Final Fantasy XIV just went F2P up until level 60 and the end of Heavensward. Essentially an unlimited free trial that could theoretically last you months and months. I’ve been dabbling in XI over the last few months but might jump over to XIV now.

@nessisonett So, educate me on this - didn’t they try this before with FF14 being free? I’m really confused about that game. I’ve not ever been into MMOs so I have a general ignorance about how the genre goes, but I do have an appreciation for Final Fantasy and if there is one that I might try it would be FF14. The monthly fee has always scared me off. But seems like they already said you could play a version of it for free, but it was some kind of base version with limitations of some kind. So is that different now? Is it the full game experience, with access to all areas, all quests, all characters, all equipment, all online functions, etc just with a cap to your level? I don’t want to waste my time playing something that is just a hamstrung version or one that is basically a demo that is there just to prompt me to sign up for a subscription to see more.

@Th3solution It used to be up to level 20 which was a decent trial but not that long in the grand scheme of things. This trial essentially lets you do anything in the game up to the end of the first expansion, without paying a monthly fee. I couldn’t tell you anything that was locked, I’ve never come across anything you can’t do due to a trial.

@nessisonett anytime I've checked out a stream of it it was seems to be a party (FC?) going through it together. Is it pretty much a no no if you wanna do it alone?

ApostateMage

@BowTiesAreCool You can queue for all dungeons/raids and it'll put you in with other random players once all the roles have been matchmaked (tank/DPS/healer). I played through it solo but made a lot of friends on there. It's a very good community, at least it was when I was playing. Great game.

@BowTiesAreCool Yeah, pretty much what @ApostateMage said, the matchmaking isn’t bad and the community is so nice that it’s easy to make friends. It’s not unheard of to do things solo and the story is surprisingly amazing for an MMO so you can totally get into it.

Going on a Final Fantasy binge after finishing up Persona. I found my PSP 3000 I was gifted for my 8th birthday in 2010 along with my copies of Final Fantasy I, II and IV in addition to Crisis Core. I also managed to order Dissidia and FF Tactics from Amazon, while I'll probably order the JP physical version of FFIII on PSP (which comes with English text options from what I've heard) after I've gotten decently far into FFII

FFXVI's announcement has just given me every excuse to marathon the series properly for the first time, and a major convenience in that is that I bought literally every main entry released on Switch in addition to XIII and XV on Steam, and will probably jump straight into a new game of VII in the off chance I can't find FFVI Advance for a fair price online.

@TheFrenchiestFry Heads up, FFII is absolute garbage. It’s basically Star Wars with a dose of “stop hitting yourself” 😂😂

@nessisonett Oh I know lmao I played FF I, II and IV last when I was like 9 or 10

It and XIII-1 have been unanimously considered among the bottom of the barrel in terms of entries but at least it's better than Mystic Quest

@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah, Mythic Quest is the sort of game that makes you feel lowkey insulted while playing it. II and XIII are probably my least favourite ones as well although I never could get into VIII either. The only one I’ve got left to at least attempt to play is V but I have no clue which version I should be getting with that. Another heads up, III is brutally difficult, I had it on DS and it’s one of the most punishing and difficult RPGs I’ve played. It’s pretty good though.

@nessisonett I thought VIII was cool for what it was but unlike VII and IX it felt very much like a product of its time. It was probably the most "trying to be in with the 90s" kind of JRPG in terms of aesthetic that I've played from Square during that era. I can see why it's referred to as the black sheep of the numbered entries but it's a fine game regardless and I actually kinda like Squall as a protagonist

@TheFrenchiestFry It’s just the mechanics for me, especially the GF and junctioning stuff. Also the level scaling with enemies was strange. I totally appreciate that they went for something different but I’ve tried to play that game a few times now and I fall off around Disc 2 every time.

@nessisonett The GF and card systems are certainly different. I personally prefer just a straightforward ATB system like FFI-FFVII or FFIX without any specific frills but the idea of junctioning specific magic stock and creature summons kinda like a more concise version of the Materia system definitely was an interesting concept to say the least

I loved the easter eggs in FFIX. The weapons of previous protagonists was a great touch especially when you saw the Buster Sword and the Gunblade. I think Firion's weapons were also there which was dope even if you don't like FFII.

Thought I’d stick my thoughts on FFV here as I make some progress. Don’t know how many others here have played it but hopefully somebody, somewhere is interested!

So I’ve played just over 3 hours today and just finished North Mountain and went to Tycoon Castle. I’m really enjoying the combat and job systems so far, it’s very Bravely Default actually. I’m going in mostly blind so my tactics are probably stupid but better to learn than be told the optimal party makeup. I trained Monk on all 4 members until I learned Barehanded, which means I can deal solid damage on every class now, making training my mages much easier. It’s a great range of jobs already and it seems like there’s space for many more!

Oh, how I long for the Woolsey days. Clive is just like Terra being called Tina, they think it’s an exotic Western name when it’s like being called Brian. They should have given us a proper name in the West but no, translators have to be faithful these days.

I know the new protagonist is Clive Rosfield but all my brain wants to do is correct it to Claire Redfield lol
