The Witness is coming on January 26, in exactly a month, so I thought this would be the perfect time to start a thread about the game. A mysterious puzzle adventure game set on a desolate island that is very reminiscent of games like Myst. It looks absolutely stunning. I've been following their developer's blog for while, and it's looking pretty good. The game is said to have more than 650 puzzles, with over 80 hours of content.

I can't wait for this game to arrive next month. Anyone else excited for this as well?

Apparently some of the puzzles are stupidly hard and most players will not be able to complete them. I really do not like the game developer and some of his views so will give this one a miss.

I hope it's hard, Braid had me totally stumped staring at the screen for ages at points, but I got all the pieces without guides in the end. The stars are another story!! Fez is even harder in places (some puzzles apparently remain unsolved) so yeah - hard please! If anything it gets the community trying to figure out solutions, which I like.

@dryrain: I'm not too familar with the developers. I've read their blog and some interviews. Although their opinions seems to be not too mainstream, I don't think I can disagree with them. Anyway, in the end, it shouldn't matter who developed the game. If the game is good, it's good; if it's bad, it's bad. Besides, I think the gaming industry is severely lacking puzzle games, so a puzzle game of this scope will always be welcome. I liked what I've seen so far, so hopefully I'll enjoy the game as well.

@kyleforrester87: Oh Fez.. I don't think The Witness will be that cryptic. I wouldn't mind it, one of two puzzles that takes an entire community to solve.. From what I've seen they're quite keen on getting the player familar with their puzzles. So, I'm not sure if some will be seemingly impossible.

@belmont: Yeah, Myst was what I thought of when I first saw the game. I loved that game when I was younger, I don't think I ever beat it, maybe I should give it a try again.

Yeah I wouldn't expect it to be as cryptic as Fez. As I mentioned Braid was achievable for me without guides, but there were secret stars that were very complicated to get.

The developer (Jonathan Blow, is that his name?) seems okay in the interviews I've seen.

@kyleforrester87: I haven't played Braid, so I have no idea how difficult the puzzles were, or if that game is even comparable to The Witness, it's been quite a while after all since the release of Braid. I think it's safe to say that the game isn't going to be too easy.

I am seriously looking forward to playing this finally. I think Braid is one of the best games ever made. The way it told its story through melding gameplay mechanics and player expectation of how a game works was genius. As I understand it, they've been through quite a lot of hardship to get this done and I'll be getting it day one. Bring it on!

There was a game idea here. It's gone now.

I don't care, I can still play it on PS4. This could also mean more revenue for Blow to continue making games. I think I read something about him dumping all the cash he had into The Witness, so financially this makes sense.

The more the merrier, hope it does well on both consoles. If its a good game, that is!

Blow just posted to Twitter "There are no plans right now for an XB1 version of The Witness. We just put that on the rating form so if we ever do XB1, we won't have to get the game re-rated. (Provided the content is the same, which it would be)."

@Swiket: More than I expected. Oh well, if the game lasts as long as they promised, I'm fine with that price.

Price sounds right for the promised content. Plus it gets some leeway based off of Braid.

I'm not surprised by the price tbh. Blow has been critical of developers who undervalue their games, and this is supposedly a 70+ hour game that's been in development for 7 years.

It's funny, back in 2008 a lot of people thought $15 was too much for an XBLA game like Braid. Now it's the standard.

Not saying I disagree with the price, but development time shouldn't be a measure for price.

It's out tomorrow, very much looking forward to it! As far as I'm aware the review embargo lifts at about 3pm GMT today - what do people expect critics will make of The Witness?
