i only played one vita game this e3, but it might have been my favorite game of the show.
a lot of times developers try to make something charming or cute, and it comes off as forced (see disney infinity). tearaway is genuine. there's a lot of effort in the game's design to make you really feel part of the world in more ways than one.
you, the player, are the god of the world in tearaway, and the main character's quest is to deliver the god the letter. it's a 3d platformer, and at first you can only make the character jump by tapping the back of the vita. it's a simple thing used to great effect, even when it's just teaching you how to play the game- which it does through actual level design and not forced tutorials. this is also before the game allows you to make the character jump using the buttons, so it familiarizes the player with the idea of manhandling the vita early on.
i think one of the really nice touches was at one point, the character looks up to see the sun, and in the middle, the vita uses the front camera to show your face. i don't know why. maybe it was just an honest, nice little touch, but i that it brought the story together at the start so easily. aw, the messenger wants to deliver you a letter! so you will help him on his quest. i really want to see what's inside.
there are other elements at play here too. the game asks whether you're male or female, what your eye and hair color is, what matches your skin tone best, and if you're a kid or not. so when the fingers break through the screen, they represent your own as much as possible.
platformers are my favorite genre. it's hard to surprise me anymore when it comes to new games in the genre. however, whenever something does, it usually becomes one of my favorites. i wasn't considering a vita for this game alone- there were others that i was interested in, but tearaway might push me over the edge. it looks really special.
