I finally got the Platinum last night after needing just one glyph for about a week in Biome 6, doing a run per day! It simply wouldn't spawn, ever, and I must have completed the game at least 4 more times or quit just before the final boss. But yesterday, there it was up on a ledge! That gave me the Abyssal Scar Survey Trophy and with it, the Platinum.
What an amazing game! Even right up to yesterday, it was still giving me room configurations I had never seen before, and that's with around 60 hours of playtime! I've always been a fan of Housemarque, and consider Resogun and Nex Machina to be the finest twin-stick shooters ever made. But Returnal has changed the way I look at third person shooters and rogue-lites. I'm not sure anything will ever compare to it.
@katamariUK What are you going to do now, carry on playing or go onto something else? I'm glad I've still got the surveys to work towards as I'm still really loving it too, but after them I almost want them to add something else to the game as it's so good.
@phil_j I'm going to have to try the stacking out I think now that I'm free of the shackles of not gambling on things too much. Good tip.
@JigsawPieces Ooooh, I've been thinking about getting a Vita but wondered how much I would get out of it now that it's all being wound down. Perhaps that's a good enough reason π€
Don't know if anyone saw this but I noticed this was posted on discord, and goes to show that this game has been a success...
@render I'm gonna go ahead and guess it wasn't nearly as big a success as Ghost
But hopefully that's not just making it look good for the investors and they really consider it that
I can't say I know much about game budgets but with Returnal using an open source engine (and not one developed in-house) and not featuring a lot of performance capture, I'd imagine it was much smaller than most big Sony games, so it could have a good return rate despite not selling quite as well.
@render Thanks. I'm not sure whether I will keep playing Returnal. I do love it, but I've now played through every biome many, many times so may give it a break. I've kept it installed for now unless I need to make some room for something else.
As my backlog is pretty huge on PS4/PS5 and I also have a Series X with Game Pass, I don't have a shortage of things to play right now.
@Voltan Yeah I think it's definitely safe to say that it wouldn't be in the same sphere as Ghost as that did some really big numbers π.
I reckon you are right though, and that the budget for this game was a lot less than it would have been for other games requiring larger casts and lots of performance capture, and if they do consider it a success then hopefully that gives their strategy of taking a chance on new IPs some credibility and gives them impetus to keep partnering with developers like Housemarque to make something truly unique.
@Th3solution That's what's her face from Project Haven - Jade Raymond is it? I think she's a big deal but I'm probably a bit ignorant on the subject so I'm not sure what she's been involved in.
@Th3solution Looks like Haven doesn't have a logo yet so they used a picture of the person in charge instead. Jade Raymond is a well known game producer, now leading her own new studio.
@adrianthealchemist Good job!! It's impossible to predict how a run is going to go but sometimes you just get damn lucky. 5 is interesting though as you have to get all the keys and open the door in one run. Sounds like you are up to the job though π
@adrianthealchemist That one way trip to the yellow door is always there and you will have to make it, as it contains one of the keys. It might be a good idea to save that one for last though.
@JohnnyShoulder I feel ashamed. But donβt worry β I looked up her Wikipedia page and shall never fail to recognize her again. I have made a poster for the wall and everything. π
βWe cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.β
To be fair I would definitely not recognize Jade Raymond just from a picture but her forming Haven and creating a new exclusive IP for PlayStation as their first project was kind of big news
I did another run through the Crimson Wastes last night and didn't find a single thing I needed. I did unlock a few weapon traits though and I was having a good time until I decided to go to the citadel to carry on with the trait that I'd almost got unlocked. The drones descended and wiped me out. I was using the Coilspine Shredder and only had a Shockstream alt-fire which just doesn't seem compatible with those guys.
If I make no progress this weekend, I may have to drop off this temporarily as my enjoyment is beginning to sap from the game. I shouldn't have spend at least an hour to get max out my Integrity and my proficiency up high enough to tackle the enemies in the Citadel. Whether that is from some form of save states or some other way, I don't know, but I feel something needs to be done to balance the game a bit more.
