@RogerRoger I have a strange relationship with RiME. When I’ve played it I quite like it, which is why I want to try to get its platinum. Yet it’s also equal parts frustrating and tedious. Perhaps that’s the point, I don’t know. The puzzles can be difficult, and the collectibles are by no means automatic.
The trophy list seems fine, without anything impossible, but does appear to require diligence with searching every nook and cranny. So that, along with my tepid response to the core gameplay and my lack of time to commit this season, has me playing through it quite slowly.
I think subconsciously that part of me is trying to keep the platinum as a realistic goal so that in case the game doesn’t wow me by the end, at least I’ll have a shiny virtual trinket to add to the collection despite any disappointment with the actual game’s conclusion.

@RogerRoger I do think RiME is a game that very much depends on one’s state of mind in order to click. I guess most games do, but especially artistic or emotional ones. So any reports of my enjoyment (or lack thereof) with the game are more than likely a reflection of where I am mentally that day. When I’m pressed for time and burdened with stress I get irritated when I’m trying to solve an elusive clever puzzle or find my way in an open world with no map. When I’m chilled out and at peace with having a little more time to stop and smell the roses, I adore a game that has a quietness and lack of urgency to it. Unfortunately, lately I’ve spent more time in the former mindset rather than the latter.
Perhaps I should be playing Call of Duty or Street Fighter or something more straightforward. 😅

I've been playing Shadow of the Colossus almost non-stop (in my free time, anyway; obviously I wasn't neglecting vital daily activities) for days now. Getting my stamina to max was honestly the worst: it's pretty simple to eat fruit on a NG+2 playthrough and get max health, but the lizards are a pain to track down, and the stamina boosts they provide are almost imperceptible, so I took to playing the game over and over and over to get the necessary boosts. Probably 40+ fights with colossi after my normal and hard playthroughs. Incredibly tedious. I really think this game has a terrible trophy list, although at least it didn't make me track down all the stupid lizards like the PS3 version apparently did.
Cap that off with a tedious 10+ minute sequence where you sloooowly run across a bridge after a probably equally long tedious climbing sequence where falling means death. Ugh.
Anyway, I got it! Probably not worth the self abuse and repetitive gameplay, but I've always wanted to do everything in this game, and there ya go. Platinum trophy #21.
Excellent Effort @Ralizah Well Done!
It goes to show that Dedication is what you need.
SOtC is a lovely game and a unique experience but I agree with you that it has a horrible trophy list. It was one that I played through once or twice but had nowhere near the commitment required to attempt the platinum. Glad you managed to overcome your hurdles and got there in the end.
@Thrillo
Nice. Seems everyone who plays it loves that game, or at least it's story. How'd you find the trophy challenges, did most come naturally or did you have to go out of your way for it?
@Th3solution
Good to read your 2021 review and enjoyed your categories. I think I got plats for Control and GoW this year too but wasn't thinking they were among the toughest, well apart from that last Valkarie and that one boss fight (Tommasi? Maybe..)
No surprise that you both include Telltale games on the easiest plats, kind of feels like getting a trophy for watching a film or reading a book, though I guess that's what an interactive novel is. And yeah I have a few in my list too.
@Ralizah much congrats, I know you said you struggled to take much satisfaction from it due to the frustration… but these are definitely the ones that stick with us. No doubt I’ll be tagging you for advice when I attempt it.
@Ralizah Awesome work! Those sort of platinums are the most frustrating (but hopefully rewarding!) when there's so much effort for the last one or two compared to the rest of the trophy list; I'd rather finish with a 5% completion, like Naughty Dog games used to be, than 95%..
@Sorteddan GotG was fine for the platinum. There is one missable trophy which would require replaying a chunk of the game and the outfits can be well hidden away too. I had a guide open to use mainly as signposting for roughly where the outfits would be so I wouldn't have to replay loads of the game and without trying to spoil too much of it either. There are also some combat specific ones which mostly came up fairly naturally.
...And finally I got it...
Platinum #100
LEGO DC Super-Villains (PS4)
Pretty much what you expect from a Lego game. Enjoyable experience and quite rare for me to complete a PS+ game the month it was given. Also met the target of getting the hundred before the new year.
@RogerRoger
You were correct, it took me a bit longer than I had anticipated, the post-game collectables/challeges were more substantial than I had expected.
...
Now I can finally get around to playing PS5 after its been sat patiently waiting for me for last week of so. Happy Days!

@Ralizah Congrats on earning a tough platinum! I can totally appreciate the effort you put in there, those time trial and the stamina trophies are hard going, hence why I don’t have them 😀
@colonelkilgore
Well if you come anywhere near matching your achievements this year you will smash it. Aren't you now on about 40 for the current year?
If so that a 3.33 rate per month meaning the next 30 should take about 9 months
Yay maths!
“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
@Sorteddan I managed 38 so not far off. I won’t be hitting that many next year though as I have some mammoth (in terms of time-to-plat) games lined up. As it stands, I’m scheduled to get to around 95 by close of 2022… but I’m sure I can squeeze a few Telltale’s et al in to round it up 😉.
@Keith_Zissou
Thanks mate.
Yeah it's pretty good. If you've played any LEGO games before then you know the formula and it's pretty much as youd expect. Simple enough exploration, combat and puzzle solving. The main hub areas contain a lot more activities than I was expecting so there is enough to keep you busy for a while.
And characters, blimey I never knew DC had so many! There are around 200 to unlock, how many do you reckon you could name between you and your son before going in?? I probably wouldn't have got more than a couple of dozen!
Well as me and the Colonel were discussing recently, its about that time to look back over the previous 12 months of gaming and platinum chasing and so here is my retrospective:
2021 - Was it all plat?
Easiest: Oxenfree; The Last Campfire
Hardest: Enter the Gungeon; Sound Shapes; Dead Nation
Favorites: Disgaea 1 Complete; Jydge; Hellblade
Weirdest: Kentucky Route Zero
Most Underwhelming: Uncharted 4
Most Annoying: Hotshot Racing
Most Grindy: Middle Earth: Shadow of War
Blastiest from the Pastiest: Bioshock Remastered
and now I should probably stop before I invent categories for all the other games I platted this year...
Edit: Hotshot Racing I only found annoying due to need for online races when servers were pretty empty. The game itself wasn't annoying. It is superb.
@Sorteddan That's an impressive list of trophies. Enter the Gungeon, in particular, I recall having some really demanding trophy requirements.
Did you do Dead Nation in co-op?
Congrats on the milestone! That's a lot of platinums.
@colonelkilgore Getting the platinum was definitely satisfying overall, even if I found that one bugged colossus to be exhausting as hell. Definitely tag me if you end up going for the trophies yourself.
@Thrillho Yep. Despite not having returned to it for years, I still have Rayman Legends installed on my PS4's HDD because one day I intend to suck it up and start grinding online challenges again in order to get that last trophy I need.
I have kind of a love/hate relationship with trophy hunting, but, overall, I'm glad the system is there. And despite being more of a Nintendo person overall, it's getting me to actually repurchase some games on PS4 just for trophy collection purposes.
@render Thanks. Realistically, this game is best enjoyed as the cinematic five-to-six hour adventure epic it is on a first playthrough. Grinding the other 35 or so hours for the trophies kind of removes the game's mystique and makes its flaws harder to ignore. Although I don't regret doing it.
An interesting question that occurred to me just now: do you consider trophies to be an "extra" of sorts or a major part of the experience? Like, if a game has a truly wretched trophy list, would that be cause to rate it lower than if it had less aggravating trophies?
Currently Playing: Fields of Mistria (PC); Cookie Clicker (PC); Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC); Overboard! (PC)
@Ralizah
Enter the Gungeon could be harsh but I loved it, pretty much played it everyday for 3 months or so and was one of the first platinums I got this year.
Dead Nation needed at least one playthrough co-op for a trophy but had to do most of the tougher stuff solo. Grim mode campaign and getting to level 10 on Arcade were pretty testing.
And thanks. Yep it's taken a while but finally got the century.

@RogerRoger
Well I had to stay true to my nefarious roots, after all the game was for 'Super-Villains' so I chose the bad guys for my character 'Sorted Man' (which I thought funny at least!)
“We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
Getting a million lums and the top level of awesomeness were just utterly pointless, and having no friends how had played the game meant I couldn't get either of those trophies either.
If you need someone to lowball some scores for you, I'd be more than happy to help!
@Thrillho I'm OK. Getting good online scores isn't the problem. Doing the challenges for months on end is the real challenge. If I just made a habit of playing the online challenges for a few minutes every morning, I'd have had the plat years ago, but I suck at that sort of thing.
Million lums is actually not that bad if you do everything in the game. It's that darn Awesomeness lvl 11 trophy. SO annoying.
@RogerRoger Thanks. I don't think I'd have had the fortitude to platinum the PS3 version. Even hunting the few lizards I did was painful. Going for all of them... well...

@Ralizah It’s a good question regarding trophy lists. I tend to only attempt to platinum games that I’ve really enjoyed, usually to get that little bit more play out of the game. I love to find stuff out by myself if I can so I do prefer to go into games blind. Because of that I only look at the trophy list after the first play through, which is sometimes good sometimes bad as it can mean having to do a whole other play through especially on linear games. It means you can just enjoy the game for what it is first and for most and then decide if it’s worth going back for the trophies.
If I’ve really enjoyed a game it does make me feel disappointed if I find out it’s got an overly arduous trophy list, but I definitely wouldn’t think less of the game for it. It might make me feel different about a game if I had to grind to the point of not enjoying the gameplay any more though, similar to your experience with SotC, which is pretty much why I parked it where I did.
On the flip side of that though I love it when I find out that I didn’t quite finish off all the trophies for something that I fancy revisiting as it gives me more of a reason to jump back in.
