Topic: Ping Spikes

While playing Rocket League I was suffering from a lot of lag which made playing the game a chore, I tried some other games and found similar problems. My connection speeds through a Ethernet Powerline has been solid, so it turns out that I'm getting high ping spikes. It happened a few weeks ago so I rebooted my router and that seemed to work but now it's come back so I've rebooted it again but I get the impression that it's only a temporary solution. Any advice please?

A couple of questions before I can give a solid diagnosis

Whos your internet provider?

What kind of area do you live in? (ie rural, urban, city centre)

Has anyone else got access to your internet while your using it?

Whats your router?

Have you had issues with any of the cabling before?

@themcnoisy: My ISP is Virgin Media
I live in a small coastal town in north east England
Yes one other person has access, mainly thought a smartphone and occasionally a laptop.
My router is a Virgin Media SuperHub
I can't recall any issues with the cabling previously.

@adf86: Yeah Virgin are known for this and their stock hubs are rubbish. If you have both your 2.4ghz and 5ghz flashing (top 2 icons) there's something wrong. I would swap to a better hub.

You can probably see them flashing away - that's not meant to happen. The top 2 icons 5ghz and 2.4 should be on constant not intermittent. But they always - always start flashing.

Alright interesting, so you reckon I'm better off getting a new router?

@adf86: I would call virgin (good luck with this) measure your data transfer rate using the ps4 test inet connection button in the settings, obviously this will give you some ammunition when talking to the call centre staff. Write down the times its slowed down, also if its happening more now than when it was just installed. That would be my first thing to do.

They will likely palm you off, at this stage buy a new router. A Buffalo AC 1200 is decent, but your best doing your own homework.

But yeah, the virgin super hubs are cheap and seemingly go mental after a few months. I had 3 sent out by virgin before upgrading and now my ping is usually one of the best once in a game.
