Wayne Rooney will never be England's greatest ever striker, no matter how many goals he scores tonight (one already) or throughout his career. The highest goal scorer? Certainly. The greatest? Nowhere near good enough to even clean the boots of our real greatest.

There's a start for you @CanisWolfred.

Wayne Rooney is a great footballer - but he has too many quiet games and always dips in form at the worst possible time for England in big competitions. I'm a big believer in statistics and he has won stuff, scored bags of goals and sets up people as well. Unfortunately he is playing in the messi, Ronaldo, neuer, robben, iniesta, neymar era so its unlucky for him. But he's seen off falcao and rvp at man utd so he must be doing something right.

Lets be honest, RVP and Falcao are just finishers. Rooney is a bit more versatile than those two. Outside of the boxor when you don't have possession, You would rather have a player like Rooney but he has too much of a bad attitude, impetuous and not consistent enough to be a 'great' player. Messi (for example) is having a bad season if he doesn't score 40+ goals and create 100's of chances but he also plays the game in the right spirit and considering the amount of times he is cynically fouled, he never seems to lose control either.

Rooney is England's best player and has been since David Beckham hung 'em up. I prefer to support him because he is the only hope England have of achieving anything. He's not as good as Messi or Ronaldo, but if you just talk about English players, he stands out by a mile.

@EyeDeeNO76 Sky with the other two. This has all been a massive over the top waste of print to get them off their contracts, on to four times the money but less than a tenth of the viewing figures. Stinks of a scam.

Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes have all been better than Rooney since Beckham and were all better than Beckham too. Don't get me wrong, on his day Golden Balls was great but he was never as good as the media made him out to be If you believe the media then Beckham was a combination of Messi, Ronaldo and Suarez when giving just a 5/10 performance. The hype they give any southern footballer (look at Kane) is ridiculous and if he plays for the team just outside of Manchester it's double extreme hype.

As for Shrek, I wouldn't have him in the starting XI. Sturridge, Sterling, Welbeck and now Kane are England's four best attacking players. I would rather you start Roony against us (I'm half Italian and support them) on Tuesday than any of those four if they were all fit. Every time England go into a big test they start Rooney and fail it. For six odd years now he has gone backwards and cares only about money - look at him holding United to ransom twice! - while losing everything about him that made him special. He could have been a truly wonderful player, now he's 'just' a good one who always disappears when it matters most, just like all the other English bottlers.

@Jaz007 Don't you mean inJUSTICE? I've been shouted at several times for having the nerve to not write inFAMOUS 'properly.'

I disagree to an extent and agree with your opinion on Rooney. Gerrard and Lampard couldn't play together and Scholes rarely got in the team because of them. That said the Portugal quarter when we lost on penalties was a tough one to take and we could of gone all the way and we had a great team at that point. Rooney has really poor dips in form and as we have relied on him so much has cost England and I agree on that point. Beckham was brilliant, a top 10 in the world player at the time. He wasn't your everyday jinxing dribbler with great strength and amazing defending - but his passing, crossing and dead all play was unbelievable. He's won leagues in 3 countries (I havnt checked unsure if he won in Italy) the champions league, got us through on his own against Greece and scored the best goal in premier league history. His media career made him out to be the best - and as a ball crossing midfielder he probably was.

I'm an Everton fan unfortunately :/ But actually after posting earlier I'm going to post one last thing on football (great game - but loads of opinions and no ones right or wrong) the game has changed alot in the last 15 years its become faster and the mix of the newer offside rule, fouls if you slightly touch someone, even better pitches and no tackling from behind have made the game more about the dribblers and more attacking. I dont think you can compare Figo, Zidane, Beckham and Brazilian Ronaldo to Messi, Suarez, Robben and Portugese Ronaldo. They were the best players then, messi and co now. All I do know, is that if messi was up against an Italian team in the european cup during the 90s he would have been taken out.

I'm united fan. I don't think it's obvious. The problem with having so many 'fans' is that means there is also plenty of ignorance. I wouldn't say Lampard is better than Beckham and that Wayne is on a par with Lamps. I guess this is now a footie thread.

we can change that, what's everyone hoping to get for Easter?

Ronney is technically a lot better than Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard. Beckham was England's best performer. Gerrard was a flop and though Lampard was very solid, he never reached the same heights as Beckham. Michael Owen was also very good when he was young. Personally I'd say Beckham> Rooney> Lampard>Owen>Gerrard. Basically, Gerrard and England was never a great combination.

I've been in a creative mood lately. Wrote two little stories in the past 10 days, and I just wrote a poem. I hope this lasts through Tuesday and Wednesday, so I can use those days to draw more.

Went to the Eden project back in 2012, food was definitely top notch there.
