@nessisonett Ah, good to know, I'll keep that in mind!
Also, I just tried out Vincent's level 1 limit break and the beast form's flare attack deals freaking 3600 damage! I'm definitely keeping this guy around lol, holy crap that's good.
...I just did exactly that lol. Luckily his form has other attacks so I managed to eventually defeat that boss. It definitely added an extra layer of challenge though
@nessisonett I just finished Mt. Nibel after being stuck in there forever! Had to look up how to even leave, lol. But that place seriously had a lot of cool stuff, including Sniper CR for Vincent. Holy crap, he went from being a pretty standard character to one of my favourite ones. I'm so glad that I recruited him, Deathblow + Sniper CR is so good. He does like 1000 damage every time now. I'm genuinely enjoying the game even more now that I'm trying out different stuff.
So I'm at what I think is a major moment of FF7: The internet has already spoiled it to me, but I know that Aerith is going to die soon so I just want to know, should I unequip the materia I have on her before this moment so that I don't lose them or is the game nice enough to return all of them automatically afterwards?
@Ralizah@nessisonett Thanks for all the help. I just wrapped up Temple of the Ancients and all my materia returned safely. I don't really care much about weapons/armour as the weapon is exclusive to the character anyway and I just equipped a fairly lousy armour before the boss fight so I didn't mind losing it.
Couldn't figure out how to avoid getting damage but it was still a fun boss fight and I also had the opportunity to summon Bahamut for the first time, which was awesome. I just love the summons in this game.
@Thrillho Well honestly, if this were like any of the previous FF games I've played, I probably would've given up on it a long time ago. But FF7 is just something else, I've never experienced such a phenomenal FF game before and I can't stop playing it. The gameplay is so much fun and the story is really engrossing. Sephiroth is easily the best FF villain ever.
@LtSarge Ahhh ok, I thought you were on the next dungeon. I’ll just say that you’ve got the one left in Disc 1 and you can beat that boss without one character taking any damage!
@LtSarge First time playing FF7, eh? I almost envy that. But it was pretty much the coolest thing ever back in the 90s! The Star Wars of JRPGs, so to speak, that really sold a generation of people on the possibilities of story-based gaming in the brave new 3D era.
The graphics are a little rough today, but, IMO, the lego effect the chunky character models give off is kinda cute. And I love how the game uses exaggerated body movements to convey personality, like actors in a silent film.
@nessisonett Oh okay, I'll keep it in mind for that one as well then!
@Ralizah Honestly, the fact that I'm playing through this series in order has made me appreciate FF7 a lot more than if I had played it as my first FF title, which is one of the few positive things of playing these games in order I guess! Because of this, I kinda get the feeling of how it must've been like to play it for the first time when it came out. It's just so different compared to previous FF games and while the 3D graphics are indeed very dated, they help you become much more immersed in the game than any FF title before. I don't know if I'm the only one like this, but I just don't really care that much about characters or story in a game where everything is in 2D. That's partially why I'm loving FF7 so much because the 3D graphics bring the world and its inhabitants to life.
Speaking of which, I think it would be very cool if Square Enix made an HD-2D remake of FF6, like they're doing with Dragon Quest 3. Even if it's still sprite-based, I think the 3D environments would help me become more immersed than the original FF6. Add in various quality of life improvements and I might give the game a proper chance this time.
@LtSarge I was about 10 when it came out I think and remember my friend having the game. Having grown up with a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) and games like Sonic and Streets of Rage, it was just mind blowing to have this vast, complex game. Imagine what leaving Midgar was like at that time!
The amazing thing is how nuanced and in depth the story still is today. There are still bits of the story I’m finding out now that I never realised despite completing the original game many times and the Remake three times.
@Thrillho I wholeheartedly agree. I get rarely impressed by older games as they just don't compare to today's more ambitious and sophisticated titles, but FF7 definitely has a very interesting story that still holds up well to this day. I think it's the primary reason why I've been so engrossed by this game compared to past FF titles.
@Thrillho I actually have a physical PS1 copy of the game that I bought years ago and saw that yesterday as I was going through my FF games. I genuinely can't imagine how anyone can play through this game without saving, lol.
Speaking of which, I also looked at the back cover of my copy and they literally have a picture that spoils one of the biggest twists in the game! Crazy how they could get away with that stuff in the 90s.
