Currently playing stardew valley on the switch, I’ve been pulled back into the never ending farming and giving everyone gifts so they like me.

@RogerRoger Good luck with the rest of Captain Toad and hope you both enjoy Wonderboy!

New Super Mario Bros. U. I won't be spending $60 to get the Switch version of a game that Nintendo gave me for free, and I never really got too far into it, so I decided to boot it up yesterday. I've been playing for several hours since then, and I'm up to the... fifth world? Anyway, it's fun. Level design is leagues better than in previous NSMB games. This is essentially the SMW of the NSMB franchise, with its large levels, interconnected world map with secrets, Yoshi, etc.

Playing with the Pro controller, because the GamePad just isn't comfortable. I really wish I could use my 8bitdo SNES controller with this game. At least that'll be usable in the Switch version.

@ZeD I saw this on sale recently on the Nintendo store. I recently got a Switch and thought it might be a good fit on that platform but have PS4 too.

Does it 'fit' well on the Switch? Or do you think it's better on the PS4?

@Kidfried It has the aesthetic drawbacks of the other NSMB games. Uninspired visual design. The same terrible music you've heard in other NSMB games (BOP! BOP BOP!).

With that said, it's a surprisingly solid game, and it reminds me more than a little of Super Mario World in terms of the game design.

The world themes get a bit more varied than in recent 2D Mario games as well. There's a jungle one that calls to mind World's Forest of Illusion and SMB3's Giant Land, for example.

@General_Spiller I am playong it all in hand helf and it plays well. Load times are sometimes a wait and it suffers a few frane drops but I cannot compare to the PS4.

Anyway, I was playing in bed until 1 this morning as the story gripped me

General_Spiller

@ZeD thanks for the info. I might just give it a whirl on the Switch then when it's on sale again. Love being able to sit in bed playing games and loving the Switch overall!

@KratosMD You make me curious to try P4: DAN, especially since the P3 and P5 versions of the music game have recently come out. I haven’t been a music game fan really, but your description has me intrigued. So there is a legitimate story to the game? Is the story strong enough to carry the game on its own even if the gameplay isn’t particularly one’s cup-of-tea? How hard is the gameplay for someone who is just a casual fan of rhythm games? For perspective, I lost interest in Patapon once it got toward the end and the difficulty spiked, and my Yakuza karaoke scores are pretty subpar. I’d say I have at least average sense of rhythm for someone who doesn’t play an instrument, but I just don’t delve into that genre of games much.
I wonder how hard physical copies are to find. In the waning hours of Vita’s lifespan, I feel like I need to stockpile some games before they become extinct and this may be one I should add to the library if nothing else to have for the future.

@KratosMD Sounds great! For me it’s a little too early to play DAN, so close to finishing P4G but I will definitely check it out in the near future.

Do you think this game could work for someone who hasn’t played P4 or P4G but likes rhythm games? I have a friend who might love this but he isn’t into JRPG’s (at all) so this might be a way to share my love with him.

@KratosMD Thanks for your detailed answer, much appreciated. I'm actually pretty eager to try it out now so it's added to my Vita's Most Wanted list.

The only negative: it's going to become even harder to get these songs out of my head at work!

@KratosMD Cheers for the heads up. I usually prefer physical for Vita if possible, this would mean I'm looking at 35 EUR (new retail copy). Which I think is acceptable. However... it's hard to ignore this absolute steal.

The sale ends the 19th so I still have a week to decide.

@KratosMD How weird. That is the exact same point I gave up on when I first played it! I did find that section a lot easier in the Remastered version, but it was still tricky. Think it had more to with me playing the hell outta the other games than the improvements from the Remastered version. Although that it help a great deal in some areas like Blighttown.

@KratosMD Yeah that staircase is well confusing, but it is a brilliantly designed level, the way you come back on yourself.

I've not played Demon Souls, but that came before Dark Souls and as far as I know doesn't share the same lore and story beats. So I would probably just go for 2 and 3. If you don't have the second game already, I highly recommend the ps4 remastered version. It is often on sale so you could probs easily find it for a good price.

@KratosMD That’s amazing that you were able to pick back up after 2 years and refamiliaize yourself to Dark Souls after an hour. I’m impressed. If I leave a game dormant it is always so hard to get back into it, both from a skill standpoint, and from a narrative one. And Dark Souls seems like would be one of the harder ones to pick back up, given how hard it is to begin with.
I gave up on Dark Souls back on PS3 after just a couple hours, maybe 2-3. After the first boss I think. I can’t even remember; it’s been much more than 2 yrs. more like 4. But now since I played, loved, and finished Bloodborne, maybe I’d like it the second time around. I wonder if the skill will translate over. I think I’ll start with Dark Souls 3, since supposedly it’s the most similar to BB. But I have too much in my backlog for now.

@KratosMD I’ve actually salivated over the Dark Souls collection. A beautiful steelbook of the definitive edition of all three games for PS4. But at $80, it is actually cheaper to buy the three each separately. And I got DS3 Fire Fades Ed on sale for like $15, so I just nabbed it. The Remastered Ver of DS is a little harder to find at a deal; it seems like Black Friday they it going for about $30 at best.
That’s an interesting take on BB vs DS. I’ve read several people’s opinions and recommendations about how to approach DS after getting into BB, but never really heard it referred to as more laid back or, to use your description, “more relaxing and satisfying.” I think most have stated that it is more tactical, and less forgiving of experimentation and aggressive style of combat as compared to BB because of the mechanic in BB where you can gain back some lost health if you land a blow within a short time of getting hit. Since BB rewards more twitch gameplay, I assumed it was probably “easier” so to speak, but I can appreciate your description of DS being a more relaxed experience because of the defensive options available.

@Th3solution Out of the 4 games I say the 2nd is the easiest, followed by DS, BB and the then DS3. @KratosMD is correct in that a shield makes a big difference to how you can approach the game. You can also use a bow and arrow which have a bigger range than the guns in BB iirc, and have a pure magic build (which would be super crazy to do on your first play through). There is way more customisation options open to you in the souls game than there was in BB.

Having a little PS2 resurgence at the moment, so currently bouncing between:

The Thing

(One of all-time favourite films, remember playing this at release and being blown away - apart from the controls I think it’s aged really well. Love the trust/fear mechanic)

Star Ocean: Till the end of time

Playing this for the first time as I saw it pretty cheap in a shop. Only a couple of hours in but I’m enjoying it so far, not a huge fan of the battle system but il always be a sucker for turn-based.

Prince of Persia: Sands of time

Haven’t played this since release. The sound is weirdly muffled but I kinda like it. Still a great game.
