Topic: Thinking of upgrading my PS5 SSD or getting an external drive.

I'm tired of my PS5 always being too full everytime i try to install a new game. I have way more PS4 games than PS5 so i thought maybe I'll get an external for PS4 games so they won't have to be stored on the internal side and free up the space. Either that or i could just spend a pant load on a bigger internal SSD.

If i were to go the External route can i just use a spare Sata drive that i have or are those not compatible as an external?

Any advice on the best options would be appreciated.

Satas aren’t supported as far as I’m aware.
There’s PlayStation licensed SSDs if you’re interested.
I can’t get them where I live though, so I’ve went with Seagate.
They’re ok. I’ve ran into minimum problems.

@Truegamer79
I bought a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD with heatsink a while back as the same as you I was always monitoring the space available and having to delete stuff to install new things and it was getting me down. I was initially worried that I would lack the technical ability to install it properly but I can assure you it was so ridiculously easy and plenty of info, guides and vids online to watch before you attempt it. It is as easy as slotting it into place and using a screwdriver through!
Cost about £150 at the time and I haven't had to worry about space since then.
I would definitely recommend it if you've got the cash.

@Truegamer79 if you can afford it (they are a lot better priced now than they were at least) i'd go for the SSD regardless. You will be able to play your games from it just as fast, if not faster than the internal SSD too. The best thing about the ps5 is the load times so don't limit those with an HDD if possible.

I got some weird brand SSD close to when I got my original digital SSD, and it is both fast, and has had zero issues in the years I've had it. I've played multiple ps5 and ps4 games directly off the extra drive too, so you don't even need to manage space that much with transfers. Every so often I'll rearrange stuff, and that is it, I barely notice if I'm playing games from it any more, where initially i'd try to organise it so the PS5 games I'm currently playing were on the PS SSD with the occasional test directly from extra drive just to see if I could use it like that without heat issues (I actually think the PS5 runs better and cooler on the extra one, weirdly, but it does seem like it is in a better place than the built in one in terms of cooling, somehow)

Yeah i saw some 2TB SSDs on Amazon for 128 so I'll probably go for one of those.

Have had a External drive for PS4 games since day 1, it's a great cheaper option to get some extra space!

Just use a basic Sandisk 1TB external, the portable one
