Depends on the genre for me, really. If it is a single player narrative focused game I have no interest in sweating it out, that is going down to the lowest difficulty so I can just enjoy it frustration free. Looters and ARPGs, however, are built around you creating an ever stronger build and constantly increasing the difficulty to see how far you can push a game, and I very much play them in that way, too.
This is an apropos question for me at the moment since I’m mulling over how I want to approach Jedi Survivor. Do I want the more difficult Souls-like experience or do I want the chill narrative game experience? I could even do a harder difficulty and then use the accessibility features to slow time like that article was talking about. 🤔 I’ll probably just start out on the default settings.

I usually play on normal difficulty as I feel that's the more balanced approach and how the game was meant to be played. Occasionally I will play a game on easy if I just want to blast through the story too save time and clear a backlog. I feel my time is too precious too play on hard difficulties and spend time getting nowhere on a game, hence why I dont bother with soul like games
Depends on the game. In general, I tend to play on the hardest difficulty available - especially in games I am very familiar with. Some games I will play on 'normal' difficulty if I just want to focus more on Story and not be distracted by restarting from check-points and/or getting bogged down by the difficulty.
I don't always play on the Hardest Difficulty as these are locked behind completions. If the toughest difficulty only 'unlocks' after completion, I doubt I'll ever bother. If I have played a game, know the story etc, I am far less interested in playing it through 'again'.
As there isn't really a 'standard' for difficulty - normal for example isn't equally as difficult across ALL games, it really has to be assessed on a Game by Game basis. Also, you have different genres too and different levels of experience. In an RPG, you may need the 'best' gear and always assessing 'gear', modding/upgrading etc etc, but on easy mode, its less of an issue and don't get bogged down on 'stats' which can be 'off putting' if you don't really want to get bogged down and just want to have fun...
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
Yeah it depends on the game. In general I go for the highest difficulty, but I’m not great with FPS games so just go for normal.
You can also get past the difficulty curve by simply over-levelling in most games. The Witcher 3 on death march isn’t really that difficult if you just explore & level up.
Wolfenstein 2 on the hardest difficulty is still the most frustrating thing I ever did to get a platinum-never again. Whoever thought of that should be sent on a one way trip straight to the sun.

@Fight_Teza_Fight lol love how you say you’re not great at FPS games, then say you did Wolfenstein 2 on hardest difficulty. It’s got some of the most brutal difficulty spikes I can think of even on normal.
@kyleforrester87 I genuinely think I got worse at games as I got older. I could not do that now.
The spikes are ridiculous. I played through the mid & end level like a dozen times each. I’ve sworn of the franchise after that. No way I’m going to try & attempt Young Blood.

It depends, but usually normal. If I feel it's enhances the narrative, like with Vampyr (it direclty enhances the temptation of the main mechanics of the game) I'll play it on or maybe Attack on Titan since the show is so brutal, I'll put it up on hard or whatnot.
I'll also change it if I feel a game is too easy. Witcher 3 got way too easy, so I bumped it up. Same with Ghost of Tsushima. I also often increase difficulty if I happen to replay a game.
If I don't want to grind an RPG I might play easy because it's more normal challenge, just without tons of extra grinding.
I also often turn on little things that make a game harder. For example, in Resi games, I'll do a normal playthrough, but also turn off auto-reload add bit of subtle challenge and more intensity to the experience.
