With the annoncement of Netflix making a Witcher movie I started thinking, what good video game movies are there? It's a small list, at least for me. Tomb Raider was OK. I enjoyed Silent Hill, but it wasn't received well. Maybe Mortal Combat. There has to a good one that I am missing.

Mortal Kombat isn't a "good" movie. Actually, it's terrible. It's also a lot of fun, though. I rewatch it every few years, and enjoy myself every time.

I'd say Need for Speed is probably the best movie developed from a video game.

I'd have to go with Silent Hill which isn't necessarily an amazing movie but the rest is slim pickings really. I think that at least found a way of merging some of the iconography of the games into a relatively cohesive story.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

I quite enjoyed the Tomb Raider movies too. Hitman had a few good movies and the Resident Evil movies aren't terrible - some better than others. Final Fantasy: the Spirits Within was a good movie - well animated for its time. The Prince of Persia film was OK too. Warcraft wasn't that bad either. I don't think any of these were 'bad' as movies and stand up against others in the same genre. I guess they are not always 'good' when you are a fan of a game franchise and have certain expectation but as a film and compared to other films in that genre, they are not too bad.

@Tasuki Agreed. MK1 is campy fun, but the sequel was just bad.

I forgot about Warcraft. Being a huge fan of the series I thought it was done pretty well too. Yeah some changes to the lore bugged me a bit but overall I though it was good.

Now if we count Anime movies Street Fighter II: The Animated Move is good too. It had some cheesy parts but it was much better then the American Street Fighter movies. Another along the same lines that I thought was good was the Fatal Fury series.

Does the Riddick series count? I know they get blasted by movie buffs but I've enjoyed every one!

@ZurapiiYohane That is a good choice. I think the animated style being the same helped.
@themcnoisy I didn't know the Riddick series was based on a video game. I enjoyed the first and the animated version.

Mortal Kombat was an entertaining film...I went to see it for Christopher Lambert. Part 2 was horrible, but the first was made good with the comedy from Johnny Cage's character...even though to this day the graphics and visual effects didn't hold up well (Seriously, Goro was just plain horrible). Silent Hill was personally my favorite and was a good horror flick for anyone who also didn't know the game at all...again, the sequel (which wasn't completely horrible) didn't hold up to well, but the first is one that I can watch over and over again. Didn't see Need for Speed and didn't like the Tomb Raider flicks. Didn't see Assassin's Creed but knew it would be bad from the start. Ratchet and Clank wasn't too bad and the Angry Birds Movie was enjoyable for my kids...not for me, but my kids enjoyed it. The Super Mario Bros Movie...although was rated as horrible...was definitely entertaining and for some reason I can continue watching it, but I was also a John Leguizamo fan at the time.

One's that I'd like to see made, if they have the proper director, would be Uncharted (steven spielberg or James Cameron could do this one well), Castlevania (could be a good horror action flick) and the Rabbids would make a funny animated film...because for some reason I'm hooked on the Rabbids Invasion cartoon show and so is my wife and kids.

@themcnoisy The Riddick games were based on the movie - Pitch Black. Therefore they are more video games based on movies - much like Alien or Star Wars games. Escape from Butcher Bay is canon though as far as I am aware and a prequel to Pitch Black although Pitch Black was the first place we were introduced to 'Riddick'.

@BAMozzy oh yeah, I didn't realise pitch black was so old. It is Canon which is pretty amazing really!
