@JudgeDredd I can't for the life of me work out why they took out the counter mechanic from the excellent (and proven) combat system. It makes no sense. I was enjoying the story, but the gameplay was draining my will to live so I gave up. Maybe one to go back to on a rainy weekend.

Just sitting watching the credits roll in Tales of Arise,. Great game, will dip in and out until I have the platinum.

Dragon Quest II is done and dusted. A pretty big step up from the first game, although with similar annoyances and an absolutely brutal difficulty curve. The cave just before the final dungeon is downright evil too, with a combination of looping corridors and pits in the floor. I still enjoyed it for the most part though.

So the other day I beat Crisis Core Reunion.
I love it just as much as I did back then & the story gets me every time.

I’ll never get the platinum for this game however just because of the mini games.
Squats in this game is just near impossible. The opponent won’t have an ‘off match’ & will always hit 55 unlike in FF7Remake where their scores would fluctuate. Spent like 4 hours on it before calling it quits.

As for the remaster/remake itself it’s pretty much the same game. It looks prettier & all the voice actors have been replaced with their FF7Remake counter parts. They sound incredibly similar to their CC originals. Zack in particular sounds almost identical.

As far as I can tell only 2 gameplay additions were added. ‘Stacking’ slot results so you can use abilities in a more optimal situation & the Buster Swords proficiency system.
Raising the proficiency is one heck of a grind but incredibly useful as you gain passive abilities while in buster stance. Even with spamming the buster stance, doing all 300 missions & completing the game I only ended on just over 76%. I would’ve gotten to 100% if I had saved the missions for once I got the buster sword, but I ended up clearing most beforehand.

Speaking of missions you have access to a whole lot of them so you get overpowered pretty quickly. I’m convinced that this game is meant to be played on hard because of this as I was one shotting even bosses by like the 20 hour mark.

All in all, 46 hours to complete the 300 combat missions & story. Ended the game at lvl 77, 76% proficiency & 77% trophies lol.
Oh yeah & the final super boss has 77,777,777hp which means that even if you hit max damage every time (99,999) the min number of hits it would take is 778 lmao.

Also the soundtrack is perfection. Don’t read the comments. Spoiler heavy.

Beat Modern Warfare Remastered, somehow the first time I’ve actually played the whole way through that game, I mostly played multiplayer back in the day. I’m astounded at how well it holds up, it’s honestly one of the best FPS campaigns out there. I expected a Michael Bay movie but it’s a lot more grounded than I remember, it feels almost like a mil-sim at times. I played on Veteran which made it feel incredibly tense as well. All Ghillied Up really is one of the all-time classic levels in gaming too, it’s basically perfect and you can see its influence on future shooters like the Metro series.

I do love that Griggs gets his brains blown out right at the end (heartbroken about him and Gaz) but then his VA pops up with a dreadful rap about his own character during the credits approximately 5 seconds later. Way to undermine his death!

@nessisonett Yeah agreed about All Ghillied Up. I'm not into Call of Duty at all, but I will always remember that level.

I finally completed "Arkham Origins" yesterday having dipped in and out across the festive period. It's just as good as the other ones (and I prefer it to "Arkham Knight"). I'm not sure why it's considered inferior just because it's not by Rocksteady even though they donated their source code from "Asylum" to WB Montreal for the project and stated that they consider the game to be canonical. Some of the boss fights (Bane and Deathstroke in particular) are series highlights.

@LN78 I think the general opinion of Arkham Origins is negative because of the game's technical issues. I played it on PS3 and it could start lagging from time to time. But it wasn't anything that ruined the experience for me. It's definitely a game worth playing and helps explain the relationship between Joker and Batman in greater detail.

@LtSarge I was on PS3 and it definitely chugged a little bit but then so did "City" if I remember correctly. I think performance issues just come with the territory when playing on that console (something I'm doing a lot of lately for some reason) so I tend to just ignore them.

I just made it to third area boss on Slay the Spire and beat it for the first time, saw the end credits roll and so I can now assert that I have slain said spire, never let it be said otherwise.
Think it was probably my 6/7th attempt. Probably not finished with the game yet as there are other characters I need to beat it with and other game modes to explore but I'm quite glad I decided to return to it.

Finally completed Code Vein. It's a decent low-budget anime Soulslike, has some cool bosses and a lot of character customization. Locals can be very boring, there are far too many dull military base looking places, but some are quite inventive. Story and dialogue is complete nonsense to the point where I just had to start skipping cutscenes, and I recommend anyone who plays it skips it too, for their own sanity.

@LN78 The more I play my PS3, the more I realise just how much it seemed to be held together with sellotape.

@nessisonett Since I had my launch day 60GB George Foreman resoldered and cleaned it has been a total beast. It's been getting the most use out of all my kit for a while now. Finding decent official Dualshock 3's is starting to be a ballache, though.

@LN78 I don’t have a Dualshock 3 anymore so I can’t play quite a few games which is irritating. Metal Gear Solid HD especially is annoying but I guess it’s because it uses pressure sensitive buttons. I also have one of those massive fat PS3s and other than the fan being a bit of a jet engine, it’s not too bad considering.

@nessisonett I've Frankensteined a couple together with the components from five or six so hopefully they'll last for a while. The games (a few exceptions aside) are ridiculously cheap for just now, so I'm not complaining. They'll probably skyrocket when Sony eventually shutter the online store, though.

Finished up Steelrising. I really enjoyed this one! It wears its inspiration on its sleeve as a soulslike but has some interesting ideas of its own. Level design shines, as does environmental design and the French Revolution setting creates a unique vibe to it all. What did surprise me was when the game, for all intents and purposes, turns into Greedfall. Thankfully I enjoyed that aspect, but I could see it throwing some people off. Anyway, I’m impressed with how well these quests and the player decisions interact with each other. All said and done, I highly recommend giving this one a try if you have any interest. Hopefully we see more like this from Spiders.

Finished Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter with my mum. Pretty decent, but not as good as Crimes and Punishment or Chapter One with its reliance on fairly terrible minigames. The cases were good fun though. Also, the game appears to be a sequel to a game that isn’t on PS4, but the one before it was ported to PS4. Make it make sense.

@RogerRoger I’m glad MGS2 held up for you. That’s no small task for such an older game. Nostalgia blurs opinion when one ponders these older games so I’ve found that replaying them is often disappointing. The fact that MGS2 is so timeless really is amazing.

But at the same time I’m comforted to see that you had a few of the same hang-ups that I’ve been having with the game, namely the pacing and way the exposition unfolds. It hasn’t ruined my playthrough yet, but it has been a little jarring from time to time.

@RogerRoger I actually only played that for the first time a couple of years ago and did think that it was frighteningly relevant even now. I agree about the way Kojima treats the female characters though, as too many of them only exist to further a man’s character arc. I did find Rose an interesting character at times but either something was slightly lost in translation or they just don’t quite sketch out her motivations and such.
