Topic: Should the PS4 have additional Game install options?

Would you like the options when installing games on a PS4 to install whole game now (including updates) like the PS3 or install in the background like it presently does. I find it frustrating with the current install facility where you get all excited that the game has installed and ready to start then once starting the game you find that you have to wait for the game to install anyway with games like Destiny & Far cry 4 plus when installed you have to re-start the game to install the updates. Even worse on the Crew you complete a couple of missions then have to wait for the game to fully install before you carry on. I personally prefer the old way of installing on the PS3 at least you know it's all done and dusted once installed with the update. Would you like to have both of these options when installing?

I agree it should definitely search for, download and install all patches at the same time as the initial download, and the install process should be done automatically as soon as the download has finished.

However, I still massively prefer it over the PS3 equivalent, where installing just about anything takes forever and you are physically incapable of performing any actions while doing so! The only time I've really noticed an impact with the PS4 way of doing things was when not all of the tracks had been downloaded for DriveClub, as they didn't start downloading until the game was started. As I said there should be a way for it to do all this automatically, so that if you start a download remotely after buying something while at work, it is there complete and ready for when you get home.

At the same time, if you've only just purchased the game direct from the console then I think it's a feature worth appreciating, the fact that you are able to start playing parts of the game while the rest downloads, as on the PS3 you'd have had to wait 5x as long before getting to the point of being able to play anything at all!

From 16/08/15 I’m going for sober for six months to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Donations can be made here and anything you can offer is greatly appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Butler5

Wish me luck!

I like that you can start playing it, but I don't get why updates don't come with a game install. I mean, I get with physical games, but I don't get it with digital games. How is it not already in the game. Two days ago, I downloaded Apotheon. Booted it up excited. Then I see "patch 1.01 available" in a notification. I'm just like "what the freak, why isn't this in the game already!?" So then I had to exit and get the update. There's no excuse for digital games, and physical should have an option.

There are a few things you can do to avoid this. Firstly: as soon as the game's icon appears on the menu, push Options, and select 'Check for Updates'. This means that any patches will download immediately, rather than when you first boot the game.

I like the way it installs the games while you play, the problem is that developers aren't doing a good using it. In Dying Light, for example, you do the prologue, and then when it's time to enter the open world, it wants to download/install the full game. In theory, though, I'm not sure why they couldn't have provided a smaller portion of the open world for you to play in while it downloads the rest.

DriveClub handles this better than any other game I've played. Basically, if you haven't downloaded/installed a particular vehicle or track yet, you can 'prioritise it', and it'll take like a minute or so to download the specific bit of content you want, before reverting to the whole game download again in the background.

Cheers getsammyb I will check for updates before I start a new game after install that will solve the update problem at least

Yeah, I always check for updates, massive pain. I just downloaded about 70 games on to my Vita and I went through everyone checking updates, ugh!
