DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE STORY!
The last time I finished the story was a while ago so maybe Im missing something, but I was often surprised, sometimes appalled by people feeling conflicted about the last part of the story.
Also I read articles in which the author feels guilty because he thinks theres a chance he wouldnt do the 'right thing' as the fireflies put it. (I thought man thats mad)

Am I the only one who would do what Joel did and feel I did the right thing even if feeling guilty?

To sum up, after a charming first meeting with the Fireflies when they KO Joel who was trying to resuscitate half drown Ellie they tell you they got to murder Ellie in the next hour to save mankind
(while the world has been in that state for 20 years and cant wait a lil bit longer to be saved)
of course you trust their amazingly gifted doctors will squeeze an antidote out of Ellies brain and they are not going to
use it for their sole community getting out of the way the other factions (including Tommys community)
with some biological warfare.

Also I think Ellie (and other partly or probably future totally immune kids, logic tells me) are indeed mankind's hope but in their surviving rather than in their dying 'for the greater good'.

As for people being shocked by Joels lies to protect Ellie, that seems a bit childish tbh

The crowd, accepting this immediately, assumed the anti-Eurasian posters and banners everywhere were the result of acts of sabotage by agents of Goldstein and ripped them from the walls.

I think its the fact that he lied to her is why he feels guilty. After everything they have been through she cant trust him because she knows he has lied to her face even if it was for the right reasons. After ellie and riley were attacked and everything they went through to get to the fireflies with tess dying and the other little boy and his brother ive forgot their names I think she had commited to the fact that she was willing to do whatever it took to make the journey not be for nothing and if that meant she had to die then she was prepared to do that. The fact that Joel selfishly saved her so he wouldnt be alone was what peoples problems were with. But I agree that it was the right thing and humanity's  best hope is with immune people surviving and passing that on to their kids and so on.

That's a recurrent thing people say like 'bhooo he lied and being selfish not to be alone etc'
Whhile its not easy to get into someones personality we can assume Joel is an old bear who lost his soul 20 years ago who chose to fight for survival like he told ellie to find everyday a reason so survive for. I can imagine the world could go to hell Joel wouldn't be that much bothered but Ellie is the one who showed him there's more to fight for than mere self survival. What's the big deal with lies in those barbaric times? He was being selfish when he left her to Tommy but then Elli desmontrated how much SHE needs him. He's not bothered about being alone if that meant Ellies well being. Joel lied to protect Ellies against her own naivety as she's still a child and doesn't realise the umanity worth fighting for is herself and tommys community the real future and hope

That were exactly my thoughts as well. I'd have done the same, and I, as a player, had a great joy the whole story through to shove shivs into the faces of anyone threatening Ellie wellbeing. As you said before, look at the world, even IF there was an antidote made from Ellie's Brain, the Fireflies are terrorists, they wouldn't just freely spread the cure to all communities, and even IF they did, do you think all those nests of bandits, murderers and rapists would be worth saving?

Tommys community is quite self sufficient, well protected and in my eyes the best bet on survival.
