Hi there, I've just ordered a decent laptop and have missed out on the majority of releases. What games are good? Try not to list anything available on Playstation. I've got loads of games up to the Deus Ex / Unreal Tournament / Baldurs gate era a huge gap then Elite, inside and a bunch on indy and Kickstarter games from 4/5 years ago. So yeah I'm looking to fill that gap with some great games.

Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. They're a small independent team of hardcore gamers based in New Zealand and have created Path of Exile as the game that they'd want to play themselves. It is designed around a strong barter-based online item economy, deep character customisation, competitive PvP and ladder races. The game is completely free and will never be "pay to win"
@themcnoisy Try Gog.com (Good Old Games) they have a bunch of older PC games at good prices, when I had a PC that was were I would get most of my PC games.
Anyway some games I recommend are
The City Builder Series — Ceaser III, Pharaoh, Zeus: Master of Olympus and Empire by Sierra. If you like city building games like SimCity then this would be up your alley. Each game takes place in an ancient time period, Rome, Egypt, Greece, and China. There is a campaign mode as well as free play.
Heroes of Might and Magic — I say 1, 2, and 3 are the best with 5 being ok and 4 being the worst of the series. They are a strategy type game that's a spin off from the Might and Magic series. You take control of a castle each with there own unique style of troops (Necropolis for example have undead troops, Confluence has elemental type troops, and Castles have Knight type troops). It has a campaign mode, free play mode and offers multiplayer as well. This series as well are the City Builder series are my favorite PC games.
Warcraft and Starcraft — RTS games by Blizzard I am sure you have heard of them. If you like RTS games then check them out.

@Tasuki thanks for the advice, city building sounds great!

If you don't mind using a guide to fix errors upon installation due to the game being a bit wonky with modern computers and also installing an unofficial patch to fix some major bugs, I highly, highly recommend Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines. It's a must buy if you like RPGs with a focus on characters and side (and story) quests, and if you generally like the sound of being a vampire in a modern city, and also making a character of your own, not only in what stats you pump and which bloodline he's from, but also how he interacts with other people in the game. It's sort of like Mass Effect in that you have multiple choices in what to say to people during conversations.
The game also has awesome replayability due to how different the various clans/bloodlines are.
The biggest drawback of the game is the errors most people get when they first buy it, but it doesn't take long at all to fix them if you use some of the guides out there, particularly on Steam. There's a guy in the "Still having problems? POST HERE!!" thread on the Steam community who helped me out with the error I was getting, so I would ask there if you need help. It's really not hard at all, it's just a matter of learning what you're supposed to click to fix it.
The unofficial patch also only takes like a minute to install, but make sure you use the local files thing in Steam to find out where the game files are in your computer so that you can install the unofficial patch there, instead of somewhere else. The place the patch initially wants to install might not be where the game really is on your computer, so keep that in mind. I would definitely recommend the patch though, because apparently the game is a buggy mess without it. I've yet to encounter a single bug so far with the patch installed, though.
@Tasuki Just want to say thanks for pointing me in the direction of gog. I spent the whole night looking up games. I like the catalogue and it's quite funny, but I'm drawn to the older games a lot more than the newer ones.
Now I just need my laptop to land!
@CountFunkula78 thanks bro, I will be getting undertale to support the Vita. I think Warhammer may need a touch more power to run well too so I'm only looking for older games along that line. I'm thinking maybe Rome total war or one of the older variants. Edit) I have FTL already

Its not my favourite genre, but yeah will play them. I'm pretty adept at AGS the free point and click game software, and I prefer some of the games available for free off that site. One in particular you are stuck in a room with a sniper over the over in another building from you and your locked in. Will try to grab a link.

@Quintumply www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk take a look, all completely free. Great software tool.
It gave me an appreciation for the genre, I also now understand why multi dimensional games were so in vogue. Once you have a room template with all the usable entrances and objects it's so much easier to copy and paste and throw in a slightly different graphic on top. Same scenario for visiting the same location at different times of the game.

@themcnoisy No problem mate! I can understand, I am the same way. When I had my PC I tend to buy older PC games to. Yeah I could buy and run newer games at the time on my PC but that's what I had a 360 for. Keep your eye on Gog.com they have crazy sales very often. I once got the city builder collection which was all the games I mentioned before for $5!!

@kyleforrester87 Path of Exile is my favourite game, I love everyone cause this game is brilliant. From gameplay, across maps to currency - Best mmo of our times.
When dealing with sales in e-sports and games such as Diablo 3 and Path of Exile you need to have a discernment. Economics and currency in PoE are very important to me because I sell poe orbs and diablo 3 legendaries.
The main PoE currency are exalted orbs and chaos orbs, exalted orbs are more expensive and usually are worth around 100 chaos orbs. Soon the price of orbits will jump as the new add-on comes out, patch v 3.0.0. There will be added 6 new acts and new poe orbs, such as ancient orb. I am interested in this and I buy and sell my assortment at https://www.odealo.com
@Immortale It does look very good. Hopefully I can get a go myself in the future. Still some life in my Macs but my next eventual upgrade will be a relitively competent PC to enjoy some of the games that don't make it over to console. Although the way things are going that's becoming less of an issue (Divinity, Pillars, Sims, Sudden Strike spring to mind...)
@themcnoisy Bit late to this and hope you've found some good games. I can make a suggestion that will depend a lot on your tastes in gaming, if you like games like Sim City then I can fully recommend a game called Factorio. It is a builder game that makes you feel very clever when you figure out how to automate part of your base, but then throws a load more problems at you. There is a demo on Steam and their website and plenty of tutorials on Youtube to help you through the initial learning curve.
Another great game with a similar learning curve is Rimworld which also caries a demo iir. Both games shouldn't tax a more recent laptop much as the load is mainly on the CPU and not the graphics card.
