Mario Kart...

Ridge Racer on PS4? Yes please. It's one of PlayStation's defining franchises and it's a shame it's not had a release in so long. If they can make it good, I would probably buy it. We need more arcade racers.

I can't see Ridge Racer being a huge hit on the Switch. It's much more at home on the PlayStation console, but even then... I don't know how they would make it a relevant racer in the current gaming situation.

Besides, I don't have any hopes the new one will be any good at all. When was the last time Ridge Racer was awesome?

Why not? Ridge Racer has had several installments on Nintendo systems over the years(the 3DS one was pretty good). I'd love to see another appear on any system though.

@KratosMD Namco in bed with Nintendo, I would call it that. They have put as much stuffed out on PS and Xbox as Nintendo. Maybe they might have the odd project like Pokken or something like that but I wouldn't call that in bed with Nintendo.

@Kidfried Whilst Ridge Racer may be associated with the Playstation, it was in fact originally an Arcade game - as in the traditional Arcade cabinet game that was then made for console - like Out Run for example. Ridge Racer though has also been on N64, Game Cube and both Xbox and Xbox360 too - although the Original Xbox game was more a 'spin-off' than a 'Ridge Racer' game - R: Racing Evolution but the 'Ridge Racer' name returned on PS3/XB360 and PC. Ridge Racer 6 was a XB360 launch title and didn't come to PS but then RR7 was released on PS3 but not the 360 as a launch game for that console. In fact, Ridge Racer became synonymous as a launch title for various platforms. The original Ridge Racer was a launch title for the original PlayStation, made Ridge Racer V as a PlayStation 2 launch title in 2000, and subsequently Ridge Racer DS for the Nintendo DS, Ridge Racer for the PlayStation Portable, Ridge Racer 6 for the Xbox 360, Ridge Racer 7 for the PlayStation 3, Ridge Racer 3D for the Nintendo 3DS, and Ridge Racer for the PlayStation Vita - that's quite a lot of platforms that launched with a Ridge Racer title.

As for Handhelds, as I have already mentioned, Ridge Racer has appeared on the DS, 3DS, PS Portable, PS Vita as a launch game, it has however also appeared on Windows Mobile and most recently (more recently than any home console/platform) on iOS and Android. In fact the last Ridge Racer game released in 2016 on mobile iOS and Android platforms (Ridge Racer Draw and Drift) and the previous Ridge Racer Slipstream (2013) was also on iOS/Android mobiles.

If anything, this shows that Ridge Racer has gone from the Arcades, to Consoles and now is a mobile game and as such, Nintendo Switch is very much a possibility. Its not having to compete with the likes of Forza, GT, Project Cars, DriveClub, Assetto Corsa, or any of the other Racing games that are on these consoles. Competing with Mario Kart (or similar) is hardly 'competition' for Ridge Racer. Whilst they may be more Arcade than the others I mentioned, they are both still very different. RR would bring a more realistic aesthetic without the 'gimmicks' of weaponry.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

@KratosMD Maybe I honestly don't know and I don't feel like looking them up but they have had countless games on the other consoles heck Tekken at on time was a PlayStation exclusive, then you had Soul Caliber as a Dreamcast exclusive and many other games. First and foremost they are a third part and of course they will have side projects with Nintendo or Sony I wouldn't say they are in bed with them.

Platinum games has made Bayonetta 2 an exclusive for Nintendo as well are they in bed with Nintendo? What about Capom with Street Fighter V?

@Kidfried The point I was making was that Ridge Racer has been on mobile/portable platforms and isn't competing with the more recent sim based racers. The lack of competition on the Switch in particular is an advantage in this case and, as the only more realistic looking racing game, as well as the heritage that Ridge Racer has, it has a better chance of success. Sales are obviously not likely to be as 'big' as selling on all platforms but it could still do well on the Switch.

As you say, with all the other racers on PS4/Xbox, the team really would probably have to do something revolutionary to compete. Maybe its more Arcade nature could appeal to those who are not looking for the 'sim' racer but its Arcade nature could also help it flourish on the Switch. In recent years, its found a home on the mobile market so it wouldn't be too much work to bring the traditional Ridge Racer experience to the Switch too. Racing fans are more likely to want to play the Sim Racer for their more authentic racing experience rather than an arcade racer.

As I said, the series has been a launch title with the DS, 3DS, Playstation Portable and PS Vita too. The arcade format works well on portable devices where the depth and 'feel' that Sim Racers may not translate so well. Its not as if Ridge Racer ever went for 'realistic' handling with the ability to tweak various settings that affect the cars - things like brake bias, ride height, tyre pressure etc. Its always been a fun and fast paced arcade racer and that works perfectly well on handhelds and with Nintendo's 'general' philosophy with games. On PS4/XB1, there would be a weight of expectation and draw comparison with the other racers too.

Point is, Ridge Racer is perfect for the Switch. Whilst it could still be 'good' on other consoles too, the traditional Ridge Racer is more suited to Nintendo's console.

@Kidfried Ridge Racer has always been awesome!

@Bamozzy @mookysam @tasuki @kratos_md @link41 @JohnnyShoulder
What Namco need to do is double down on the magical RR type 4 sub game unlocking loads of cars, spread across a variety track combinations rather than just the same 8 in the same order in that game. It becomes super repetitive. Mix in some RR6 missions, angel car time trials from rr revolution and classic tracks from every game and its a win.

Ridge Racer went off the boil as it had an identity crisis and the drifting became ridiculous. This year however there is no need for speed underground, burnout 3 or fresh sim games releasing so its the perfect time for a reworked and retooled Ridge Racer imo.

I do worry that namco has lost alot of talent though as their games no longer look so technically accomplished in comparison to the competition. During the initial ps1 era Tekken and Ridge Racer looked like they came from another planet.

@themcnoisy Ok not sure why you @ me but honestly Ridge Racer was one of the few Namco games I didn't get into or cared too. Racing games are just not my thing outside of a few titles.
