Got a proper sesh in on Zombie Army Trilogy today and loved every minute fair play. The level design really picks up after the first couple of missions and it’s a proper challenge too. Got a good bit of co-op in too with @CaptD and @Render (and one of our other mates who isn’t on Push Square)… brilliant game in co-op, much like its sequel.
@graymamba@Render
Yeah good fun until I’m shouting “MEDIC!”.
I’ve just seen that a gun/skins dlc pack for SE Resistance is currently free....now we just play the waiting game for the rest of it.
Just started Mass Effect 2 from the Legendary Collection and it’s feeling pretty good already tbh. I remember very little from back when I originally played the 360 version at release and the introduction has done little to bring back any memories… but it’s a strong opening nonetheless. I remember feeling a little underwhelmed when I replayed the first game a couple of years back but the whole Illusive Man-filled opening is great fair play.
@graymamba Ah, nice! I was actually browsing my trophy list yesterday (not sure why but I got curious about something and just kept scrolling, but more on that later) and when I came across my Mass Effect Legendary trophy list it really prompted me that I need to get back to my efforts to replay the other two games. Part of me was wondering if they would still hold up, because when I played the first game a couple years ago, like you I was a smidge underwhelmed, despite liking it fine. It just wasn’t the gaming revelation that I wanted. I think ME2 has aged better though so I look forward to your impressions.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Th3solution yeah I was a bit put off continuing with the collection after playing the first myself. In fact, I had planned to play 2 last year and 3 this… but between my apathy following the original and my drive to get as much of my ps3 backlog done as possible, I delayed it a year.
It’s obviously been a while but my immediate thoughts are that it looks a fair bit more crisp, controls noticeably sharper and the narrative is already more intriguing. I wasn’t that excited to be starting it this afternoon but am already feeling good about it, so you may well feel similarly when you get around to giving it a go.
@Th3solution had a proper day-long sesh on Mass Effect 2 and had a great time fair play.
There is of course a chance that I’m just far more in the right mood for this kinda thing than I was back when I played 1 but the difference in my reaction seems too distinct for that to be the whole story.
Don’t get me wrong, the action is aging compared to the games of today but does still seem noticeably better than I remember from the original… but the big thing is the narrative, which is on another level. I’m fully invested rn and am a little bit blown away by how it’s gripped me tbh. It’s a lot darker than 1 in tone and reminds me of the latter seasons of Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 (two of my favourite tv shows as a teen, that did a lot for altering modern sci-fi in terms of a darker tone and shades of grey in resolutions). Cant wait to get back to it tbh 😅.
@graymamba Happy to hear you finally caught the Mass Effect bug! It remains one of my favourite gaming experiences of all time, if not still my favourite. I enjoy the first one a lot more than you seem to have and find 2 the weaker link in the series, but it does introduce a galore of fantastic characters who I have no doubt you will fall in love with as you continue playing! Do you have any clue about the final mission of ME2 through cultural osmosis or are you going in rather blind?
@Tjuz so funnily enough, I did actually play through 1, 2 and much of 3 back when they originally released… but I have no recollection of the ending of 2 for some reason. Probably a good thing as I get to enjoy it all over again with fresh eyes… a rare gift to be sure.
Can’t remember why I didn’t actually finish of the third game. Don’t know if I just wasn’t feeling it or if something else released that I wanted to play and then just didn’t go back. So, I’m really interested to see how the trilogy is concluded. I have heard it was controversial but have no more information than that. Writing a satisfactory ending to a trilogy is a very difficult and rare accomplishment, so no shame if they didn’t quite pull it off… 🤞 that they did though 😉
@graymamba Oh, the joys of forgetting Mass Effect and playing them all again like it's the first time! I'm almost jealous. I would assume you simply were pre-occupied while playing the third one, as it has a bunch of fantastic narrative arcs that I'd be shocked you wouldn't have enjoyed or wanted to see the conclusion of if you got that far into the trilogy! Excited to hear more of your thoughts as you go on.
@Tjuz I smoked copious amounts of weed in my former life and as a result, theres just a massive haze in regards to games, films and tv that I consumed from my mid-twenties to my mid-thirties (unless I played/watched things multiple times that is). Definitely a blessing.
I only played it on PS3 with the interactive intro so I never played ME1 until the remakes (and that one reeeaaally shows its age).
Getting the platinum for ME2 back in the day with the veteran play through was bloody hard. Some of the best characters in any series though in that second game and the DLC is great; the Arrival DLC leads into ME3 brilliantly.
ME3 is one of the only games I ever bought the special/collection edition for and is a fantastic game too.
@graymamba Like @Tjuz, I am also a huge Mass Effect fan! I consider it my favourite sci-fi property across games, movies, books and TV and I own an embarrassing amount of Mass Effect stuff (including, but not limited to, a shower curtain and a duvet/comforter).
Happy to have you (back) on board the Normandy!
(and regarding the ending(s) to 3, I didn't think it was half as bad as everyone was making it out to be, but it did feel sort of "abrupt", even though the entirety of 3 could be considered the ending . The extended version of the endings did feel more satisfying as a whole, though.)
@FuriousMachine I do think that the overall ending is clever if you take it from the perspective that every decision has been futile… but it very much feels more like a cop out to make something work for the vast array of choices that could have been made beforehand.
@Thrillho@FuriousMachine it really is very good. Just finishing off all the loyalty missions atm before finishing off the main campaign. Amazed that it’s never been adapted to film, as seems a perfect fit.
Also, what are your thoughts on Andromeda… worth playing, once the trilogy is all done?
@graymamba There has recently been some movement on the Amazon TV show; they just hired a showrunner. I'm not all that optimistic, though. While there is no info on whether they will directly adapt the games or if they will simply tell stories set in the universe, I think adapting Shepard's story would be a mistake. There are too many variations of that story out there in gamers' minds and managing a satisfying adaptation is a fool's errand. Personally, I think telling stories with new characters is the way to go, maybe having cameos from characters from the game (though Shepard should only be mentioned and in a gender neutral way). Additionally, making it animated would give them more freedom pr. budget dollar than doing live-action, so that would be preferable as well (expensive shows gets cancelled really quickly).
As for Andromeda, it is without a doubt the absolute weakest in the series and a bit of a disappointment in comparison, but with managed expectations I would still recommend it. I enjoyed it quite a bit and it does contain quite a few interesting characters and I wish they would have been able to move forward with the story (the overall setting has a lot of potential). So, if you still feel hungry for more Mass Effect when you're done with the trilogy, I would absolutely recommend giving it a go.
@JohnnyShoulder Absolutely! There is so much awesome lore in those games that, done right, a TV show is rife with possibilities! I fully expect them to fumble it, though, and deliver a Shepard story that appeals to only a handful of ME stalwarts who made similar choices in their playthrough (hopefully it will be well enough produced to garner new fans, though).
@graymamba I never played Andromeda as it always sounded a bit of a mess. I think is was @LtSarge who played it a while ago (probably like four or five years ago now but that’s still “recently” right?) and enjoyed it. But knowing that they’ve given up on that world now puts me off further.
