Sony says: "Press and hold the PS button for at least 1 second, and then select [Turn Off PS4] on the screen that is displayed."
I say: "Push the Off button."
@kyleforrester87: Consider that I bought a used PS4, no box or manuals with it: once at home I plugged it to the wall and put the pad to charge via USB. Then I unintentionally turned on the console while cleaning it, no idea of what was happening... It took me some minutes to realize it had those buttons!
@andreoni79: Don't feel to bad. I bought a brand new PS4 on launch day and didn't know there was an actual power button or eject button on the system itself. I didn't discover it until a week after I bought it when I was wiping dust off of it when all of a sudden the disc came out the system turned on lol. Till then I just used the controller to turn it off and on, which I still do btw.
That's another thing, do you guys leave a disc in the PS4 (if you are using discs) when you power it off or do you remove the disc after every play session.

@kyleforrester87: Yes I do. On my old pc from 2001 it only broke last year - I had 14 processes working at any one time. That's it!!! Your PC will probably be running 150 just after logging on. I'm a bit ocd about running things, saving and closing down stuff properly.
But yes I close down each application when I'm not using them.

I always leave discs inside consoles, I can't see what can possibly go wrong doing that. I've only seen the Fallout 4 disc when I took it off from its case five weeks ago!
I'd like to ask something here instead of opening another topic: what about that slight noise coming from the console when it's off? I bet it's the internal power supply, right?
@themcnoisy: Well exactly, you couldn't close all the background processes even if you wanted to so of course the shut down procedure has to deal with all of those safely so there is no reason it cannot handle a few extra applications being open. Even if you close the game you're playing there are plenty of background apps running that it'll need to shut down. Wouldn't worry about it. Not even sure it's that much of a problem to pull a cartridge out of a Megadrive without turning it off lol.
@Tasuki: I just leave it in. I can't see what harm it will do and I often want to play the same game the next time I play on my PS4, so it's more convenient to leave it in.
@kyleforrester87: Thanks man, that's all the reassurance I need.
@andreoni79: There was an issue earlier in the year funny you should mention it. The PS4 would brick if a disc was left inside it. On boot up it would try to read from the disc at an early point in the bootup. The system would just stop completely. That's been sorted with a patch and only affected a few hundred machines.

@themcnoisy: Didn't know about that! Glad I bought it in July then. Even my PSX still works after almost 20 years (but only upside down!) and it would be crazy to a have a PS4 one bricked by... a game disc!
I'm sad to say I don't have any of my old PlayStations. I could probably get my hands on my PS1 and PS2 as they should be back with my parents. At least most of my games are safely with me. My PS3 died in 2014. As much as I love my PS4 I'm not terribley convinced by its build quality and combined with how much use it gets I wouldn't be surprised if it bites the dust before it's made redundant. I guess I wouldn't be too upset by the prospect of having to buy another if needed.
@themcnoisy: I never heard of that let alone happen to me and I always leave my discs in. Of course as I said earlier I as put mine in rest mode so that could I guess have happened from a complete shut off.

I do leave my discs inside. I usually play the same game until I beat it. I love how the Wii U even has a white light that tells you if a disc is in when the console is off.
What I don't know if can be done (it could be done on PS3) is to see the battery level on a controller or if the console is charging a controller after plugging it in. Only way of seeing the battery level is to press the PS button on each controller and getting the prompt of "Who is using this controller?"
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.
I leave the disc in the PS4 when I shut down and like I stated earlier, I just hold the PS button down and power off completely at the end of a session without 'quitting' the app first although I do exit to a menu screen just in case in loses any progress.
I don't close down apps (like firefox, thunderbird AVG etc) when I power down my Laptop either. It always closes them own during the process of shutting down - same as my PS4

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
@andreoni79: Only just noticed your picture when looking at @Bamozzy and @sinalefa comments. Haha - I think we all made that mistake with the power button. In fact I had no idea where the discs went to be honest.

I could not even find the on/off button when I got my PS4 I did not realise it had one until I google it. Its the best hidden button on any device I have.
