Topic: Why I think God of War 3: Remastered is happening

Disclaimer: What I'm about to say is pure speculation, gleaned from various news articles over the past year and information from supposed "industry insiders" so take this with a pinch of salt.
As many of you are aware, this time last year a significant amount of Sony Santa Monica's workforce was laid off resulting (but never confirmed by Sony) in the cancellation of a new IP project for PS4. This would have put the studio in a very tricky position because now they were far behind most of Sony's other studios in making games for PS4. While projects with indie developers and ports of games like Journey continue to happen, in terms of a AAA game there were problems.
4 months later it was announced that Cory Barlog (director of GOW 2) was returning to the studio to helm a new project which will allow him to choose his own team. My guess here is that Sony got in touch with him and basically gave him full control over whatever he wanted to do because Sony needed a new project off the ground from SSM quickly. But AAA development takes time, which is why I wouldn't expect this game to release till late 2016 or early 2017. So what's SSM going to do in that time to assuage consumers and possibly shareholders? Remaster God of War 3 of course, this been the franchise's 10th anniversary it makes perfect sense. So why not Ascension too, might well be that there isn't enough people to do both games at the studio plus the cost of new servers for it's multiplayer may have played a part too. Like I say this speculation but I would like to hear your thoughts.

I think God of War III Remastered would have happened regardless of the cancellation of Stig's project, but I do think you're right in saying that developers are using these re-releases as a means to pad out the release schedule.

God of War is a big, big franchise, and I think Cory Barlog's been brought back to 'reboot' it so to speak. God of War III Remastered should keep the brand in the spotlight while it prepares to announce the next game. I personally think that it'll be teased at E3.

I'm not sure GoW is as big as all that. I actually think people are sick of the combat in that game, I know I am. I really enjoyed GoW 3, but by the end I was done. I've never touched Ascension and don't plan to. Unless they completely overhaul the way that game plays, I'm just not interested. How many times can pressing square, square, triangle be fun? Especially when there's far better games out there in that genre! Even at the time when I played GoW 3 I was like "well this feels like a step back after Bayonetta..."

I've never been a fan of this series but your last sentence sums it all up for me. It's always felt like it's behind other series, especially Bayonetta. Honestly think GOW needs a good few years away (mid 2017 at the very earliest) so they can come up with something much better than the last few. The original was good at the time and three was okay but the rest have been very underwhelming, especially the last one. A change of setting could spark some life into it perhaps, maybe even get rid of Kratos who is just generic teenage boy image of what a video game character should look like. Just a view from outside the fanbase.

I don't know GoW is one of Sony's biggest IP's, very often in forums I've read from many how they had a 360 last gen so they missed out on things like GoW and Uncharted. In the sub genre of the "spectacle fighter" GoW is probably the most popular because people loved it's memorable boss fights and epic set pieces.

Much as I've really enjoyed the GoW games I've played (all but 3 and Ascension), it's not like it's the only game out there with "spectacle". At the end of Bayonetta you ride a motorbike up a launching rocket before a boss fight that ends with you punching god into the sun with a gigantic fist of magic hair. None of the GoW that I have played so far have been as distinctive and memorable as that!

From 16/08/15 I’m going for sober for six months to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Donations can be made here and anything you can offer is greatly appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Butler5

Wish me luck!

I didn't say Bayonetta didn't have it's moments but when people remember standout moments they remember the Hydra fight or the colossus of rhodes or the entire beginning to 3. Largely this is down to more people have played GOW then Bayonetta.
