I try to get more info about Game Advisor to this Store Manager and ends up being rude to me like I was asking the same question about applying for that position and asking for a job. I just wanted to find out more info on how Game Advisors get qualified for the position and he starts getting angry with me and getting an attitude with me.
I think a lot of those employees deal with a lot of 'harassment'. It seems like every time I'm in there, someone is arguing with them about a value of a game or belittling them for not being as knowledgeable as a customer.
That's not an excuse to be rude or anything, but I generally cut them a bit more slack. I imagine it this way, for us gaming is a hobby so we spend our free time playing games and reading about the industry. For them, it's a job to be around games all day and spew cooperate crap out all day to each customer they see. It's only logical that when they get home, they might not spend as much time with games as people like 'us'. A lot of the people I've known to work at Game Stop end up hating videos games extremely quickly.
If they weren't forced to try and sell subscriptions, dlc, pre-orders, and even credit cards, customers would likely be a lot more friendly and in return, the employees might be in a better working environment.

The nerve of some people.... :/
For the uninitiated: what is a Game Advisor?
It is a person that relates to customer service and helps them to keep to update on the latest systems, mobile phones, pc games etc. that you are knowledgeable in. If you Don't have a lot of game knowledge as well as pc you will not be considered a position for Game Advisor and you have to have a lot of retail experience which I Don't have yet...
I've worked for the company, I won't go into too much detail but I will just say as with all places, if you can sell that's no. 1 to them. Don't think for a second that game knowledge matters. It helps to a degree, but if you're not a salesman, it doesn't matter if you know more about games than every other store employee combined. As far as the attitude of some game advisors, mangers, etc, given some of the types of customers I had to deal with, and given the directives of the bosses, there's a good reason some of these people get testy. You should always try your best to maintain composure, but some people are just straight up scum. Working for that company made me a much more cynical person, that's for sure. Not saying you did anything to deserve to get snapped at, but having walked in the same shoes as some of these Gamestop employees, I am a bit more sympathetic to them than most people on the internet are because I know what it's like. I never started hating video games, but I hated every day that I worked for that company. You could be having the best day and then you get to work and it goes straight to hell. I'm back in journalism now and I'm thankful every single day that I was able to get back into this field.
As someone in the retail field I can say that nowadays customers are jerks. Gone are the days of happy customers now every customer is out for themselves it seems. They are always trying to get something for nothing and they act like the store is out to screw them in one way or another. They take advantage of legalities knowing that store will give in to their demands the moment they yell that they are going to sue to flame the business on Facebook. So yeah I can't blame salepeople or managers for being rude to customers. I hate the fact that corporate expects you to take every insult a customer hurls at you with a smile, F that.
Anyway I can rant on this for hours as you can probably tell, but to confirm what @Gamer83 said about Gamestop you need to have a strong sales background for them to even look at your application. They don't care how many years you have been playing video games or how knowledgeable in video games you are, I guess they figure you will learn that at the store or something. My friend who is even more knowledgeable in video games then me applied there and even got an interview. While he was waiting for his interview he started talking with another guy that was there for an interview as well. Long story short the other guy had no knowledge of video games what so ever but had worked for several years at Sears as a large appliance salesman and got the job over my friend who had no sales experience whats so ever. So yeah most of the employees and even managers probably don't take gaming as serious as us.

That's pretty much how it works. They'll take almost anybody for a temp holiday job and if you're able to get a spot, that's when you have to prove you can sell. If you are consistently able to up-sell customers on the products, getting them to buy Live/PSN subscriptions, controllers, extra games, etc, they'll keep you around. But any other time of year when Gamestop hires, you're not going to have much of a chance unless you have a sales background or are fortunate enough to know somebody at the company and they're willing to take a risk.
It just tough finding a job elsewhere and the reason I get money because I am part of the people that receives social security benefits and for how long, I cannot live off of that all the time! I need to work at a job to support for my needs and sometimes my wants. What if my mom and step dad aren't around anymore? I am worried about my future since I am not yet living on my own and it is going to be tough for me.
There is no way I'm going to be living in this house here in Arizona. Sooner or later, I have to I have to be independent and look for a job, but my previous employer is not giving me any more hours because of slow business. I Don't work in cashier just to let you know I am a grill cook at McDonald's. I hate doing the same thing over again so I want to try something new! I want to be trained in retail customer service. How can I expect to do that in the future if I keep depending on my social benefits?!
I get where you're coming from. Unfortunately a lot of places don't hire unless you have experience in the field though, or a degree from a really, really prestigious university. Like I said, with Gamestop, the best time to join them if you lack the experience is during the holidays. From what I noticed, they'll take almost anyone and if you have a lot of knowledge about gaming, that's the time of year that qualification actually counts. They usually start the hiring in late September and then you get a few months to show your sales skills to them.
People above are right about retail sucking. I've worked at wal-mart and target and I thought both were a living nightmare. Many of the customers were rude, management has no idea what they are doing and the companies could care less about you. I remember the big flood of pennsylvania in 2011. Cops had to stop at retail stores to tell them that they had to close. I was working at Target, wondering if I was going to be able to get home (had to spend 2 nights at a hotel because my roads were closed), anyways, my manager at the time was only worried about getting the umbrellas and ponchos to the front of the store to sell them, not caring about the employees.
Back to gamestop...I love the store for being able to get some of the older games and most of the employees are very nice. My 3-year old daughter is in love with mario, and they always keep posters and stand-ups aside for her and spoil her to death, but that's the gamestop store in the mall. There's one outside of the mall that is bigger and carries more, but the employees in there do nothing but use every cuss word to customers, not even caring if there are children in there or not. I think this store in general needs to be more professional. I hate the big earrings in the ears (do you people not realize that when you get older, you're going to be looking even more dumb when you have to take them out). I don't think the many earrings, looking gothic and looking like a slob should not be worn. I really don't think the language needs to be said either. You're supposed to be professional and friendly no matter what, even if you are having a bad day, or even if you did have a bad run-in with some customers. BE PROFESSIONAL.

This drives me crazy... When I go there 9 times out of 10 I know what I want before I get there. I want to go in grab it pay and leave. Then I have to stand there for 5 minutes while they try to get me to pre-order every game coming out for the next year.
I know they are forced to do this but after I say not interested a few times they should take a hint...
Oh just to let you all know, I put my complaint through a website www.tellgamestop.com to explain what happen at the store and a district manager for that game stop will give me a call back about it.

Thank God for Amazon haha.
That annoys me any store that I go to. Honestly I hate trying to upsell to customers my thing is if a customer wants it they will ask for it. The only other thing I hate worst is when they try to get you to sign up for a store credit card. If I want a freakin credit card I would be at my bank not a store. :/

I can see asking if you know about a season pass, but several pre-orders and credit cards even? If a company did that to me I'd never shop there again. Does corporate really think they can sell you on a credit card? Then again, maybe it does work, seeing as sometimes the customer isn't always the brightest person.

Some corporations do. When I worked at Linens N Things people would get reprimanded if the manager or some one higher up saw them ending a transaction at the register and not offer a credit card. Heck I remember when I worked their a few times I had to walk around the store with the credit card applications and just walk up to people and pitch them the card. On top of that when I did that they expected me to get like 10 people an hour signed up or something like that I don't remember how many exactly. One of the worst jobs I ever had.
Now every time I go to Target and am checking out I always get asked can I put this on your Target card? Which I reply no and then they ask do I have one which I say no and I don't want one and then they start their stupid pitch. I honestly think that is rude and inconsiderate. But I can't believe how many employees go along with that BS.

There are enough people out there who must get suckered into these credit cards because a lot of stores have them. I hated trying to sell the Powerup Rewards card to the mother of 3 screaming children who was just looking to get out of the store, now the idiots at Gamestop have added a credit card on top of that, it's sickening. And I can definitely back up what @Tasuki about managers reprimanding you if you don't offer this crap even to people who are entirely uninterested. It's idiotic and frankly, downright scummy, and that's why I couldn't have been more thrilled to leave retail behind. I had more respect for myself when I was bussing tables in college than I did when I was working at Gamestop, because at least bussing tables I was making an honest living not slaving for total slime. Sometimes you have to do stuff you don't want to, to get by, but if I was going to work retail I wish I found a different place to work than Gamestop because it changed me in a lot of ways, not for the better. The worst part is though, the people who feel the brunt of the customers who do get angry with this bullsh*t aren't the ones who deserve it. The scumbags sitting in their ivory towers giving directives to employees they don't even take 2 seconds to try and get to know are the ones who should be feeling the heat. It absolutely sickens me every day that these people, who are the lowest of the low, have good things happen for them when they absolutely do not deserve it for the way they treat other people.
