So Ive been enjoying some games from gog on the PC thanks to admin @Tasuki advice. I used to hate mouse and keyboard, but now im a touch older I can get sucked right into a management game. I think the ease of control and all the commands available help.

Are you more of a joypad, mouse or joystick person?

@themcnoisy Growing up with only playing video games on a dedicated video game console like NES, Genesis Super NES etc. controllers always felt more natural to me in fact they still do to a bit. It was until I started playing World of Warcraft and after playing that for awhile did I get comfortable with a mouse and keyboard set up.

Mind you, there are only certain games I prefer using a keyboard and mouse over a controller and vice versa. I tend to prefer using mouse and keyboard with for MMOs like WoW or Neverwinter, MOBAs, such as Heroes of the Storm and Simulation games like Sim City and Ceasar III. However I like using controllers for platformers like Cuphead or Super Meat Boy, FPS (I know that is a sin lol) like CoD and Overwatch and Dungeon Crawlers like Diablo.

Honestly it depends on the game, if i'm playing a JRPG, a Racer or a fighter then it's all about the controller but if it's a FPS, 3rd Person Shooter or even a 1st Person RPG then a Keyboard and Mouse are far better

I haven't game on a PC for something like 10 years and I tried playing some first person PC games as Egx and I struggled!

One thing is I know a lot of people prefer mouse an keyboard for First person shooters because the aim is more accurate /responsive but I am so ingrained in controllers I consider it like when I used the Wii remote for Resident Evil 4 - just that little bit cheaty!

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

If the game is well optimised for keyboard and mouse then that is my preference every time. For genres like rts and city building games I find contollers way too clunky. Basically complex games tend not to work on controllers due to the lack of buttons. Controllers tend to do better in games like beat-em-ups and 2D platformers so I'll use them for those games.

I hate keyboard and mouse for gaming. It's the main reason I'm a console guy. I do have a pretty good gaming laptop that I play on but only if the game has controller support.

Mice (mouses?) Are great for fps games,keyboards..meh.I used to game on PC with gamepad and mouse,thats awesome.I wish the mouse was integrated into PS4 games,There are Keyboard and mice setups available for PS4 but they are right handed (i am lefty) and sort of elitist,People say mouse versus Controller would be unfair - But,side issue i don't play with aim assist (I think its silly) so how fair is that? What if anyone could plug a standard keyboard and mouse in usb? Games could have separate lobbys too.Sony could make an official bit of kit..Then maybe PS4 could get Quake Champions!

@Kidfried

some games work better with a mouse like sims games or rts games and the like
but beyond that i draw the line and only use a keyboard and mouse if i have no other choice

@Rudy_Manchego similar to me actually. Dont forget Thursday for the next egx bro!

@Dichotomy I prefer pad / controller to keyboard and mouse as I cant 100% touch type (although im pretty quick) so pressing the wrong key happens alot. But playing strategy games on PC has opened up another world to me, I used to have a passing interest. Maybe now because of age and experience with lack of reflex they are way better than I remember. But yes I dont think I could play rayman origins on a keyboard.

@FullbringIchigo I struggle with fps on keyboard and mouse. Im just too used to controllers for that now, but its a significant advantage playing on mouse as you can get a good lock on quickly.

@Tasuki whats Ceasar 3? Im playing Patrician which is absolutely brilliant.

@Splat do you have a mouse for your laptop? I bought a specialist mouse with 3 top buttons (unlike the standard 2), a scroll wheel which doubles as a button and 2 little buttons under your thumb. So theres 6 buttons altogether. Theres also a toggle on the right so you can adjust sensitivity which Im not advanced enough to use regulary. I use the scroll wheel button to jump between menus quickly and its changed my life. Give it a go!

@special_donky its defo mouses lol. The problem with quake because its been out so long the people still playing are masterful, so its tough to get into. Unreal Tournament ftw.

@Kidfried @KitsuneNight yeah I felt the same way until a few weeks ago. I have a ps2 pad with a cable to play on pc, but other than firing up elite a few weeks ago I havent touched it. But your right management games and sims etc are perfect for that type of control.

@themcnoisy Ceasar 3 is another city builder set in the Roman empire, I've not played it for a long time, but it was a good game. For me it ended up being more noteworthy because of the manual though, whoever was copying it for printing had obviously got a bit fed up towards the end and you should be able to find the result of that through Google

I've mentioned it before, but if you are enjoying the building games then give Factorio a go, for my money it is the best in class and feels more complete than most other games despite still being in early access - it is still sitting at 98% positive review on Steam from 20000+ reviews. A mere £15 I never regretted spending.

I am virtually 100% a controller gamer. As far back as the original 'Pong' and all the 'arcade' games, they have all used a 'controller' which to me says that the controller is the 'definitive' way to play. I do remember playing games like Donkey Kong, Snake, Asteroids, Space Invaders, pacman, Defender etc on keyboard though - until I bought a Joystick. This made these games so much easier and my top scores significantly increased. During the 80's , I gamed predominantly on a computer with a joystick - the Competition Pro was a beast and never let me down - unlike those Quickshot Joysticks that were flimsy and broke easily! The joystick was way more useful than the NES/SNES/Mega drive etc layouts with their 'D-Pad' offering just 4 ways of movement (unless you held more than 1 button at once) but a Joystick had at least 8 degrees of movement. Since the N64/PS1 era, I have gamed virtually 100% on a console with controllers. I did game with 'keyboard and mouse' with Starcraft on my Apple Mac at work (during lunch breaks across Lan with co-workers) but that was the only time. Since then though ALL my gaming is on console with controllers.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

@Dichotomy Ive got it, did you recommend that to me before? Unfortunately its sat on the family pc which has steam so Ive only had a couple of games but it is amazing, my personal PC is steam free due to music production and stuffs.

@BAMozzy mate I was thinking about you at egx. They had goldeneye setup and we played a 4 player game. Totally off topic but it made me laugh as you have mentioned before it is rubbish now. You were right!

@Tasuki thanks bro.

@themcnoisy yes, I think you made a post a bit back asking for advice on good games that didn't require a top of the line pc to run and I suggested it there. If I'd known Steam was an issue I'd have said it was on GOG or DRM free from the developers. You can always run Steam in offline mode and it only requires a verification log in every so often if clashing with its use on your main PC is the issue.

@Dichotomy I dont use steam too often but theres no way its going on my laptop! I should of looked into it more.

@themcnoisy LMAO. The amount of hours I spent playing Goldeneye!! I loved that game and how amazing the 'graphics' were - how close they looked to the actors, or so I thought at the time! This in part was why I much prefer to keep my memories of playing these games sacred - not tarnish them by going back and playing them now i have become accustomed to current gen with (upto) 4k visuals, HDR, and in a lot of cases - higher frame rates. People forget that a lot of games didn't run at 30fps - let alone 60fps!!!

At least I still have those 'great' memories and not ruined by replaying these. I know some games - particularly the more 'simple' or 'cartoon' looking games age well... At least some have anyway!

@themcnoisy Out of curiosity if I'm not being too nosy, why don't you want Steam on your laptop?

Dichotomy

themcnoisy

@Dichotomy continual updates and online nature of it. I regularly turn my laptop to completely offline as its easier to work. As I use it online infrequently, the last thing i want is a bunch of updates when i decide to look for a loop online.

Sometimes I make music whilst online searching and If im using Reason and im running a cpu heavy automation within the sequence, steam can crash my computer losing all of the progress.

Basically my laptop is used primarily as a production tool. Gog is great as you just download the game, steam operates as an annoying girlfriend constant vying for your attention.
