Wanted to start a thread for this hopefully fantastic game. My hype for this is building and opened a chat for anyone else interested . I just pre-ordered the deluxe edition, not so much for what I get, but more of a thank you Capcom for making another Dragons Dogma. What is everyone hoping for in this game? What class are thinking of going with?
It's been a while since I played it, so I can't remember the specific vocation names, but I was playing a raw, offensive sorcerer. It was rough until roughly half way in but then...My God was that fun. Waiting for the right moment, looking for a good spot and then casting a 15 second spell that turns a chimera into dust within a few seconds. My first instinct for DD2 is to do exactly that again, just probably way cooler. Then again, I'll most likely play this multiple times and go for a warrior with a badass greatsword on my 2nd playthrough.
@dschons I was leaning sorcerer as well. I don't recall what I played in the original. I do remember following lemoneatingcows guide and that it was quite good. I remember save scumming to get a rare random early flaming knife or sword. That is about it through lol. I just remember how fantastic and unique everything was. Besides sorcerer the mystic spearhand class sounds interesting.
I’ve preordered the game, but I never played the first one. To be honest I’m a bit nervous about playing it. It seems pretty complicated with everything going on in combat. I think I’ll play as an archer and just hang back letting arrows fly lol
@Kyushutrail the first game is one of my favorites from PS3, but it’s been so long since it came out, I doubt that it will be essential to have played it before this new one. I’ve completely forgotten what the specific gameplay inputs were and have mostly forgotten the storyline (which was admittedly weak and not a key strength of the first game anyways)
But if I recall correctly, the combat isn’t any more complex than your average action rpg. The various classes add depth, but as these things go, you’ll end up gravitating to your class and its specific abilities.
The pawns are AI controlled, so you only control your character, and you just try to select pawns that will balance and complement your character’s abilities. (So using a melee focused pawn if you’re going to be ranged, magic focused if you’re going to be physical, etc)
Of course, like I said, it’s been so long that i might be misremembering! 😅
For me, I’m excited to play this but my backlog is large enough I don’t think I’ll be able to get to it yet. If reviews and impressions are really positive then I might be persuaded though!

Those that are making characters, do wrinkles show up for you? The slider doesn't do anything for me. I am making the white haired old master wizard, but so far he is the white haired young apprentice.
@SJH thank you! I chose the wrong one. One has the wrinkles built in on tab 5. Now my old man mage Elodin Windfly can save the world through pure wisdom, stubbornness, and a bit of forgetfulness.
I've gone and downloaded the character creator just to see what's what. I feel like if I make a character I like I might be more inclined to try the game out.
Still probably need some convincing, so fans of the series please put my mind at rest that the fact the world looks like 90% plain rock in some alpha build environment, that this game will definitely make me see past that and enjoy it. (I'm hoping it's just a trailer thing I've noticed and in game there will be cities and towns and changes in environment)
Update: Esteemed character actress Margo Martindale now has me wanting to pre order 😂😂
@Elodin any tips for making pawns or best skills to combine in a party? 😁 i'm feeling like it is Baldur's Gate 3 all over again, and I'm already planning builds in case I do get this game early on 😅😅
I think I'd probably be some kind of pretty basic sword wielder for this (as I like to get involved in the action front lines in action games) although if there is builds that combine swords and magic in a way that is usable up close often then that would suit me perfectly.
I'm thinking a main pawn that combines the traits of both Astarion and Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy, sans pointy teeth, for a knife wielding theif that can zip around evasively for opportunity attacks and also handle the party healing in battle would be perfect.
I know a mage or wizard is usually the party healer in stuff like this, but I imagine they can also be made to be heavy artillery for some long range bombardments?
I've read that pawns can learn things, so you can have a healer in a non traditional role.
And I guess you have to share pawns with others, so have to look out for ones that suit filling up the other roles in your party?
Looking to hoover up any knowledge you can share 😂
@Ravix Glad your thinking of jumping into dd2. The most common pawn made is usually the opposite of your Main. So if you go sword and shield Ala fighter, a mage or archer is a good opposite. However like you said, you can round out your party from other people pawns as well. The only downside is the selection for the type of pawn you want may not be available at least to your specifications. I'm not sure how dd2 will do it exactly but it looks simular to the original. You may be able to look up pawns though. Will have to wait and see. Pawns can only be the main classes fighter, mage, thief, or archer. You can change your vocation(class) later once you find the right vocation master. It sounds like you would like mystic spearhand vocation. It is both magic and melee. Many are comparing it to jedi. That is actually the vocation I'm going to go for. I'm assuming it will take some fighter and some mage vocation to unlock. I'll be starting mage. I may go straight sorcerer though too lol. I keep flipping.
As for healing yes as far as I can tell the mage/sorcerer vocations have it again for sure, I'm not sure if any others do. They can have big boom spells as well as heal though.
I do recommend planning ahead when going out of town as far as provisions and such, as well as if you know you will be taking on a flying monster, archers and mages may make it a bit easier. The nice thing is you can always switch up your pawns based on your quests you are undergoing.
As for character/pawn creation, size does matter. I felt in the original the larger sized characters had an advantage. Smaller sized was more situational and the ability to carry more when large I felt was a better asset.
Hope some of this helps. Good luck! Can't wait to hear of everyone's adventures!
I absolutely intend to pick this up day one, but I don't think I will be playing it on PS5 cause of the framerate issues in previews. I'd rather play on PC where I have more control over my performance.
This is the design I made for my Pawn and my Arisen
@Elodin Giant muscley beastren mage as my main pawn to support my giant muscley human fighter. Got it 😂😂 there will be no loot too large 😁
My vision at the moment for my main character I'd use is some kind of middle ground between Olgierd Von Everec and some generic barrel chested salty brawler type who has spent some life at sea as a pirate/Viking type and just loves to fight anything. But mystic spearhand makes me think maybe a little more refined a fighter is the way to go, so that initial design choice might go out of the window 😆
I just tried out the dark arisen game (which basically looks like an old version of this new release in design and dragon cut scenes, weirdly lol) and quickly made a dagger wielding version of my BG3 character, just to see what it is like. When the game initially loaded I instantly threw my pawn off the cliff, just because haha. But when you end up in the fishing village, even though it looks absolutely ancient graphically, it has a mysterious vibe that makes me want to check it out more. Only problem is, I do feel a little inclined to just mess around (ala pawn off the cliff) and there is no hard saves, I don't think 😆 So I'd have to restrain myself in DD2, I feel. The grab mechanic is a joy, though and I do just want to smash and loot everything possible 😆😆😆
When it seems you're out of luck.

Is it wrong to maybe make some Pawn design decisions based on the fact that you think some people might want to use them a little bit more in their games if you do, thus gaining more bonus items/gifts for the designer of said pawns? 👀😂😁 the eyes closed is just too much 😆 but if it gets me some bonus loot, maybe worth it haha
As for my own character, I've adjusted it from being a completely brutish looking chap, softened some of my features, made it less of a giant, trimmed off the awesome big beard I was going to use for a more sculpted one, and now it looks like "i've seen some things, man" and I will have much more of an emotional tale to tell.
I think the best feature the creator has is the lighting modifier. Too many times in creators you make a character and then you start the game and you hair and skin is wildly different in the game world and you feel absolutely cheated. So they deserve some credit for that addition.
But on a lighter note, I've now seen people reference the "wolves hunt in packs" dialogue about 6 times on this site and now very mich get it 😁 I played a bit of Dark Arisen last night and heard it many a time on my random explorative journey, but especially when I went off the beaten path ignoring the snake head delivery quest, at night too I might add (I know it says don't do it, but we have to test these things out) all to find a woman who went to the witchwood. It was on this very path, in the darkness of night 😅 where I had to kill about 80 or 90 wolves to progress 20 yards 😂😂😂 it kind of felt like one of those 'don't go this way yet warnings' but I just powered through out of stubbornness, died once, then managed to get through the second time. It was absolute insanity 😁
The game definitely has a good RPG feel, which is what I was trying to gauge, and I can see why people fell in love with the series. A lot of it reminds me of Kingdom Come: Deliverance meets Skyrim, so I'm definitely hyped for trying DD2 properly now, even if I don't carry on with the older Dark Arisen.
Was there always this many endless waves of respawning/teleporting wolves though? 😅
When it seems you're out of luck.
