Hi all.
Recently updated (I'm hesitant to say upgraded) from a PS4 Pro with SSD to a PS5 disc edition.
Apart from the totally unintuitive interface (themes, folders and long-press PS button please Sony!) I'm being totally baffled by the PS5's download ability (or lack of).
The Pro, like all PS4s, had a dedicated chip that dealt with all the background downloading of games, patches, OS updates and so on. I could regularly see the downloading of 3 or 4 patches occurring simultaneously at any one time.
I can only assume that the 5 has no such capability? It seems to be able to download one thing at a time with all other pending downloads set to a ''Queued' status (mmm, very PS3)? More irritating than that is the fact that when the PS5 has finished downloading the one item, it then doesn't seem to take the next item out of the 'Queued' status and download that - you have to go into the press PS button->Downloads section and give it a kick.
Am I missing something or has the PS5 taken a backwards step from the old stager?
That sounds odd. Yes it does do it one at a time, but it does it very quickly and then moves onto the next. I have a fast broadband but at times it seems to push beyond my limit running beyond my gigabyte internet norm.
However - I did find the wifi connection seems to be slower, certainly not wifi6, so maybe try using an ethernet and see if that improves it?
It is connected via a Ethernet cable, as was the PS4 Pro. The Pro regularly clocked 72-74MBps but the PS5 seems to be maxing out at 68MBps so far?
The transfer times do seem to be a little slower but it's the inability to carry on downloading that is the most irksome part. I was downloading Immortals: Fenyx Rising, the PS5 edition, and it even queued the DLC as the main application was downloading but then didn't download the DLC; all elements were stuck at 'Queued' and I had to manually intervene and tell each DLC to download.
Haven’t noticed queued up items not downloading but it does download one at at time. As long as you’re getting fast downloads doesn’t seem like to much of a compromise?
@trev666 I can sort of understand the inability to do anything while its moving games as it'll be encoding stuff as it moves the files.
It's definitely not as fast downloading as the SSD Pro - but the PS5's inability to download more than one thing at a time is just a baffling decision.
The PS4 Pro (with its dedicated chip like all PS4s) would download at least 4 things at once that I've seen whereas the PS5 plods its way through the download files one by one?
And as for the car crash of a UI, it's an infuriating situation - the long press of the PS button to bring up a context menu seems so much more straight forward than tap PS button, navigate to tiny game icon stuck at the top, press Options and then close game??
@sanderson72 I dont understand the inability to do anything while its moving games as xbox has been able to do that for the last 10 years on both xbox one and series consoles.
