Not my personal Game of the Year, I put it a very close third behind GTA V and The Last of Us, but I can still get on board with this and I'm not somebody who usually agrees with this website. I do like that they went with a handheld game though, this isn't any less of an awesome experience just because it can't be played on a hdtv. Lots of haters out though, some real mad people in the comment section.
Definitely nice to see a handheld win, becuase that rarely happens. I haven't played the game, but I'm told it's very, very good. Seems like a solid pick.
Well, I liked A Link Between Worlds a lot and I'm glad that a handheld won. Personally, I don't know which game is my GOTY as I played a lot of amazing and different games, all offering something that stood out.
Seems like a weird choice. I got so tired of the Zelda formula that I can't see myself picking this up any time soon, but I do have a 3DS in a drawer somewhere so if I have free time I might give it a go. It's hard to say what my GOTY is, Bioshock Infinite was good, so was TLOU, Tomb Raider and GTAV.
I also like AC4, even though the main story dragged it down IMO, but still lots of fun, different setting and amazing graphics on PS4 so I might have to choose that. Especially as it was more recent.
While it's nice to see a handheld game win GOTY but in all honesty I think they should have handheld games in a separate category. But I am surprised that GTA V didn't win or even The Last of Us, but maybe if they separated handheld and home consoles.

I'm a little surprised GTA V didn't win either. I think TLoU had probably the best story telling but GTA V was just a notch below. As far as a game that blends all elements, story, characters, content, setting, gameplay and fun, I don't think any game in 2013 topped GTA.
This isn't the first time GameSpot has blatantly ignored the consensus opinion for GOTY.
Which is about the most respectable thing they could've done. It's very unexpected, which makes these award thing-ies all the more interesting. Now I might pay attention to them next year when they do this award thing to see what they do then. It's win-win, an underdog gets its due, and Gamespot gets some attention that it actually deserves for once. I wish more gaming sites had their gall.
And seriously, it's about time a Handheld game won one of these things. The difference between handheld and console games have become marginal at best, and there have been console quality handheld games for a very long time, yet the gaming press still treats handheld games like second-class citizens for no reason other than "they're on a smaller screen". It's bullcrtap and I'm glad to see a major player fighting against it.
I don't know any game that has kept me glued to a console like A Link Between Worlds has the past few weeks certainly isn't bad. Heck its GOTY material in my book. But then again so was GTA V, Assassin's Creed IV, Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider.

It's not a debate at all. Gamespot gave Zelda an award. It happened. It's done. What is there to debate? Whether or not it deserves it? That's a cicular argument based solely on individual tastes that would get us nowhere, especially since quite a few of us haven't had a chance to play the game yet.
And yes, Persona 4: The Golden should've won at least one GOTY last year. But it didn't. Thank you for proving my point - there's a bais against handheld games. People saying "Handheld games should be judged separately" also adds to my point. They're games as good if not better than any console game, and they deserve their due. Which they just got some of. How convenient.
@CanisWolfred: You know what you make a point there. I forgot how far handheld games have come in the last couple of years. I believe I do take back what I say about them being in separate categories.
Not to get off track here, I mean take for example MHU it runs just as good on the 3DS and it does on the Wii U.

Yeah, there was a time when I'd have said separate categories were needed too but those days are long gone.
Oh what a shame, the self-appointed lord of quality is done here. Too bad, I was hoping he would impart upon us more of his wisdom about the exact quality of games, which throws all dissenters into question. After all, he's played them.

Honestly it just like any award show/print up etc. Its all just opinions. I can't tell you how many times movies that got best pictures won it when I thought others should have, then again there have also been movies not nominated at all that I think should have won. Even if you do a community poll I am sure games/movies or whatever it is will be on that list that some of us don't think should be. Its just opinions thats all.

Can we please stop with how it's a travesty? I mean yeah I dont agree that it's a travesty but if that's his opinion that's his opinion. Just ignore the opinion and move on.
Now if you excuse me I think I will go and sneak in a few minutes of the GOTY before I have to go to work.

My wife just bought me the 3dsxl Zelda bundle. and while I say I'm not 100% this is my GOTY, it is probably pretty close. I thought it was going to be very good, and it has been stellar. I definitely think it had to be close with Last of us, Bioshock, and GTA, though. (Only played like 2 hours of GTA)
