I've played games my entire life, but when I was just getting old enough to properly appreciate them, the industry was going through a bit of an FMV boom. Stuff like the Mega CD (or SEGA CD, I guess) and 3DO were pretty new on the market, and I ended up playing a lot of FMV games.
They were terrible, but they've stuck with me all these years. I think it's interesting that, between Guitar Hero Live, Need for Speed, and Quantum Break (to a lesser extent), we're kind of seeing a renaissance of those types of games.
Some of my favourites:
The Horde (3DO)
I honestly still rather like this game. It's not an FMV game in the sense that the gameplay uses video, too, but the cut-scenes all feature real actors and stuff. It's essentially a mix of character action and city building. You have to raise money by developing a village, while also fighting off monsters that attack it. It was made by Crystal Dynamics, who now obviously make the Tomb Raider games.
Need for Speed (3DO)
Again, not technically a full FMV game, but the cut-scenes were amazing. This dude was a total douche. ^
Ground Zero: Texas (Mega CD)
Pretty sure Sony made this game. It was a light-gun type title which used FMV throughout. It's about aliens who have disguised themselves as ordinary people in a quaint Texas village, and it's your job to take out the trash. The game sucks hard, but I genuinely enjoy the presentation.
I remember playing Mad Dog McGee in arcades back in the day, Judge Dredd on PS1 was another, Night Trap of course. Star Wars Rebel Assault and Jedi Knight and everyone was cringeworthy
I only had a couple of Sega CD games during that time. I remember Mortal Kombat on Sega CD had the actual commercial that would play before the game and I remember Sewer Shark but other then that, not too much.
Oh and guys let's be kind with people who have older devices and please post links rather then embedding a bunch of videos. Thanks.
the only really good FMV games I remember playing were Gabriel Knight the Beast Within and the two Tex Murphy Games: Under a Killing Moon and Pandora Directive....
I have not played it yet, but the new Tex Murphy game published by Atlus seems to be a good indication FMV could be a viable thing in modern day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fubvpa5w0ps
I would definitely like to see more people trying to do modern FMV games
