So this weekend I finally managed to hook up all of retro gaming system and I have to say it felt good. I didn't even touch my PS4 or my Wii U instead it was Crazy Taxi and Blue Stinger on the DC, Goldeneye on the N64, even Final Fight 3 on the SNES. Then something odd happened, I enjoyed gaming like I haven't in a long time. Don't get me wrong I love my PS4 and Wii U but it's just hard to explain.
Then today when I woke up I just decide that I wanted to go to a local retro game shop to look at games and maybe get a few games. Well when I got there again an odd thing happened, seeing a bunch of N64, Dreamcast and Genesis games got me excited, kinda like how I felt when I first saw the first trailers of GTA V. It was great I haven't felt this good about gaming for awhile.
I am not sure if this generations bs with DLC, broken day one games, online not working and exclusives just left a bad taste in my mouth for this Gen or what. I even got a game, Batman on the Genesis that I have never played or even heard of before but was really excited to give it a try. I couldn't wait to get home to play the way you think I was feeling it was MK X I was coming home with.
I am really considering going retro this generation for the most part. For one thing the price I spend on one broken day one patching needing current gen game I can get like 5 retro games. I don't have to worry about online connectivity issues I can just game plain and simple.
So I have to ask does this seem odd to you guys?

There are a few games I'd enjoy on the Dreamcast, I didn't though like crazy taxi and blue stinger never appealed. Im not really into retro gaming at all, I don't mind the odd mindless game like Destiny or MK X but the games I most look forward to are games with realistic, coherent and complex stories.
Maybe it's a case of just enjoying something a little more simplistic. This is something that occurs to me whenever I go back to more retro games; the fact that I'm not charging around an open world, keeping an eye on a map and following the stories of a dozen sidequests at once. In fact, I'd even say that it's quite relaxing to go back to older, more straightforward games now and then purely because we're bombarded with so many gameplay elements and mechanics these days.
I'm not saying more complex games are bad, but with a lot of titles these days, it really does feel like they try to cram in as much stuff as possible, even if it's unnecessary, and games can lose their focus because of it.
Yup, agree with the above. I often find myself going back to the 16 bit era, not only because of nostalgia, but as well, because of the simplicity and addictive nature of the gameplay first mentality that was so prevalent during that era is refreshing.
Hardly any modern games give you the instant fun factor of gems like the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Streets of Rage 2, or Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
That being said, I think this current generation will be awesome as well in its own right, never before have we had such variety.
No, I don't think so. Especially if you grew up with those games.
I honestly prefer older games at times. It feels like I'm playing fun games instead of something overly ambitious of something that tries too hard. I don't lie when I say I can jump into the PS1 era and before and never get bored. Alongside my (admittedly small since I lost most of it) library of PS1 games, one of my most played PS3 games is Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and I have the rereleases of Sonic Adventure and Jet Set Radio. I enjoy jumping into the games of the past as much as I like games today.
I think the future can be bright for games, but it doesn't hurt to go back to the past. I just hate the all-digital crap. I'm sorry but seeing a game on a menu isn't the same as holding it in your hands.

I binge on retro games every so often (Goldeneye is a great one to binge on), but I always stick to the current gen, as my go to source of gaming. Wakka said it best, memories are nice, but that's all they are. And so I selectively find the games I'd enjoy and play. So I skipped over DLC red flags, like Evolve.

I'll take the Vita to the grave with me, even if Sony won't.
People expect a bit to much from modern games, especially when they get 9 and 10/10's. Modern games arn't gunna complete you or take you back to your childhood, just enjoy it for what it is. Retro games don't carry the same expectations so make it easier for us to enjoy on some level. Both are good
I don't know if it's that I expect too much from modern games it's more like modern games to me feel like a chore at times if that makes sense at all. Take something like GTA V for example there is just so much to do that at times I feel over whelmed. I turn the game on I begin thinking do, we'll I want to play golf, yet I want to do the story missions, oh wait no I want to do this side mission..... Arrrrg overload, lol. Where as with a game like GoldenEye or Crazy Taxi I can start up do something right away l. Maybe this is just a case of being familiar with the game or something.
Don't get me wrong it's nice to see how far gaming has come, but I don't know today's games just seem at times to take themselves to serious.

I really agree to be honest, it is a chore sometimes, even watching through intros is a pain when you've got a new game and just want to get to the gameplay. I remember feeling like that in the PS1 era sometimes.
But I think we reached the point where gaming had to evolve and overall it's been for the better. The fact these types of games exist now doesnt stop those games released previously from being any good, so it shouldn't be one or another.
As a gamer these days you do need to approach games with a fairly significant willingness to commit and learn the systems.. It's something I had to learn to do after thinking maybe I'd grown tierd of gaming, which was toward the end of the PS2/early PS3 era.
@Tasuki
Sometimes I also feel that modern games are more chores than fun. I got that feeling playing the 1st Assassin's Creed (the 2nd took it away though). I think that sometimes modern games extend your play time doing boring tasks.
Because of that, I usually catch myself wanting to play some older games or even more modern games that I actually find fun. Lately, I put my huge backlog on hold because I wanted to finish my second playthrough of Persona 4 Golden, a game I absolutely love. I do it almost every year with The World Ends With You. Other times, I just want to enjoy a retro platformer (usually Donkey Kong Country).
I'm not full on retro because every month I like to finish 1 game on my 3DS (due to the activity log and my desire to find out which game will take the game of the month award from me), but I do uderstand the appeal to go back and play older games, specially when a lot of them hold up extremely well compared to the modern ones.
@Tasuki How much were the games? I might do the same I'm jealous right now. Sounds a million times more appealing and cheaper than the dlc and pay to win rollercoaster of modern day gaming. Can I convince the wife though??? Great thread Tasuki.

In fairness though there are plenty of indie games out there and being made for newgen consoles that are as good as a lot of the oldies. They benefit too from running on modern hardware, HD TVs with save points.. Sure it's a bit of an evolution but many of these games retain the same charm and no fuss gameplay you get from retro games. Plus they are cheap or even free most months with plus. Anyone given this months free platformer a fair run for its money yet? And I hear that tower of guns was inspired by the likes of Quake and other old school shooters..havnt heard of anyone playing either.
@kyleforrester87 100% on never alone. The mini videos included are ace and the game is short enough to not be a chore. But its not very good and some of the precision jumping bits are annoying. Glad I played it but wouldn't recommend it.

Yep I can agree with you there. A few of my favorite games this gen are Resogun, Strider and Dust.

@kyleforrester87 I tried out the first level of Tower of Guns, and it felt like average user-generated content... Maybe it gets better after level one, but that's the first impression it gave me.
Of course, with the likes of Bloodborne out at the same time why would you give it a good fair run? But were this the early 90's and you'd rented it from Blockbuster with your pocket money you'd probably have spent your entire weekend on it.. Lol.
Personally I played it for less than 2 minutes and I'd claim to be someone open minded about different types of games. I've promised myself I'll give it a fair crack though....lol
