@Ravix Never underestimate the pulling power of salesman McColonelkilgore.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

Long-time lurker here but decided to chime in.
My reasons for joining the PS5 Pro camp are similar to the arguments @Ravix mentioned.

I don't think the presentation did Sony any favors due to YouTube compression and the already excellent state Sony's 1st party games are in on PS5. Sony would have to choose between showing 3rd party titles looking and running better on the Pro vs. showing the base versions in a bad light, so they opted for the good vs. better alternative with their own games. The price has been discussed already but all I want top add is that the system is not a mandatory update but rather an expensive luxury upgrade for enthusiasts. As I switched to digital-only shortly after buying my PS4 and due to habits formed by Steam the optional disc drive doesn't bother me: I can still watch my physical collection of movies on my PS4. PC gaming is also an option but it's rather expensive considering how quickly Nvidia cycles through GPU generations. Thus I'd like to provide some more background why I'm upgrading to the Pro as well.

I'm playing on a 27" 1440p PC monitor at typical office PC viewing distances, so image quality is important to me. I do not fuss much about 60 fps+ as long as the better-looking mode runs smoothly. A recurring trend I noticed is that especially UE5 games, which comprise the majority of upcoming third party titles, tend to run poorly on this console generation. Both performance and image quality take a hit and 60 fps is generally only possible if internal resolution is lowered significantly (as low as 720p).
The woes of FSR upscaling have been well documented already and PSSR's image quality looks to be closer to XESS, albeit not yet hitting DLSS levels of fidelity but it's the first iteration of Sony's hardware upscaler and the results are much more pleasing to the eye than the current solutions on consoles. I'm hoping to future-proof performance and quality of upcoming third party releases with the Pro and I'll gladly take the added bonuses to Sony's first party titles as well.

The final reason might sound silly but I'd be remiss not to mention it - ever since joining Sony's console ecosystem with the PS3 Slim I have been purchasing limited edition consoles. The PS5 was scarce for years and the released LEs didn't appeal to me so I had to be content with a regular white OG PS5. The 30th Anniversary LE Pro bundle finally gave me the opportunity to add another LE PS console to my collection, especially as I was contemplating to buy an Edge Controller since a year ago.

I'm also hoping, like most other Pro owners, that GTA VI will run at 60 fps on Pro but its's highly unlikely, hence I'm expecting at least rock-solid performance on 30 fps games without any hitches as seen on the base model in some demanding games.

Cheers, fellas!

Ok my question is why bother with the ps5 pro when you know Sony will release a ps6 which will have everything that the ps5 pro has and any new ps6 games. In all likelihood the ps6 will be released in the next 2-3 years anyways.

@Rodimusprime1313 Sony have already stated the PS5 is half way through its lifecycle and as it seems to be following what they did with the PS4/PS4 Pro you've still got a good 4 years of use if you were to buy a PS5 Pro now.

If you don't like it, don't play it, and shut yo damn mouth

@Rodimusprime1313 ok my question is why bother with anything when we live on a floating bit of rock in an infinite universe of nothingness? πŸ˜‚

Is it really hard to accept and understand that some people will buy a ps5 pro and use it for those years where a PS6 doesn't actually exist, and then also buy a PS6 when it releases? πŸ˜… it's not exactly an advanced concept and it's hardly a situation where if you buy a PS5 Pro you can't also buy a PS6 to upgrade again. It's also not mandatory, it's for those who want to and can afford to buy it.

Someone bought a third hand PS4 Pro this year for the same price I got it second hand. And consoles span many, many years for many different people. My PS5 Pro of today will probably be someone elses PS5 Pro in the future too. It's crazy, right? People buy things they want when they want them and when they have a use for them πŸ˜…

@ro-kurorai welcome. Step out of the Shadows and bask with us in that advanced ray tracing πŸ˜›

I still hold a small hope that with PSSR they will be able to fangle something with GTA6. I imagine Rockstar will rise to the challenge of providing something better on the better hardware. Regardless, it will no doubt run better and look better, so that will satisfy plenty of people.

Cool that you got the special edition. I had a quick punt at it after I saw the price was actually pretty reasonable compared to the standard, but it had gone by the time clicked it. I'm happy with the standard though, as I'm one of the few (apparently) that actually really likes the white and black console. I just wish it had an option to run with the blue light on, rather than it switching to white πŸ˜…

Like you, I think, I'm going in not just expecting x performance in every game, though. I'll still be selecting based on personal preferences on a game by game basis, especially if there's boosted graphic modes at smooth 30/40fps, VRR boosts, as well as the "fidelity performance" modes. Right now (on base ps5) for example, TLoUP1 performance mode actually runs really smooth and isn't jarring, but some games in 60fps are just woeful with image quality and the performance mode can genuinely ruin the feel of the game with absolutely weird motion in a lot of games I've played. TLoU is seamless in 70/80fps unlocked, 90% of other games look like someone sat on the remote and put it in fast forward πŸ˜…

@Ravix Thanks, mate!

Rockstar have always been pushing console hardware hard and their games cause people to upgrade to new console generations (I'm certain many PS4/XOne players will upgrade once it releases). If the GTA VI enhancements are substantial enough on the Pro Rockstar will essentially provide free marketing for Sony and I can even imagine a PS5 Pro + GTA VI bundle happening.

Sony will be releasing face plates for the Pro, so you can customize yours as you fit, mate

Have fun, fellas. Time to download all those PS5 Pro patches!

@Ravix @ro-kurorai I’ve heard that the Pro enhancement for Dragons Dogma 2 is surprisingly good, which is a CPU heavy game (as GTA VI will also be) so it’s a good sign.

Rockstar have always opted for 30 fps in their marquee open world titles as they push the CPU hard but I'll be happy if they offer locked 30 with better visuals on Pro. Let's keep our fingers crossed, though.

RE Village has been confirmed to run at 120fps on PS5 Pro, which will reduce 50% of motion clarity blur, make the controls snappier and more responsive thanks to the 10ms of latency getting slice down to 5ms, and the motion will be smoother and more life-like which is a match made in heaven for stuff like modern Resident Evil, DOOM Eternal(Although, the lack of gyro aiming hurts the experience by a land slide) and the like.

So this makes me wonder. if Village now runs at a whoppin' 120fps, what does that mean for the PS VR2 version? You'd think they'd get it up to 90fps now, which would eliminate motion doubling/duplication, reduce ghosting and again make the motion smoother and more life-like.

90fps is essential for VR for the first reason I stated. I know VR requires more juice to get games up and running compared to their console counter parts, but 90fps may in fact be doable. If not, i won't even bother revisiting it even if Capcom gets the game locked at a max/2000x2040 per eye.
