Sega had Virtua Fighters and before that the very underrated Eternal champions. However, after Sega withdrawn from the hardware business no company had a first party 1 on 1 fighting game... That has changed now as Microsoft now has Killer Instinct and Nintendo will (probably) have Pokken Fighters soon... so I was thinking Sony should try launching a first party fighting franchise of their own... Fighting games are not as expensive or time consuming to make as say a FPS or a GTA type open world game.
I'd love to see a revamped ALL STARS Battle Royal. I really loved the first one and failed to see why it was such a dud, saleswise...
1. Characters were dull and uniteresting, their most beloved characters (and the most fitting ones) werent in that game, at least not until DLC... almost not a single character that made Sony what they are right now made it the list, i could make a list of 10 characters that has way more importance than Big Daddy (LOL not even an exclusive and the first one wasnt originally released on the PS3)
2. AWFUL system, made the entire core of the game worthless, the need of charge a bar to kill someone made the game dull most of the time... it was a weird decision to add an unnecesary complex system to a pick-up play game
3. Marketing, nobody knew about that game, and im not saying about TV ads, but marketing in general

and 4. Smash its so much better
Mostly number 4 and 1 but yeah everything said is why the game for the most part failed.
I'd like to see another Battle Royale as well. I really liked that game, even if it was doomed from the start. I thought the combat system was great, but it needed a much bigger budget. The mash-up stages were awesome, but I'd have liked to see the game delve a little deeper into the minutia of PlayStation fandom.
Also, I agree with everyone on the characters, but I don't believe for one minute that SuperBot didn't try to get the likes of Cloud, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro in the game. I think the biggest mistake Sony ever made is not locking down the latter two...
meh for me.... between tekken, MK, street fighter, injustice and all the others I think the market is saturated a lil.... Instead, they should hurry up and give us a proper Gran Turismo next gen experience.... after the flop of Driveclub, we need a proper racing game desperately

1. I loved the characters, freshly coming from Xbox360 and how differently they played, but that's down to opinion!
As for all the other points you mentioned, that's why I said REVAMPED! i.e. BETTER! And I played SO SO SO, SOOOOOOOOOO.... and even more SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much of Smash, I can't objectively rate it anymore, as how good it really is. All personal opinion of course!

Top 5 Indies I'd recommend you try: #1 Lovecraft's Untold Stories, #2 Moonlighter, #3 Hotline Miami, #4 Inside, #5 Into the Breach.

My cards are on Project Cars (yes I'm repeating myself). Knowing Polyphony (and LOVING GT) I don't expect GT7 to release before 2016 and be patched to completion up to 2017. Yes, I am serious. Yes I am bitter.

I was saying why it failed
But yeah its not that characters were completely bad, but if you are going to do a "PlayStation all star" and miss SO MANY of them it feels wrong, the whole idea of Smash is watching Yoshi beating the living crap out of Mario orthe final battle between DK and bowser!, not because it has super MLG pro level of gameplay or its full of stuff, is that fan service of things we never thought we would see one day !
Thats why i said characters were dull and uniteresting, i dont want to see Nathan Drake fighting Big Daddy, who cares about them... characters that have story in Playstation, is Nathan Drake a big character for PS ? Yes, but i still think there are other more deserving ones, even if there hasnt been a game ofthat franchise since forever (Kid Icarus, Duck Hunt, etc...)... why Nariko ? Fat Princess ? Dante (especially the new one) ? Radec !?!? WTF IS ISAAC CLARKE DOING IN THIS GAME... Where's cloud ? Spyro ? Crash ? Gabe Logan ? Snake ?
Im sure theres no one in this world who would have thought of Fat Princess as a character when they came up with the idea of this game, no one
