Hi guys and gals, it's Draco here, just hoping you can help me make up my mind about getting Demon's Souls by either adding or subtracting from my list of pros and cons for getting the game. I have pasted them from a word document below, at the moment there is one more pro to getting the game than cons, but that isn't enough to sway me into buying it.
Based on what I have written, and your own thoughts on the game, do you think I should get it or not?
Thanks in advance for your feedback, guys and gals!
Demon's Souls Remake Pros & Cons
Pros
A new game to play that I think I would probably enjoy
It's a Souls game (kind of - made by Bluepoint and not From Software)
Not much has changed (Gameplay resembles the classic title)
Enemies much easier than Ds3 or BB (balancing the lack of archstones for the most part in the game)
You can traverse a redesigned, remastered Valley of Defilement. (the best area in the original)
Cons
It lacks the "soul" of Souls games (some indefinable From Softwareian quality is missing in the gameplay footage I have seen)
Not much has changed - (it's not the same as Ds3 or BB in terms of combat)
Archstones as far apart as lamps in BB
Difficult to navigate the game compared to Dks1 & Dks3 (More bonfires in those games than in BB & DeS)
Edit: After watching some US game footage of people playing it, I've decided to get the game, but thanks to everyone who contributed on here, your thoughts really helped me make up my mind. @antdickens topic can be closed now, if you think that that's appropriate.
Whaaa!? My dude, this is the ORIGINAL Souls game, the very first that inspired all the rest. Without this game, there would be no Dark Souls or Bloodborne.
Oh, I see.
If you watch the latest state of play, they explain the game play, timings, etc remain identical to the original, they used the original code.
@LieutenantFatman I know, I saw that, I just didn't think it had the same feeling to it as the original game, the Dark Souls trilogy and Bloodborne. Something I couldn't put my finger on was lacking.

Yes, it's a difficult one. There is of course a world of difference between playing it yourself and watching a promotional video. But then you have to spend the money to know for sure. I'll definitely be getting it, just as soon as I can find a PS5 on sale.
Pro: It's about damn time more people got to play the genesis of the Souls series lol
Demon's Souls felt like such a no brainer for a remaster/remake especially in a post-Bloodborne world considering Sony owns that IP as well. Exposing the PS4 audience to SIE Japan and From Software's first crack at that formula has been a long time coming in my opinion.
PlayStation was always my preferred platform for this series squarely because no other platform has access to Demon's Souls and Bloodborne, and now I basically get to play the entire series on this one console thanks to this remake and BC with Bloodborne and the PS4 Dark Souls games.
I wouldn't say Demon's Souls is the best. I actually prefer Dark Souls II slightly over it, but I can't deny the impact its left on the landscape of the industry. It feels like a modern interpretation of classic old-school NES design mentalities present in titles like Castlevania, Mega Man and Contra.
@TheFrenchiestFry Never a good sign if you prefer Dark Souls 2. I replayed that recently and it falls squarely into the ‘not even good, even if I wish it was’ category. Hopefully the remake changes things then, although it seems mostly a graphical overhaul a bit like Shadow of the Colossus.
@nessisonett Honestly Demon's Souls is archaic as hell playing it on PS3. I hope the remake does enough to actually bring it closer in line with what's come since, but there are just a lot of little things that add up to how much I find it only okay instead of really good.
The Dirty Colossus fight shown off in the State of Play already looks like a step in the right direction considering this time there's actually a proper FOV where I can see stuff in front of me that doesn't feel so obscured as it did in the original.
@nessisonett Darks Souls 2 has it fair share of problems but is not a bad game by any means, just not up to the high standard of the other games in the series. I'm not sure how seriously I can take your opinion on this as you don't like the main game of Bloodborne! 😅
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@JohnnyShoulder Bloodborne’s not bad, I just don’t really like it. Nothing about it is bad per se, just a bit underwhelming and a load of annoying sections. I’d still replay it and it has a certain level of quality.
Dark Souls 2 has so, so many problems that it’s hard to say it’s good. Everything it does right is just lifted from the first game and everything it does badly is new for that game and thankfully didn’t come back for the third game. It suffers from having far too many bosses, diluting the good bosses with about 20 Pinwheel-level bosses. The health draining mechanic grates rather than adding anything. Majula is great but the route structure that it seems to share with Demon’s Souls makes the game too linear. The world in general doesn’t seem interconnected in the slightest and just goes from random place to random place. The estus flask taking time to heal you instead of being instant also is just a bloody annoyance that didn’t need to be added, increasing reliance on limited use healing items. Enemy groups are actively designed around them despawning after 10 kills, making some groups gank hell until you pick them off and grind them out until they’re gone. This is shown to horrific effect in Iron Keep, where about 20 knights track you around the entire map and the Shrine of Amana, with random projectiles following you around the map. I saw someone describe it once as Dark Souls 1 wants you to beat the game, it just provides obstacles on your path. Dark Souls 2 revels in how much it makes you die, leading it to just annoy you. It took the reputation of the first game and made a game that people who hadn’t played the series before had expected it to play like. It’s just plain bad and I played it through twice with the DLC. At least I’ve beated every boss and don’t need to play it ever again.
@Shigurui Honestly I don't think it's that simple. A lot of the original's problems could squarely be attributed to the PS3 hardware itself such as the frequent performance dips and lack of FOV in the Valley of Defilement, not to mention the opening boss in the original looking like a literal walking turd
If they can fine tune the presentation and preserve as much of the core gameplay as it had a great setup, while putting in QoL changes that bring it in line with subsequent Souls games, this could practically be considered a new game in of itself
@TheFrenchiestFry Interesting you view Sekiro as a Souls game. I'm playing it at the moment, and whilst it has similarities to Souls games I wouldn't go as far as to classify it as a Soulsborne game. It just has too many differences in its systems and overall feel of the game. I'd say it was a Souls-like, a bit like Hollow Knight or Nioh, and can't really compare it to the Souls games and Bloodborne
