I wish I'd owned this in college when I was taking that psychology class where the professor had us go out and do something weird in public so that we could record the reactions.

@JohnnyShoulder I think around here (the circle of trust that is the Push Square forums) there is no judgement and we all realize that this is a hobby done for fun and to each their own. I think we rib each other in good natured fun, but most of us are cool with whatever anyone else wants to play or watch. But there are certain games with a stigma, and that the average outsider would scoff at. For example, someone out there on this forum plays Fortnite 40 hours a week and has spent $500 on Fortnite DLC bundles and skins but is ashamed to admit it. I know you’re out there somewhere! Who are you?! Epic games is making billions somehow! 🤨

It’s kinda like how no one will admit that they eat at McDonalds because it’s considered so classless, yet somehow they sell a bazillion burgers every year. 😂

But yeah, some people buy into the stigma of a game more than others. I’ve never felt judged on here for liking Telltale, but I know lots of people probably think I’m crazy for wasting my time and money on them. 😅

@Th3solution I had a Grand Big Mac for dinner like the philistine I am. Admittedly, I do now have a rager of a sore stomach. I’d like to think this is the equivalent of spending £80 on FIFA and getting a bunch of Crewe Alexandria players, Roberto and a ‘legend’ Filip Šebo.

@KratosMD Agreed, the issue with Telltale was the over-saturation. The games were coming out fast and furiously, and just running the same engine out there every time with nary a new tweak except for the plot. They seemed to deliver good stories usually and so I enjoy them (I still have a few left in the backlog to get to - including the final season of TWD). The issue also is that other developers (like Dontnod) took the recipe and improved on it. The lack of innovation was part of Telltale’s undoing, along with the over saturation.

But other games certainly lack innovation and recycle the same basic engine and gameplay out each release, yet continue to sell like crazy. I just think that there are now derogatory preconceived notions about the story-heavy, light-on-gameplay, “interactive movie” monikered games now. What was initially enjoyed and felt to be a fresh take on video gaming is now considered boring and stale.

@Th3solution Nobody seemed to like the Back to the Future one but I really enjoyed it. The Sam & Max games are brilliant too but I remember playing the originals at my uncle’s house so it’s partly nostalgia. I reckon the over saturation is what got them, slapping a different logo over the same game will wear people down after a while.

@Th3solution Yeah I still don't get it, sorry. Maybe I'm not wired to think that what way. I play what I like and I don't really care if it doesn't hold up to anyone's lofty standards. I would hope no one is that judgemental on here. So what if someone plays X game for X amount of hours, we don't know their personal circumstances and they could be doing it to escape whatever they have going on. /rant over

@KratosMD I dunno the first Walking Dead Season I would probably put in my top 10 of last gen games and I can't what they do with the next season on The Wolf Among Us. Tales from the Borderlands has to be one of the most well written video games recently. Buy yeah generally speaking people don't tend speak of them in such high regards as they used. I think the quality got quite mixed towards the end and people were not so forgiving of the clunky and buggy engine. I also think most are fed up of the episodic format and the variable length between episodes.

I am strangely concerned that the rumoured backwards compatibility of next-gen consoles will mean we get less remasters because even though I have to buy games a second time - or third, fourth, fifth etc. on Nintendo consoles - I love having a remaster or a pack of remasters. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 etc. with multiple games, nice little themes and stuff - I like them.

@JohnnyShoulder I do admire your imperturbability to the outside world’s opinions. Yes, for the record I do very much agree with your philosophy. I believe I went on a pretty long (way too long, actually) soapbox recently on these forums that revolved around being cautious about passing judgement on others without knowing their first-hand situation. Even referenced my beloved Roosevelt profile quote, as I recall. The world definitely needs less judgy people. I think this thread, among others too, is actually evidence that this community is really good and above such discrimination and condemnation over people’s personal tastes. I’ve never felt sneered at here.
But people do dump on games they don’t like, which is fine too. It doesn’t mean we can’t express our own personal partialities. So I guess that’s where the unpopular opinion comes in. But yes, you and I are on the same page. I apologize if I made it sound like I was promoting discussion to enhance people’s feelings of inferiority or create a public spectacle of a person’s tastes. Quite the opposite.

I will say, actually the openness with which Push Square users are able to be about their tastes and, at times, quirky gaming preferences has opened me up to try things I never would have. Which in the end, is the whole point, as I see it, to these sort of discussions. For example, I might have to try Peggle now! Such high praise and I obviously have prejudged that game as being too mundane for my tastes (I mean hey, the main imagery on the front page is a unicorn and rainbows.... not exactly the type of marketing images that I would usually gravitate toward) and never would have known how awesome some people find the gameplay. 😄 And when that player who loves Fortnite comes out and says how awesome it is, then maybe I’ll be convinced too. Either way, I certainly would never want to denigrate one’s preferences.

I love the discussion though. Keep ‘em coming.

I know I'm gonna get ripped to shred but... I thought The Last of Us was good but not amazing. I still think games like Resident Evil 4 and Evil Within trumps the game and I'm not to emotionally moved by the story (I do like Ellie though). Still, it's a good game. Just not a masterpiece everyone keep saying it is. Multiplayer was pretty fun, although it really requires a lot of skill, which I like.

Other unpopular opinions I have (pls don't shred me lol):
•I kinda prefer remasters over backward compatibility if it means improving many of the game's features. Though BC is still not a bad idea.
•Fallout 76 and Anthem are not terrible. Just mediocre/average.
•Immortal Legacy is one of the better china developed games on the PS4 (though still very flawed).
•I personally find God of War 2018 better than the first God of War game, since there are people out there calling the first game better than the PS4 game.
•Pokemon Sword and Shield are not the best pokemon games, but they're also not the worst. Both hardcore fans and haters of the games really need to chill lol.
•Dark Souls 2 is more fun than Dark Souls 3.
•Soul Sacrifice is the best non-Monster Hunter hunting game, and I wished it recieved it expanded enough to have its own franchise.
•Xbox One exclusives are not terrible. They're just not as varied as the PS4's nor even the Switch's. Sunset Overdrive was great though.
•Transformers Devastation is one of Platinum's best games.
•Power Rangers Battle for the Grid is a better fighting game than Mortal Kombat 11.

@johncalmc @SoulsBourne128 I don't get the clamour for backwards compatibility either. I guess it does help sell consoles early in their lifecycle so people don't feel like they're abandoning the last gen completely (although I normally hold out a little as it sometimes seems the early console models have the most issues).

But then I seem to be in a minority on here in that I play one game at a time and almost never go back to a game once I've done with it. This means my PS1/2/3 are all just in a box somewhere in the loft (until I have my way and have them out.... if the wife allows it).

@SoulsBourne128 @Thrillho for Backwards Compatibility i also don't think it's really needed, it's a nice option and can be helpful at the start of a new generation as it gives you more to play on your new system during the first year lull but it's not a necessity

i also agree on the XB1 exclusives, Transformers and Battle for the Grid

as for God of War i think both are great but i'm still undecided which i think is the better game as they are so different to each other, it's like comparing Mario to Zelda

as for the others, never played them so i can't say anything about them

@RogerRoger I knew it! It all makes sense now! I knew your persona was all a front for something. Everyone knows there no such thing as a Star Wars fan who also likes Star Trek. I’ve heard that such a paradox would create a unraveling of the space-time continuum.

@SoulsBourne128 Nice list! Specifically your mention of Soul Sacrifice and Transformers Devastation have caught my eye. I have SS loaded on my Vita memory card to play one day, just never got around to it. And I think TD was a PS+ offering a while back so it should be in my library. I’m not particularly a fan of the Transformers franchise and don’t know all the lore, would I still like it?

@Th3solution i like Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who

what's that going to do to the space-time continuum?

@Th3solution although I'm not embarrassed, I think the Nekopara series. When they brought those to PS4 without the adult scenes on PC, I was all over it. Adorable catgirls with heartwarming stories? Sign me up! I'm all in for sure! They get a lot of flak, but 1, they are adorable, 2 they don't get as much credit for their comedy as they should. They honestly are pretty funny with mostly well-written dialogue. The writing gets better with each entry too I feel like (well 3 has the best and worst writing). They also aren't echii, hentai, or anything like that on console. I've received some flak from friends who saw what I was playing, but I don't care.

LuisCruz13

@Th3solution That depends. If you care more for the gameplay than the story, then give it a go. I recently started playing the game again. The soundtrack is great and the combat, while simplistic, is mindlessly fun and hectic. I even managed to platinum the game back in 2016. Was kinda hard due to the S rank requirements but nevertheless, it was very satisfying.

@FullbringIchigo No wonder our world is in shambles. There’s probably destructive planetary chaos across the galaxy as we speak.
As long as you don’t like both Marvel and DC, then maybe the fiber of the universe can be tenuously held together. 😉

@LuisCruz13 Alright, good to know. I didn’t much care for the demo of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but I didn’t play the actual game. I did really like Vanquish and Bayonetta and absolutely adored NieR: Automata. (And Babylon’s Fall looks pretty good so far.). So if Transformers can be considered better, then that is high praise indeed.

@FullbringIchigo 🤔 Hmmm, lemme see. Something doesn’t quite gel here. I’m not sure how this is all possible metaphysically.
You’re clearly a hardcore gamer... you wouldn’t happen to like Fortnite, would you? 😜
