Topic: Why all the hype for Fallout 4?

@MitchVogel: They don't compare. Without sounding like a d*ck, the Fallout series has more of a story to follow compared to that of Destiny. I'd say they are two completely different games.
Want to compare? Take a look at the Witcher 3. 😀

@ZeD: That's interesting. I think I'll pass on Fallout then, I didn't like Witcher 3 all that much. My problem with it was that it felt too unfocused; there was so much to do that it all just felt like busywork.

Fallout is similar in essence to other Bethesda RPG's. The difference is primarily the era and setting. Oblivion and Skyrim are set in a 'Sword and Sorcery' fantasy world. where as Fallout is set in a Post-apocalyptic with guns fantasy world. For me the Witcher 3, although set in a similar Sword and Sorcery world to some Bethesda games, had much more of a focus on the story. I guess Bethesda games do have an underlying story but get lost under all the side quests, exploration etc. I know the Witcher 3 has a lot of these too but I never lost track of the main story.

Its really nothing like Destiny. Destiny is more of an MMO without the number of online players in an area. Its rare you will see more than 4-5 others in most places apart from the social tower. Destiny also has more 'structure' to it compared to Fallout. Once you get outside of the Vault, you are free to do what you want and go anywhere - although some areas are very dangerous if you haven't got the necessary skills upgraded and weaponry too. Destiny requires you to play through the Story to unlock new areas, strikes and even the Raids too. You can't go straight to the 'moon' for example without completing the earth based missions, you can't go on patrol immediately in each area until you have done at least the first mission. I guess Destiny's 'story' is subjective - there is one although the way its presented in game is weak with the majority of lore hidden away on Bungies site via Grimoire. The missions themselves are also very similar in that you battle your way to a 'boss' or a few waves of enemies - like mini strikes - with few cut-scenes but this makes them better for the end game 'daily mission' but doesn't help with the Story. Destiny is more designed around social gaming too. Fallout is very much a Single Player experience with more varied missions and side quests - often bizarre and has its unique brand of humour too. Its not a game you can pick up and play for up-to an hour and feel like you have got somewhere. Its not really the game you pick up and play in short scattered bursts but one of those that eats away hours for many days. Its unlike Destiny in the fact you can not play for a few months, pick it back up and carry on from where you left off easily. Its the type of game that's best played when you don't have much else on your schedule for a few months.
From my point of view, I won't be getting Fallout 4 this side of Christmas. I have a few new releases in November to play (CoD:BO3, Rise of the Tomb Raider and SW:BF) as well as a few games in my Backlog (Uncharted collection). Its the type of game I would buy during a very quiet release window because of the time it eats up.
If you don't like unfocussed stories and easily get lost by all the side quests etc, then Fallout maybe isn't for you

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

why the hype for any game?

now as for fallout i agree with you, i played fallout 3 and found it dull but others obviously loved it although for the life of me i don't know why

Still "To Each Their Own" i suppose

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"

"Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

@mateq: Just like a lot of fans of ff6 moaned about ff7. To be fair I only mentioned it as it was brought up and thought it was a good analogy.

I think a big thing about the fallout games is you are always progressing. A little bit of map here, a skill there, a perk, a new piece of armour, hardly any health, a safe, a new weapon etc etc it constantly drip feeds you. The setting is cool too - especially the destroyed 50s theme.

There was a good article on this very site about that, how many modern titles lack a good story and cohesion throughout the game. You might like something like Uncharted then.

I'm just curious what the differences are between PS4 and XOne versions.

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

The only difference is the fact that the XB1 version comes with Fallout 3 (via backwards compatibility) - not sure if this is just a pre-order bonus or not though! The only other difference is that at E3 it was announced that some PC mods will come to the Xbox. It has been mentioned subsequently that Bethesda also hope to bring these eventually to PS4 too...
