Did you know that the PS1 had online connectivity?

Depending on your region you could connect to the internet in two different ways.

1) USA

In America a company called light span released many different learning tools for the PS1, and one is was called the online connection CD. It was only used in 4 or 5 schools and was not something the public could actually buy, as the modem has still not really been documented.

However the disc has been preserved and uploaded to the internet archive which you can see here:

2) Japan

Japan being further ahead had mobile phones that had internet capablities. Sony publicly released an add-on called the i-mode adaptor:

This connected your phone to your PS1 the give you internet, email and online access. Quite a few games had online modes like i-mode Mo Issho that features then mascot character; Toro Inoue.
